Students protest outside DAC
Bathinda, September 6 Just a day after the Teacher's Day was celebrated with glee in city colleges, as many as 250 students of various colleges of the district assembled under the aegis of the union to meet the Deputy Commissioner of Bathinda and present him a memorandum of demands. However, in the absence of the Deputy Commissioner, the deputation met SDM Damanjit Singh Mann. Union leaders Sarabjeet Singh, David, Sandeep Singh, Gurpreet, Bishandeep Kaur, Mahinderjit Kaur, Simarjeet Kaur, and Poonam led the students from Government Rajindra College, Punjabi University Regional Centre, Government ITI and DAV College. The union brought it to the attention of the SDM that according to a letter issued by the Punjabi University, Patiala, students belonging to the Scheduled Caste category were to pay only the college security fee as their academic fee and other funds were waived off. However, caring two hoots about the university's orders, Government Rajindra College and DAV College made the SC students pay fees. The union requested the district administration to step in and help the SC students get a refund of the fees and also ensure that the university's orders were followed. Further, the union members pointed out that the Guru Kashi University in Talwandi Sabo was yet to be recognised as a university by the UGC while it had been admitting students in various streams for the past two years. The union demanded that the administration should look into the matter as the students who had appeared for semester examinations were yet to receive detailed marksheets. To make sure that the students don’t leave the university, the university had withheld their certificates. The deputation pointed out that the city students travelling to and from the nearby areas like Budhlada, Bhucho Mandi, Bhucho Kenchiya etc in the district had been facing problems due to limited number of government buses running on these routes. They said at times, buses do not stop for students and they were forced to either pay to travel in private buses or wait for the next bus. They requested the district administration to either ask the PRTC to run more buses to cater to the students’ community or order staff of private buses to stop making the students pay for tickets and misbehaving with them. They also demanded that it be made compulsory for PRTC buses to stop outside all the colleges falling on their routes and also stop at all the bus stands. Responding to the demands of the students, the SDM assured them that the administration would arrive at a solution as far as their travel-related problems were concerned and would intimate them about it. He added that a meeting of the principals of the city colleges would be convened and the matter of fee waiver of SC students will be discussed and settled. He expressed ignorance about the university status of the Guru Kashi University and said he would hold a meeting with the vice-chancellor of the university, SK Ahluwalia. |
