Lack of coordination between depts causes harassment to public
Our Correspondent

Nawanshahr, August 5
The small stretch of the main roads falling under Jalandhar- Nawanshahr- Chandigarh route and Garhshanker - Nawanshahr- Rahon - Khanna route in the town were strengthened a couple of months ago but potholes started appearing there due to leakage of underground water supply and sewerage pipes. The cause behind the deplorable condition is attributed to lack of coordination between different departments - PWD, Municipal Council and Punjab Sewerage and Water Supply Board at the time of strengthening of the road.

The Municipal Council has dug the newly constructed road at Chandigarh Chowk and two other places here for repairing the underground pipes, that too in a haphazard manner and without any coordination with the PWD department. The haphazard digging has not only damaged the newly constructed road but also posing a danger to the commuters.

It is worthwhile to mention here that about two years ago, the Punjab Sewerage and Water Supply Board dug the stretch of road from Chandigarh Chowk and Fatti Basta Chowk for laying the main sewerage pipeline in the town. After completion of the work, the road was lying in the deplorable condition causing much inconvenience to the residents especially the shopkeepers, employees of the different departments situated here. Finally, after much hue and cry, the road was strengthened recently. The PWD officials claim that they have constantly been raising the issue of solving the problem of leakage of underground water supply and sewerage pipes but to no avail. The issue of recent digging by the Municipal Council has also been brought into the notice of the Deputy Commissioner. But, despite directions from the DC, the Municipal Council is yet to make up for the haphazard digging at the main roads here.
