All set for Amritsar foundation day celebrations
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, July 4
Formed by the US-based EcoSikh, EcoAmritsar today unveiled its plan to celebrate the foundation day of Amritsar on July 6 with the focus on green initiatives like water harvesting, reducing waste, conserving energy and promoting organic farming to achieve its mission of a "cleaner and greener city" by 2017.

Addressing mediapersons here today, chairman of the EcoAmritsar Gunbir Singh said, "At present we are just sowing seeds with a hope to make a difference in the city in the coming years." He said they would make it a point to go for impact assessment every year to see what their shortcomings were before marching forward by initiating corrective measures. He said they had got overwhelming support from religious institutions, schools, colleges and NGOs for their campaign.

Dwelling on their initiatives, he said they would make efforts to cut down waste, as the city produced a whopping 700 tonnes of waste every day. He said they would be inaugurating three zero disposal parks (ZDPs), which would utilise the waste generated from them (fallen leaves, etc) in vermi-compost pits to produce manure that would be utilised again in these parks.

He said these demonstration projects would showcase to the entire neighbourhood how even households could regenerate kitchen waste into economically viable and chemical-free vegetables for the family. "It will be a win-win situation for them as they will not only save money on purchasing vegetables, but also help conserve the environment," he added. According to him, they will also help those having space crunch to grow veggies on their terrace. Similarly, he said they would also sensitise the residents putting up "chhabeels" and "langars" along roadsides to use dustbins to collect disposable plates and glasses instead of littering city roads.

Gunbir said they had no grandeur plans, but were only focusing on small initiatives that would help the city go cleaner and greener in the longer run. They had also roped in industries, which had pledged to curb effluent discharge. Besides, they were also urging the corporate houses to go for energy audit for conserving the same.

He said various organisations had also adopted different areas for green drive. For instance, Baba Sewa Singh from Khadur Sahib would plant saplings on the Jandiala-Amritsar road.

Gunbir said they were being extremely careful that only those projects were undertaken which were sustainable. "Our aim is to make a difference within the 2017 time frame when Amritsar celebrates its 440th foundation day. We are appealing to all communities and religious bodies for endorsement and adoption as well. This is a people's project and needs popular support for to succeed and become effective. No single person or organisation can accomplish what we have set out to achieve, but the collective will and endeavour by residents can bring about a change in the city. Our maxim is 'Amritsar - My City, My Pride, My Responsibility!' Since the city now receives over 1.2 million pilgrims and tourists in a year, challenges to the carrying capacity of the city are many and so is the need for all of us to be responsible hosts," he added.

Gunbir expressed his gratitude towards Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, and Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal for supporting their initiative wholeheartedly.

The celebration schedule

  • July 5: The Akal Takht jathedar will plant five saplings to kick off the green drive; "Green" nagar kirtan will be taken out, while ensuring no waste litters the roads; Khalsa College will adopt organic farming; SGPC to will hold kirtan darbar.
  • July 6: Residents will take out a march from the Golden Temple to Ram Bagh from 7 am to 8.30 am, followed by a public meeting at the garden; participants will be given 1,100 saplings as "Buta Parsad"; zero disposal parks will be inaugurated; a painting exhibition will take off at Art Gallery, railway station and airport.

Amritsar, July 4
At most of the public offices in the city, visitors have to park their vehicles outside on roads as the parking spaces on the office premises are too small to accommodate the present day rush of vehicles.

The district courts complex and Deputy Commissioner office complex, where most of the public offices as treasury, Suwidha Centre and patwarkhana are located, witness a large number of vehicles parked outside on roads.

The vehicles parked on the roads also block the normal flow of traffic. Sometimes in a hurry to get inside these public offices, visitors park their vehicles in a haphazard manner.

The district courts complex does not even have sufficient space for parking the vehicles of advocates, their clerks and other staff members. The parking spaces inside the courts complex was not enough to accommodate vehicles of the people working here, said an advocate, adding that underground multi-storey parking could solve the problem.

The road leading from Court Chowk to Hartej Hospital, though is under repair these days, but a large number of vehicles are found parked on it. As illegal parking lots have come up, a few people are even charging money from the owners for the vehicles parked on the road.

The vehicle owners are not given any slip, but are asked to pay Rs 10 to 20, said Jagtar Singh, a visitor. He said considering the rush of visitors to the government offices, more parking area should be constructed, where vehicles could be parked safely for a nominal fee.
