A hoarding put up at a roundabout ahead of PM’s visit to Chandigarh While city Congress leaders are claiming that around 8,000 one-room tenements in Dhanas are being given to slum dwellers tomorrow only because of local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal’s efforts, the posters, banners and advertisements issued by the UT Administration and Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) neither name him nor carry his picture.

PM’s words go unheard; PGI main gate to remain closed

In a thought-defying decision, the UT Administration and the Chandigarh Police have planned to keep the main gate of the PGI closed due to the Prime Minister's visit despite instructions issued by him after his visit to the city four years ago that they should be "more sensitive to the concerns of the common man" while imposing restrictions for reasons of security.

4,000 personnel to keep vigil in city

A recovery van stationed on the road dividing Sectors 11 and 15, through which the Prime Minister’s convoy will pass, in Chandigarh on Friday Around 4,000 personnel of the Chandigarh Police will provide security to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his visit to the city tomorrow. A huge posse of police will be deployed on the route to be taken by the PM’s convoy from the airport to Dhanas, where the he will dedicate one-room tenements to slum dwellers.

Aadhaar enrolment in the city was stalled today as the operators deputed at the eight e-Sampark centres went on strike due to a salary dispute with the company that has recruited them. The residents, who visited the centres to get themselves enrolled for the Aadhaar, found nobody there but a terse notice stating that owing to the strike, Aadhaar enrolment will be held tomorrow.

The Revenue and Police Department could not identify the accused involved in the Forest land scam till now. Though, an FIR was registered against Shiv Dyal, son of Babu Singh, a resident of Peer mucchalla village, and some unidentified accused under Sections 420, 465,467,471 and 120B of the IPC but no one has been identified and arrested in the case.

Book on fungal infections released

Professor YK Chawla, director, PGIMER, released a book titled, ‘Fungal Infections in Asia: The Eastern Frontier of Mycology’, today. The book has been edited by Dr Arunaloke Chakrabarti, professor and Head, Department of Medical Microbiology, PGIMER. It has been published by Elsevier.

IT survey at poultry farms yields 
Rs 11.15 cr

An undisclosed income of Rs 11.15 crore was surrendered by four poultry farms at Barwala in Panchkula district after a survey was conducted by the Income Tax Department here today. It was a 36-hour operation by the officials of the department that started last afternoon and concluded this evening.

Samaritans extend help to rape victim

A day after The Tribune highlighted the plight of the two-and-a-half-year-old rape victim from Ludhiana, whose kin were unable to meet the expenses of her treatment at the PGIMER here, three good Samaritans have come forward to extend financial help to the family of the victim.

Panjab University research scholar to get award in US

The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, has achieved another major international recognition as the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) has selected the work of the research team led by Prof Bhupinder Singh Bhoop and Prof OP Katare for the prestigious Quality by Design (QbD) and Product Performance Award.

A local court has convicted a Mauli Jagran resident of murdering his wife here today. The convict, 44-year-old Ramlakhan, had set his 28-year-old wife on fire in Vikas Nagar of Mauli Jagran on February 6. Besides imprisonment, the court has slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.
