Majithia dares Cong to seek fiscal emergency

Gurdaspur, August 30
State Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia has blamed the country’s federal structure responsible for the state's fiscal mess. Majithia said ever since Dr Manmohan Singh had taken over as Prime Minister, the country was facing a financial problems. This in turn had had a cascading effect on the economies of others states, including Punjab.

“Despite the Centre not helping Punjab with financial packages, the state is still well-off. The industrial climate remains conducive for industrialists. Electricity producing companies like Vedanta and GVK would be starting operations in the state by the year-end. By next year we expect the state to be power surplus.”

Majithia claimed that at the time of Independence in 1947, the rate of the rupee and dollar was the same. “The rupee tumble has made top economists, including retiring RBI Governor D Subbarao, to question the fiscal policies of the Centre,” he said. “Subbarao, a UPA appointee, has blamed the Union Government for the currency’s downslide and, hence, the UPA has no moral authority to govern the country. I appeal to the President to declare a fiscal emergency in the country,” he said, observing that Subbarao’s outburst showed how the Central Government was trying to impinge on RBI autonomy.

He said the Tata Group's former head Ratan Tata had also indicted the Union government for failing to control the rupee downslide. He dared PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari to demand financial emergency in the country. — TNS
