FYUP admission DU panel to look into complaints
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 9
While the Delhi University administration has announced that it would constitute a high-powered inquiry committee headed by a retired judge to look into the problems faced by the aspirants who applied for admission to the four year undergraduate programme (FYUP), a large number of students, parents under the banner of Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) today demonstrated outside the building housing the Human Resource and Development ministry on the issue.

The administration took a strong view after the office of DU's Dean of Students Welfare (DSW) received numerous complaints from the students of all categories, seeking admission to the undergraduate programme in different colleges of the university, said DSW Prof J.M Khurana.

"The colleges are defying various notifications issued by the university from time to time related to gap years, denying admission even if the candidates meet the cut-off, delaying the admission process, unnecessarily making the candidates visit the office of the Dean of Students Welfare for variety of reasons which could be resolved at college level, not providing the basic facilities on the college premises, etc," he said.

This, he said, is not only worrying the aspirants and their parents but also putting a question on the working of the university.

He said, "The university has taken a very serious note of all these violations and decided to constitute a high-powered inquiry committee headed by a retired judge to look into such violations by the colleges."

SC/ST Teachers Association president Dhani Ram said many aspirants to the undergraduate programme belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) are facing problems in submitting admission forms to the various colleges.

New Delhi, July 9
To prevent a security hazard inside the Metro coaches, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to connect the CCTV cameras inside the coaches to the control rooms, for providing a real-time viewing.

The MHA has also directed the DMRC to install the cameras inside those coaches that presently don't have them.

At present, the CCTV cameras of the coaches are not connected to the control rooms of the DMRC and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The CISF is responsible for the security of the stations and the coaches.

In June, these security issues were discussed in a meeting convened by the Joint Secretary (UT) in the MHA.

The meeting was attended by the CISF, DMRC, Delhi Police, Noida Police, Gurgaon Police and Ghaziabad Police.

A CISF officer, explaining the present security scenario, said, "Only the DMRC train operator can view the footage of the CCTV cameras. But we are blind to any suspicious activities that could take place inside the coaches. The cameras
are yet to be connected to our control rooms or of the DMRC."

In cases of emergency, the driver can pan the cameras to look at what is happening inside the coaches. By using an audio communication device, he can inform the DMRC operational control room, which manages the coaches. However, the communication devices are not connected to the CISF control rooms.

AIIMS surgeons separate conjoined baby girls
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 9
Shaily and Shilpa, who were joined at birth and surgically separated at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) this May when they were nearly six months old, are now fit to be discharged, said AIIMS doctors here while briefing the media today.

To their poor parents, daily wage labourers Lal Bhai and Shashikala in Aber village of Satna, Madhya Pradesh, the surgery would have been a dream, as they said if the MP from Satna, Ganesh Singh had not intervened and brought them to AIIMS.

"The surgery was a success and there are no deficits and by tomorrow the babies would be discharged," confirmed Minu Bajpai, professor of pediatric surgery at AIIMS. The babies can now lead a normal life, he said.

A month after their birth, the twins born with a rare condition 'omphalopagus', were brought to AIIMS on December 12 last year to the casualty with low birth weight and were fused at abdomen.

Thereafter, it took nearly five months to complete the checkups on the girls and plan the surgery, which took nearly eight hours on May 29.

"They had infection and portions of their body were fixed. The chest and liver were joined, but they had separate hearts. We performed the procedure on May 23 in which the liver was separated, the chest and bone muscles were also separated and a reconstructive surgery was done," said Dr Bajpai.

Post-surgery, they were kept in the ICU and parents were kept away. It was only when the fear of infection was ruled out, they were shifted to the ward and the parents were allowed to meet them, he added.

"We cried when they were born and couldn't find out the reason. When we went for delivery to the government hospital, we were told to go to a private hospital. Now we have no word to thank and would try to do everything to educate them," said the couple. The AIIMS doctors have advised them to bring the baby girls for checkups for some years.

Dr Bajpai said, "In the last 30 years, we have come across eight to 10 such cases."
