BJP to protest power tariff hike
The party will hold candlelight rallies across the city
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 27
The Delhi BJP announced that it would launch a city-wide agitation tomorrow against the increase in power tariff. The party would also hold a rally on the issue at Ramlila Grounds on August 11.

Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said that the party will hold candlelight marches across the city, including the one in front of the Chief Minister's residence, followed by agitations at the district and mandal levels.

"The common people of Delhi are bearing the brunt of a complete sellout of their interests by the Congress government of Delhi and the DERC to the private power distribution companies (discoms). Instead of protecting the interests of common people, the government is working hand in glove with the private discoms," said Goel.

The five per cent hike has resulted in an increase of 72 per cent in power tariff over the last two years, he said.

Goel said that there is lack of transparency making the common man suffer.

"The Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) of the discoms are not made public. It is on the basis of these PPAs that the discoms are claiming losses and the DERC and the Delhi Government are raising tariff," he said.

On the subsidy being given by the government, Goel said, "Public money is used for subsidizing and in the garb of subsidy, this amount is going into the pockets of the discoms robbing the public exchequer of thousands of crores of rupees over the last few years."

Heavy rain lashed the national Capital today, bringing respite from hot and humid conditions, but it also brought with it the perennial problem of waterlogging in several areas of the city.

The day began on a warm and sunny note but in the afternoon, most parts of the city were drenched in heavy rain, bringing respite from sultry weather conditions.

Till evening, the city recorded a total rainfall of 14.8 mm, said officials of the Indian Meteorological Department. The maximum temperature was registered at 35.5° C which was one degree above normal.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.2° C, one notch below normal. The humidity level hovered between 62 and 92 per cent.

Today being a Saturday and most of the offices were closed, there was no major problem of traffic snarls.

However, the city witnessed waterlogging in many low-lying areas but there were no reports of traffic jams as they happened last Saturday.

"It was pleasant driving on the roads today as there was no traffic jam unlike last week on Saturday when there was a downpour. It was may be due to less rain today," said Megha Sharma, a college student.

The Meteorological department has predicted a partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain later in the day tomorrow.
