Power to cost more during peak hrs

Consumption of electricity during peak hours will now cost more. The UT Electricity Department has decided to fix power tariff under three slabs, full peak, normal peak and off-peak hours.

The court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today convicted two officials of the UT Estate Office on the charges of cheating and corruption. The case dates back to 2004.

Transfer of leasehold property put on hold

The Chandigarh Administration has put on hold the transfer of residential property from leasehold to freehold. The orders concern those having residential properties allotted by the UT Estate Office and the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB).

An earthquake of moderate intensity rocked the city today. The quake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred around 7.20 pm with its epicentre at Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal border. No loss of life or property was reported. — TNS

24 malaria cases reported in city
Chandigarh, July 9
The number of malaria cases reported in the city so far has reached 24. Even as the number of cases have been growing minimally as compared to last year’s, the UT Health Department has been raising concern over a majority of cases from the high-risk areas (mostly periphery villages) that do not reach the hospital, but still the virus has been spreading fast across the city.

Missing boy’s body fished out
Chandigarh, July 9
A day after a 14-year-old boy was feared drowned as he went to swim along with his friends at a rivulet near Saketri, his body was fished out in the wee hours today. Shivam, a Class IX student of MDAV School, (Lahore), Sector 8, along with a group of six friends had gone to take a bath in the rivulet around 3pm yesterday.

Tata Housing refuses to annul pact with society
Chandigarh, July 9
Tata Housing has refused to annul its agreement with a society of Punjab MLAs, which handed over its land to the housing major for Tata Camelot apartment project that has hit a major roadblock following environmental objections.

City to get 10 life support ambulances
Chandigarh, July 9
The city will get 10 basic life support and advanced life support ambulances, based on the 108 Ambulance model of Punjab. The decision comes a year after the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Bid to supply contraband foiled
Mohali, July 9
An alert head constable with the Mohali police foiled a visitor’s attempt to supply contraband to an undertrial, who was brought from Ropar Jail for hearing in the local court today.

Woman comes in contact with loose electricity wire

An employee of the Sector 6 General Hospital came in contact with a loose electricity wire while cleaning the X-ray laboratory. The condition of the victim, Sudesh, is stated to be critical.

2-yr-old girl shows signs of recovery
Chandigarh, July 9
The two-year-old girl, Srinika, who had suffered severe brain injuries and multiple limb fractures after suffering a fall on May 28, has survived and is recovering. The i10 car, in which the girl and her parents were travelling, was hit by a Ford Endeavour on the Chandigarh-Zirakpur flyover.

Students can submit forms today

With students making a demand to extend the last date of submission of application forms for admission, which ended on July 6, the university has decided to allow the students who were left to submit their forms on July 10.

Rs 2 lakh snatched at knifepoint
Ambala, July 9
Three miscreants snatched Rs 2 lakh from an employee of a private transport company this afternoon. The police said Sanjay and Nadeem withdrew Rs 4 lakh from HDFC Bank. After withdrawing the cash, Sanjay kept Rs 2 lakh in the front pocket of his shirt, while Nadeem kept the remaining amount in the pocket of his trousers.

The CBI Court of Vimal Kumar today accepted the closure report filed by the investigating agency against two senior officers of the Defence Estate (Western Command) and a civilian. The case was registered in 2011 and the CBI had filed a closure today.

4 of family attacked, two arrested

The Mohali police has arrested two persons, including a relative of an Akali leader of the Banur area, for allegedly attacking members of a family with sharp-edged weapons and iron rods at Saneta village this morning.

Rs 4.5 lakh looted at gunpoint
Panchkula, July 9
Four unidentified persons looted Rs 4.5 lakh at gunpoint from a youth at Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula, this evening. The incident took place when Rajiv Kumar, a distributor of a cellular company, was keeping a bag in his Swift Dzire car near National Sin Hospital.

NRI woman duped of gold jewellery, cash
Chandigarh, July 9
An NRI woman was conned of her gold jewelleryworth Rs 80,000 by a couple in Sector 27 today. The couple fled after collecting the gold ornaments, including gold bangles, chain, one pair of earrings and Rs 5,000 cash in a white handkerchief near the house of 52-year-old Nirmal Gupta in Sector 27.

Chandigarh, July 9
Thieves fled away after stealing a laptop and a bag containing cash from a parked car in Industrial Area today. Parveen Kumar, a resident of Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra, who reported that someone has stolen one laptop and cash Rs 1,50,000 after breaking the window pane of his car number CH-03U-2565 parked near Plot No. 88, Ph-1, Industrial area.

Tantrik arrested on molestation charge
Chandigarh, July 9
The UT police today arrested a 32-year-old tantrik (godman) for cheating and molesting a girl on the pretext of solving her problems in his office at Sector 46. The girl was staying as a paying guest in the city and came in contact with the tantrik after she saw his advertisement on a news channel.

Two arrested on murder charge
Mohali, July 9
The police has booked two residents of Baryiali village on the charge of murder. The accused,Gurpreet Singh and Surmukh Singh, murdered their friend,Ranjit Singh, as he refused to give them Rs 5,000 last night. Both the accused have been arrested.

Theft at house in Panchkula

Thieves struck at a house in Sector 15 and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh last night. The owner of the house, Shyam Lal Mangla, was away to Kaithal. On return, he found the house ransacked.

The Chandigarh Football Academy while representing Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, registered a 5-0 victory over DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Sector 8, during the Pre-Subroto Cup Football Tournament for Boys (U-17) being held at the Sector 17 football stadium.

3 city schools to vie for top slot
Chandigarh, July 9
Three city schools will vie for the top slot during the 11th edition of the  UT Administrator All-India Football Cup for Boys (U-17). The UT sports secretary stated that the winners of the Inter-School Football Tournament for Boys (U-17) would be slugging it out in the all-India tournament.

Cricket camp gets under way at PCA
Mohali, July 9
A month-long cricket coaching camp for boys (U-19) started at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). Twenty players attending the camp were selected by the Junior National Selection Committee under the chairmanship of Chanderkant Pandit. Players from states, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, will attend the camp.

Top seed Sagar Bains defeated Harshdeep Mehla in the first round of the ongoing AITA Paragon Tennis Championship for Boys and Girls being held at Paragon School. In an 80-minute rally, Sagar faced some good hard hitting ground shots by his rival Mehla. But his consistency to hold the serve helped Sagar to name the match at 8-7(7-3).

Soccer talent meet
Chandigarh, July 9
The 2013 leg of Airtel Rising Stars Soccer Talent Tournament for Boys (U-16) will start from next month. The organising committee will conduct the three-month programme in 16 cities, including Chandigarh, Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Calicut, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Guwahati.
