Mumbai, May 25
Even as the clamour for his ouster grew in the wake of his son-in-law’s arrest in connection with the spot-fixing scandal, defiant BCCI president N Srinivasan today refused to resign from his post.

“I will not be bulldozed or railroaded into resigning.... My conscience is clear... I have done nothing wrong,” Srinivasan who arrived in Mumbai hours after the city police arrested his son-in-law Meiyappan told reporters at the airport.

Srinivasan who insisted that the demand for his ouster was orchestrated by vested interests and the media said he would go to Calcutta on Sunday to present the trophy to the winners of the IPL final.

Regarding the arrest of his son-in-law, he said he had nothing to do with the IPL Twenty20 matches and was not involved in the day-to-day affairs of the team. “Have you seen me at any of the IPL matches?” he asked reporters.

Srinivasan further said the law would take its own course in case of Meiyappan. “The law will surely take its own course. The BCCI will strictly follow the rules and act against him with the same alacrity as it did in case of players who were found guilty,” he added.

The BCCI president also denied that a large number of members of the BCCI were against him. “Many members have expressed support for me,” he said. Srinivasan further challenged his rivals to throw him out. “If someone wants to remove me, let them get elected,” Srinivasan said.

Meanwhile, opponents of Srinivasan are attempting to gather support for his ouster. According to sources, BJP leader Arun Jaitley and some other members of the BCCI are trying to muster numbers to impeach Srinivasan. The BCCI has 31 directors of which the votes of 24 are required for impeachment. However Srinivasan claims to have the support of nine of them, say sources.

Heat wave continues to singe Punjab, Haryana
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 25
Persisting heat wave continues to spell misery, particularly for the poor, in the region. While the severe heat wave claimed three lives in Gurgaon, one death has been reported from Hansi in Hisar district of Haryana.

At both places — Gurgaon and Hisar — the maximum temperature recorded today was sizzling 46° Celsius. Both places remained hottest in the region. Doctors confirmed in Gurgaon that three persons died due to heat stroke.

Most places in Haryana experienced searing heat today. Even certain parts of Himachal Pradesh close to the Punjab boundary have been groaning under the unprecedented heat wave. State capital Shimla recorded minimum and maximum temperatures at 21.8 degree and 28.5 deg, 7.5 degrees above normal.

Amritsar, which remained the hottest place in the region for the past two days continuously, saw a slight relief today as temperature came down to 44.5° Celsius. The temperature had reached 47.7° Celsius at Amritsar yesterday. Other places which continue to sizzle include Ludhiana (44° Celsius), Patiala (44.3°C), Una (43.6° C) and Jalandhar (43° C).

Temperature in national capital Delhi settled at 43.5° Celsius, three degrees above normal, against yesterday's 45 degrees Celsius. Some respite seems to be in store for the northwest, which is currently reeling under severe heat wave conditions. According to the IMD’s latest forecast, the maximum temperatures would fall by about 2 to 3 degree C over northwest, west and the adjoining Central India during the next two to three days “leading to subsiding of prevailing heat wave conditions over these regions”.

Duststorms or thunderstorms are likely to occur at one or two places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh in the next 48 hours while rain and thundershowers are expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. IMD officials are also expecting the heat wave to “become normal” by the next week.

The mercury is currently hovering above its normal level. The minimum temperatures are above normal by 4-6°C over J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, east Rajasthan, northeast Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, south Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and by 2-3°C over parts of west Rajasthan, Gujarat, west Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Assam.

Interestingly, the heat wave in the north may actually accelerate the advent of monsoon. Dry hot weather conditions are favourable for the advancement of the monsoon. Conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over some parts of south and the central Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal during the next three days, though it is still a few more days before it hits the Indian mainland. IMD officials maintain that the rains might hit the west coast in the second week of June.

Bookies in several parts of Mumbai are now concentrating on the ICC Champions Trophy which will begins in England on May 30. Veteran punters who bet during matches say bookies are lying low following the latest controversy and only allow their trusted customers to get in touch.

"Books on the Champions Trophy will open on May 30," says a punter in the Mumbai suburbs. The buzz is that bookies are in a wait-and-watch mode when it comes to matches concerning India. The cricketing fraternity expects many more players to be arrested for their links with bookies after the current edition of IPL ends on Sunday.

The police says, bookies have already made their 'arrangements' ahead of the Champions Trophy. Pakistani umpire Assad Rauf may been plied with expensive gifts, including smartphones, gold jewellery and high-end watches by bookies Pawan and Sanjay Jaipur to ensure his co-operation during the Champions Trophy, feel police officers. Rauf has been dropped from the panel of umpires for the tournament after his alleged links with bookies surfaced last week.

Investigators probing the spot fixing scandal have named a company listed on the London Stock Exchange as being linked to the Dawood Ibrahim gang which is said to control a big chunk of cricket betting in India. Betting is legal in Europe and the odds on various sporting events are prominently displayed on betting companies' websites.

"Apart from physical betting many large bets are placed on this website using international credit cards," says a police official.
