4 kg more heroin seized from arrested smugglers
Amritsar, August 27
The seizure was made following the interrogation of the two smugglers, identified as Ranjit Singh, alias Rana, and Amarjit Singh, both residents of border village Daoke. They were arrested with 5 kg of heroin on August 23. The consignment was reportedly smuggled from the Pakistani side in the area of the border outpost of Daoke village. Paramraj Umranangal, DIG (Border Range), said the police also recovered 5 kg of white powder, which was suspected to be a synthetic drug. He said the consignment was seized from the residence and the agriculture land belonging to the two accused. He said the powder would be sent to Chandigarh for chemical examination to ascertain the nature of the suspected drug. The consignment reportedly belonged to two notorious Indo-Pak smugglers Gurjant Singh Bholu and Rashpal Singh, who were arrested by the State Special Operation Cell, a counter intelligence wing of the Punjab Police, near Harike in 2012. However, the two accused managed to give the police party a slip when they were being taken to Ferozepur for hearing in a similar case in February this year. Gurjant and Rashpal are the same smugglers who had shot at another two notorious smugglers Gurbhej Singh and his accomplice Satbir Singh near Rayya. They were rushed to a private hospital with gunshot injuries. The police has included the names of Gurjant Singh and Rashpal Singh in this case also. Confirming this, the DIG, under whose supervision the case is being investigated, said Rana and Amarjit were produced in the court today and they were sent to police custody for two days for further investigation. He said Amarjit was handicapped and both the accused did not have any previous criminal record. The police was investigating about the source of the contraband and to whom it was to be delivered. He said the police was also probing the properties, which the accused had procured by illegal means. |
