Advani predicts early poll, record-breaking results
New Delhi, July 27 Making his first major political appearance after the controversial Goa conclave, which he skipped thus highlighting sharp differences within the party on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s elevation issue, BJP patriarch LK Advani today said political atmosphere in the country was ideal for the party to get “record-breaking results”. Predicting early elections, the senior leader said the Congress-led UPA had failed to tackle corruption and price rise thus creating a favourable condition for the saffron fold. Speaking at the BJP Scheduled Caste Front National Executive here, Advani praised the RSS for its non-casteist outlook. “The RSS view of not discriminating against people on the basis of caste has played an immense role in the political growth of our party,” Advani said, adding that this attitude of non-discrimination had brought Dalits closer to the BJP. “Looking at the confidence of the SC morcha workers here, I am sure that we will achieve record breaking results in the elections,” he added. Referring to former BSP chief Kanshi Ram, he also recalled one of their interactions several years back when he had told the latter that, “what cannot be achieved socially (by Dalits) can be achieved politically”. Advani had cited the example of RSS shakhas in Punjab to Kanshi Ram, saying that all sections of society, except Sikhs, used to attend them. The Sikhs too started attending RSS meetings after the BJP and the SAD forged an alliance, he said. Incidentally, Advani ties with the RSS were believed to have come under stress after Modi’s elevation. Since then, there have been many meetings between him and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat both here as well as in Nagpur to sort out issues. Meanwhile, referring to recent opinion polls, he said usually such polls were “prejudiced” against the BJP but this time they were showing positive results, indicating that the party would win the elections. Predicting early polls, Advani said the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls would be over by April 2014.

Protests erupt as UPPSC cancels examination results
Lucknow, July 27 Following the decision of cancellation of the Combined State Upper Subordinate Service (Mains) examination and the interview which had been stayed by the Allahabad High Court by 10 days, a large number of angry pro-reservation students took to the streets. Targeting the ruling party, the protesters attacked the residence of the Samajwadi party district president Pandhari Yadav. They set ablaze furniture and vehicles as well as damaged the windowpanes of his residence. Calling the withdrawal of the UPPSC order “betrayal by the Akhilesh Yadav government”, the pro-reservation students indulged in arson and disappeared as soon as the police arrived. No one was arrested. Security has been tightened at his residence. After a closed-door meeting of the commission last night, it was decided to quash the results of the examination declared on July 4. As per the new rules, caste-based quota was being brought into effect at the preliminary stage itself. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Lucknow, BSP supremo Mayawati lashed out at the UPPSC’s new policy which was aimed to favour one particular caste. She alleged that the order was a way to benefit one particular caste over and above the constitutional provision of 27 per cent.

Digvijay joins criticism on poverty criteria
Poverty threshold
New Delhi, July 27 Singh felt that malnourishment in members of family should be the criteria and that the existing method was too abstract and can’t be same for all areas. “I have always failed to understand the Planning Commission criteria for fixing poverty line. It is too abstract can’t be same for all areas,” the Congress general secretary said on the microblogging site twitter. In another tweet, Singh made a strong pitch for linking poverty with malnutrition and anaemia. “First indicator of poverty is malnourishment and anaemia in the family which is easily measurable. Can't we have that as a criteria?”, he tweeted. His remarks came a day after Sibal challenged the method used by the Planning Commission to calculate poverty. —

Railway bribery scam: Jain seeks supplementary chargesheet
Chandigarh, July 27 While addressing a press conference here, Jain said that in the telephone conversations between accused in the railway bribery scam, which are part of the CBI’s chargesheet, names of Rahul Gandhi and Ahmed Patel had come up on a number of occasions. “It is not only Rahul Gandhi or Ahmed Patel, but CBI should question all those persons whose names have come up during these conversations,” he stated. Jain also maintained that these conversations were enough for the CBI to include former railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s name in the list of accused, but it preferred to include his name in the witnesses’ list. Jain said the CBI should re-investigate the matter and file a supplementary chargesheet in this case. Jain also raised questions as to why the CBI did not put Bansal’s nephew Vijay Singla’s phone under surveillance.
