Jewellers cough up crores in I-T raids
Jammu, September 5 The I-T department teams comprising 150 to 200 officials from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab conducted raids on the premises of seven top jewellers. The raids began at 7 am on Wednesday and ended at 2 pm on Thursday. I-T teams raided Silver Lines, Vijay, Kanaya, Roshan, Talla, Krishna and Raman Jewellers. Sources said Rs 23 crore had been surrendered by three top jewellers out of which Rs 10 crore has been surrendered by Roshan Jewellers, Rs 8 crore by Krishna Jewellers and Rs 5 crore by Silver Lines Jewellers. “The I-T department also seized seven bank lockers, Rs 1.25 crore and jewellery worth Rs 32 lakh,” sources added. This was the biggest raid on jewellers in the state in which simultaneous raids were conducted by teams from outside the state. No one from the local I-T department was part of the raids. City jewellers had called for two-day shutdown in protest against the raids. “We condemn the raids on jewellery shops in Jammu. If the I-T department feels there is some jewellers are not paying taxes as per their sale and profit, they should have given a prior notice by the I-T department. As if there was any laxity by jewellers party, then the raids should have been conducted,” said Ajay Vaid, general secretary of Swankar Jewellers Association (SJA). Vaid said an 11-member core group of the SJA will meet the Chief Minister and the Finance Minister over the issue. “Installing hoardings and giving advertisements regarding discount offers on jewellery have not gone down well with the I-T department and thus a Reece was conducted for past some time. On Wednesday the raids were conducted and seven top jewellers were taken to task,” sources add. Meanwhile, jewellers’ associations have decided to open their shops on Friday after a gap of two days. |

Teaching job aspirants a harried lot
Batote, September 5 All such SC and ST candidates from the Jammu province who had applied for the posts in various districts of the Kashmir province against the reserved quota following an advertisement notice no 03 of 2012 and 01 to 06 of 2013 were asked to collect their admit cards from the Employment and Counselling Centres (ECCs) of the districts concerned from where they had applied for. “I had applied for Baramulla last year. I thought that the district has thin SC population and being an SC I may stand a chance there. But I learnt from a notice in a newspaper on September 2, that all candidates having their names beginning with an ‘A’ or a ‘B’were to collect their cards from the ECCs of the districts for which they had applied. It worried me as September 3 was the date fixed for such candidates and it looked impossible for me to reach there,” said Bittu Ram an SC of Sanasar, Ramban. “But I immediately left for Banihal, where I stayed for a night and left for Baramulla by a train the next morning. But I could not get the card that day. On my return, I had to stay in a hotel at Ramban only to return to my home yesterday morning,” he added. He was surprised to read another notice in the same daily today, wherein it was informed that such candidates could now ‘download their cards’ from the website of the Board after 2 pm yesterday. But when Harmeet Singh of Gagla, Doda, tried to download the same for himself at 2.45 pm, the server of the said official site was down and could not be accessed till the filing of this report. “Now, care should be taken while setting the exam centres for the September 14 test to avoid anymore inconvenience and unfairness,” said Amin, father of a woman candidate from Batote. Despite repeated efforts, none of the concerned officers of JKSSB could be contacted. |
