Bus passengers on Fazilka-F’pur route at receiving end
Fazilka, June 4 The demand for revocation of the monopoly of Punjab Roadways on the Fazilka-Ferozepur route has again gained momentum as the commuters have been suffering continuously. The state transport authorities had granted permits to some private traders on the route over two decades back but the strong lobby of Punjab Roadways employees did not allow them to ply their buses on this monopoly route. As per official sources, the department has suspended the plying of at least 20 long route buses including Fazilka to Chintpurni (Himachal Pardesh), Yamunanagar (Haryana), Sangria, Hanumangarh and Srigangangar (Rajasthan) Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Nangal and Amritsar, leaving the passengers high and dry. The problem has aggravated as no private buses are allowed to run on this monopoly route. The passengers have to opt for alternative means as some unauthorised vehicles have been running on the route with impunity. “It is in the larger interests of the people of the area to end the monopoly of Punjab Roadways on this route and allow the plying of private buses to provide better and competitive service to the commuters,” said Rajinder Kumar who travels daily between Fazilka and Ferozepur. Makhan Singh, General Manager, Punjab Roadways, when contacted, said, "The buses are being run frequently and there is no problem of any kind. However, the monopoly route can not be revoked at all.” |
