Valley reels under hot weather
Srinagar, July 29 An official of the Meteorological Department said Srinagar and Kupwara recorded the maximum temperature at 35.4 and 35.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Till now, Srinagar had recorded the hottest day of this summer season yesterday at 34.6 degrees Celsius. The MeT official said temperatures at most of the places in the Valley were five to six degrees above normal. Director, MeT office, Sonam Lotus said July month usually remained hot with temperatures usually hovering around 32-33 degrees Celsius mark. While light showers have been forecast at isolated places of the Valley during the next 24 hours, Lotus said respite from the heat wave was likely from the first week of August. He said rain was predicted from August 1. Other places in the Valley too recorded above normal day temperature. Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded the maximum temperature at 33.3 degrees Celsius, while tourist resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir saw a high of 30.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Srinagar, Qazigund, Pahalgam and Kupwara was recorded at 23.8, 21.3, 19.0 and 21.9 degrees Celsius, respectively. Docs warn people against dehydration in Ramadan
Srinagar, July 29 With more than half of the Ramadan month is over, doctors said cases of dehydration were increasing due to hot weather conditions. The Valley witnessed the hottest day of the season on Sunday at 34.6 degrees Celsius. Doctors said people should at least drink 3-4 litres of water to avoid dehydration during the evening and pre-dawn meals (iftaari and suhhor). “It is necessary to maintain an optimum PH balance in the body. Drinking optimum amount of water is highly recommended,” said Dr Shuaib Alam, a general practitioner. He said Kashmiris should do away with the routine intake of high carbohydrate and fat-rich foods. Rather, attention should be paid on consuming protein-rich light diets, he said. “It is usually expected from people to overeat during the permissible hours of fasting. But, that usually leads to putting on weight. Avoid excessively fried foods .Intake of caffeinated drinks and soft drinks should be kept to minimum,” he said. One of the common myths which circulate among people is that eating loads of pre-dawn meal will alleviate hunger pangs and thirst, but doctors say eating excessive food at that time may lead to indigestion and dyspepsia. "You will feel discomfort, heartburn or nausea during fasting hours the following day if you eat in excessive amount at ‘suhoor", said Dr Humaira, a physician at SMHS Hospital. The doctors said eating a lot of iron-rich foods like green leafy vegetables as lettuce, spinach, lentils and salads at the time of breaking the fast was ideal. “Break the fast with dates and a glass of water for a heavy rush of energy. Traditional food like rice, chicken soup, meat balls or vegetables is fine later,” said Dr Humaira. Abdul Raouf (15) said he planned to stay up late at night during Ramadan. Sana Beigh, a housewife and mother of three, said: "My entire lifestyle changes during Ramadan. I divide my time between cooking for my family, praying and reading Quran." |

Protests against ‘erring’ doctor spread, health services affected
Kupwara, July 29 Sources said the doctor had been attached to the office of the Chief Medical Officer, Kupwara, and an inquiry had been ordered into the allegations levelled against him. The protesters demanded termination of the doctor’s services. They threatened to suspend work in government-run hospitals across the Kupwara district and lodge protests, if the doctor was not terminated from his services. “He calls female paramedical and nursing staff worms and often abuses them. He has no respect for others. If he is posted at some other health centre, he will continue using abusive language. We will not call off protests unless he is terminated,” said Abdul Ahad Qureshi, chairman of the Health Employees Coordination Committee. “The doctor provoked some of his supporters against the Block Medical Officer, Zachaldara, demanding that the doctor should not be transferred from the health centre,” he added. The protesters including the nursing and paramedical staff boycotted work in the sub-district hospital, Kupwara, and many other health centres in support of their demand. Patient care has been badly hit due to the strike by the medical staff. “We will continue protests unless action is taken against the erring doctor. He should be terminated from his services so that no doctor dares to resort to unbecoming conduct with his subordinates or juniors,” said Shafiqa Akther, a nurse. On Friday, nursing and paramedical staff of various PHCs suspended their work demanding action against Dr Teli, who they alleged often misbehaved with them. |

Casual labourers’ bid to gherao civil secretariat foiled
Srinagar, July 29 Talking to mediapersons, JKCLU president Mohammad Shafi Bhat said the government had failed to release their wages despite repeated protests in the past. He said the authorities concerned had promised that their wages would be released in the first 10 days of this month but they were still waiting for the same. Bhat threatened to hold protests on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr along with their families if the government failed to release their wages before Shab-e-Qadr. He regretted that they were being forced to hit the road in protest even ahead of the festive occasion. After protesting at the Press Enclave, the JKCLU members attempted to take out a procession towards the Civil Secretariat. However, the police foiled their bid by resorting to cane charge and by spraying coloured water from water cannon near Jehangir Chowk. Several protesters were also taken into preventive custody while a few others sustained injuries during the police action. |

Sports will soon be part of school curriculum: Minister
Srinagar, July 29 Chairing the 129th meeting of the standing committee of the J&K Sports Council here today, the minister said, “Strengthening of sports infrastructure in the state is my priority and I want that stadiums particularly indoor stadiums are constructed in every block of the state as youth here have limited recreational facilities available and that too for a limited season.” He said, “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has sanctioned a package of more than Rs 700 crore for the state to strengthen its sports infrastructure." He said Astroturf was being laid at TRC grounds, Srinagar, and at Baramulla. He said MA Stadium, Jammu, was also being upgraded to hold national level events. Gool inquiry an attempt to repeat Shopian farce: PDP
Srinagar, July 29 The PDP president said the Chief Minister’s comments on Gool killings were not just irresponsible, but a deliberate attempt to shield the guilty. “It reminded one of the sequence of events in the Shopian tragedy where the death of two unfortunate women was ultimately closed as a case of drowning and the prosecution launched against lawyers, doctors and those who sought justice against the deceased,” she said. “One fears a similar course of events is being followed in the Gool killings which might ultimately end up in action against the victims.” She said people who protested against the killings and demanded justice were already being harassed and persecuted. “In the entire Chenab valley, the police is raiding the houses of people who participated in the protests, filing cases against them and arresting them. One hopes that the killings were not attributed ultimately to wild animals and people like the local Imams prosecuted for the atrocities committed by the men in uniform,” she said. Mehbooba said there were tell tale signs of anarchy in the entire state. |

Residents condemn frequent power cuts during holy month
Anantnag, July 29 Sources said residents of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian districts, particularly the rural areas, had been left high and dry in this scorching heat. They said the power cuts had been a part and parcel of the winter season in Kashmir and they got used to it, however this year, frequent power cuts had become a norm in the summer months as well. “The heat is unbearable and at this time, a majority of the people in Kashmir are fasting; this is the height of insensitivity from the authorities,” said Shabir Ahmad, a teacher from the DH Pora area of Kulgam district. Ahmad said the power cuts were most prevalent during the evening and wee hours. “These are the times that are most important during Ramadan,” he said. Woes of the people hailing from the towns are more or less the same, they too rue the frequent power cuts. “We live in metered area and were promised 24-hour electricity supply when the metres were installed. Now that a miserable schedule has been issued for the power supply, at least that should be followed,” said a resident of Bijbehara town in Anantnag district. People living in the rural areas of Pulwama and Shopian districts have similar tales to tell. “After long woeful power cuts during winters, we looked forward to summer for better power supply and it turns out to be even worse,” said Rauf Ahmad, a resident of Shopian district. Power officials, however, maintained that the power supply had been good throughout the south Kashmir region. “Barring some rural areas, we have been supplying power to good effect,” said a senior official at the PDD. |
