Fund-starved De-addiction centre
Bathinda, May 25 Five model drug de-addiction centres are to be opened in five cities across the state. One of these is to be built in Bathinda. “While the model drug de-addiction centre will be a 100-bed facility, the present centre is equipped with 25 beds. The groundwork for the new centre is complete and the tenders for the same may be floated by the next week,” said the DC. “Since the new centre will be run by the University, we sent a written request to the University asking it to take over the reins of the existing centre to understand the modalities of its functioning. The proposal has been forwarded to the board of governors of the university and we are yet to get a reply. But we are hopeful that it will be finalised soon,” the DC added. Speaking to Bathinda Tribune, Civil Surgeon Ajay Sahni said, “Yes, the proposal has been sent to the Vice-Chancellor of the university but we have not got any reply from them so far." He added that although the details of the new centre have been finalised, it would take time to come up. Sources said the step was being taken since the existing centre was reeling under severe financial crunch. Meanwhile, sources said once the university takes over the reins of the existing centre, it would be able to infuse life back into it. Last year, it was the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery in Bathinda which had promised to fund the centre. “The refinery sent funds till March 31, 2013. And since the flow of funds from the refinery has stopped, the staff of the centre
has not been paid salaries for the month of April and we have already reached the end of May. While similar centres in other cities have shut down, we are
trying hard to run ours according to the guidelines. But there is no streamlined pattern of funding,” said
Dr Nidhi Gupta, who supervises treatment of addicts at the centre. Fact file

Want to stage Razia Sultan in Qila Mubarak, says actor Sunita Dhir
Bathinda, May 25 Sunita, who started her career in theatre with a play written and produced by Bathinda's theatre genius Balwant Gargi, also rued the fact that there was a dearth of female artistes in theatre. "In theatre classes as well, there are only five girls against every 20 boys. Parents dissuade their daughters from taking up theatre as a full-time profession or even as a hobby," she said. "I began my career in theatre in 1975 and my mother was also shocked when I announced that I wanted to pursue my passion. My father gave me the freedom to go ahead with my choice of profession. My mother was pacified only after she saw my first play. I want to tell all the parents that if a girl like me, born and brought up in Dhuri, can pursue theatre, why can't their daughters do the same," she added. "If parents can let their daughters work in call centres and telephone exchanges, they should let them work in theatre as well," she further added. Sunita, who is known for her roles in Punjabi classics like "Badla Jatti Da" and "Chann Pardesee" and in the more recent films like "Jihne Mera Dil Luteya", "Jatta and Juliet" and "Mel Karade Rabba", emphasised that although comedy Punjabi films are doing very well at the Box Office, producers are hardly ready to invest in films that take up the real issues of the state. "Right now, comedy films are doing well and all the producers are dolling out comedy films. But there is hardly anyone who is ready to invest in films which talk about the real issues that plague Punjab. Most of the characters in Punjabi films are far from reality," she regretted. Sunita Dhir expressed her desire to stage a play at Qila Mubarak in Bathinda. "I wish to stage my play Razia Sultan at Qila Mubarak in Bathinda and I am hopeful that I will succeed in doing so," she said. |

Fresh charges against sodomy accused
Bathinda, May 25 The accused, Surinder Bhambu (60), a resident of Model Town Phase-III here, was booked under Sections 377 and 506 of the IPC at the Kotwali police station on April 3. The complainant, Harish Kumar, stated that he was working at a saloon on the Ajit Road and Bhambu used to call him for massage at his residence. On April 2, Bhambu called him up and asked him to come near the Gol Diggi from where the accused took him to a hotel near Railway Station in a Honda City car. Harish said Bhambu was not arrested by the police as he managed to get interim bail from the court of the Additional Sessions Judge in Bathinda. It is learnt that the accused had also applied for an anticipatory bail in the High Court. The victim alleged that the accused consumed liquor at the hotel and offered him cold drink laced with some intoxicant. He claimed that after consuming the cold drink, he went into semi-conscious state and the accused sodomised him. The victim was admitted to a hospital where he was declared unfit for giving statement to the police. The police recorded the victim's statement on the next day and registered a case against Bhambu. Harish alleged that the saloon on the Ajit Road too was shut down at the behest of Bhambu and he was forced to leave Bathinda and was now residing in Sirsa (Haryana). He claimed that some unidentified people attacked him in Sirsa and also tried to kidnap his cousin. Later on May 2, Harish was beaten up by two unidentified persons on the Santpura road in Bathinda when he came here for a hearing in the case. The victim alleged that the attackers asked him to withdraw his complaint filed against Bhambu. A DDR in this connection was lodged at the Kotwali police station. The complainant's counsel, Harjinder
Sidhu, stated that since the victim was poor, he was being pressurised to withdraw his complaint against the accused. "My client is so poor that he expressed his inability to pay me litigation fee. Now, I have filed a petition in the High Court seeking cancellation of the accused's interim bail at my own expense," Sidhu said. Bhambu, meanwhile, could not be contacted for comments. However, his counsel Jupinder Brar has refuted all the allegations levelled by the complainant during a hearing of the case in the court. Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurdarshan Singh of Kotwali police station, who is investigating the matter, said the police had obtained a video footage from the hotel and recorded the statements of the people present on its premises, but so far no vital clue supporting the complainant's claim could be found. "We have recommended medical examination of the swab obtained from the complainant's body and its report is expected within the next 15 days or so. Suitable action could be taken thereafter," Gurdarshan said. Fact file
