Kisan Mela kicks off at PAU campus

A two-day Kisan Mela began at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here today.
The mela witnessed a huge gathering of farmers. Dr KD Kokate, Deputy-Director General (Agriculture Extension), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, inaugurated the
mela. The mela is based on the theme "Parali saad ke jatta, na kar sab da mann khatta (Farmers, do not burn paddy straw, do not evoke people's wrath)."

Notices served on taxpayers

The Income Tax Department has shot off notices to around 500 taxpayers, including companies and individuals, for not paying advance tax. The due date for paying the first instalment of the tax is September 15.
Deceased’s relatives stage dharna

Petrol prices up
Petrol prices have been increased by Rs 1.63 a litre from Friday midnight. This is the seventh increase in the prices of petrol in the past four months. Oil companies are citing devaluation of the Rupee and rising international crude oil prices the reason behind the hike. The actual increase in Punjab will be around
Rs 2 since the hike excludes local sales tax and VAT.

Doraha road a shambles

The road under the Doraha bridge is "no one’s baby", if one goes by the versions of various departments, who seemed to be owing the responsibility of repairing and maintaining the road. The Doraha Municipal Council contends that the PWD is responsible for its maintenance, but the PWD refused to adopt it by putting the onus on the the National Highway Authority of India
(NHAI).

72-year-old operated for kidney tumor

Partial Nephrectomy for kidney's inter-polar tumor was performed on a 72-year-old man, by Dr Dig Vijay Singh, Consultant, Urology, Mohandai Oswal Hospital. The patient was referred to the hospital from Washington, USA. This is the first surgery of this kind performed in the hospital, said Dr Singh.

The third Ganpati Mahotsava was organised by the Sidh Data Sewa Society outside Green Land Senior Secondary Public School, Jalandhar Bypass. Hawala racket busted, man held with Rs 24.8 lakh

A person was held with Rs 24.8 lakhs at a naka by the Khanna police. The Senior Superintendent of Police,
Khanna, Sushil Kumar said, “A team of police was deployed at a naka and were checking all the commuters with a motive to curb the growth of illegal activities, which is usually at its peak at night.” The accused was travelling from Delhi to Jalandhar in a bus, when the police grew suspicious of the accused and checked his bag.
