Pune, May 11
Mitchell Johnson led the way with an economical figures of 2/8 off his four overs before skipper Rohit Sharma’s patient knock of 37 off 41 balls guided Mumbai to a win with seven balls to spare at the Sahara Subrata Roy International Stadium. Speedsters Lasith Malinga and Abu Nechim Ahmed, too, came up with impressive performances, picking up two wickets each. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also impressed with a spell of one for 14, which included the wicket of Yuvraj Singh, who was the lone bright spot for the Warriors with a 29-ball 33. Chasing a modest total, Mumbai were off to a disastrous start, losing opener Dwayne Smith in the innings’ first delivery, the batsman’s off-stump knocked over by Ashok Dinda. Sachin Tendulkar helped himself to a few boundaries before Ajantha Mendis had the veteran batsman caught at long-on by Manish Pandey. Ambati Rayudu smashed a few quick runs with the help of two fours and a six, but he failed to see the visitors through as Dinda had him caught at deep square-leg. Sharma, however, was composed at the other end. With Mumbai needing 13 off the last three overs, their latest million-dollar signing, Glenn Maxwell, playing in his first match, hit Dinda for a four and six to make the scores level. Earlier, Johnson was the standout performer with the ball for Mumbai. Electing to bat, Pune Warriors were off to a poor start as both their openers, Robin Uthappa and skipper Aaron Finch, departed in quick succession. Johnson once again struck early as he dismissed Finch for 10 when the Australian ended up hitting a short of length delivery straight to short cover, where Dwayne Smith completed an easy catch. Malinga then trapped Uthappa leg before for 11, with the Pune scorecard reading 25 for two inside five overs. — PTI Scoreboard Pune Warriors Uthappa lbw b Malinga 11 Extras: (b 1, lb 2, nb 1) 4 Mumbai Indians Smith b Dinda 0 Extras: (w 4) 4 |
Darren Sammy stuns Punjab
Mohali, May 11 Sunrisers did not have to toil hard as Kings XI Punjab courteously decided to pave way for them and retreated into oblivion as the game drew to end. The pacifier Darren Sammy has been indulging in for quite sometime now needs to be passed on to the Kings XI Punjab who are in need of it more than anyone else. Sammy scalped (4/21) four wickets and performed the ritual dutifully to celebrate the team's revived fortune. Hyderabad put up a decent total of 150/7 and then had to just bide the time as hosts put up yet another miserable performance. Adam Gilchrist (26) and R Sathish (25) tried their bit but were undone by their partners at the other end. The most guilty among them being Luke Pomersbach (33;40b, 1x6,1x4) who kept on lingering till the end. Nothing much was expected from the Kings XI Punjab tail, and hence a comprehensive defeat for the team was imminent as they refused to shed mediocrity this year too. To top up the humiliation, Punjab acquired the dubious distinction of putting up their lowest total (120/9) of the season in a crucial match. Hyderabad, on the other hand, had Darren Sammy (4/21), Dale Steyn (2/20) in their ranks to lap up the opportunity provided to them on the platter. Earlier, Sandeep Sharma, playing his first match of the season, did try his best by scalping three crucial scalps in quick succession to restrict the visiting side to 150/7. Brief Scores
Sunrisers Hyderabad: 150/7 in 20 overs (Parthiv Patel 61, Thisara Perera 32, Karan Sharma 22, Shikhar Dhawan 15, Sandeep Sharma 3/21, Parvinder Awana 1/35,Piyush Chawla 1/20) Kings XI Punjab: 120/9 in 20 overs
(Pomersbach 33 not out, Gilchrist 26; Sammy 4/22, Steyn 2/20) |

It’s battle royal as CSK, RR lock horns
Jaipur, May 11 Rajasthan’s citadel has been breached just once in the tournament so far when they were outplayed by Mumbai Indians, and the hosts would look to sign off their home campaign on a high. Moreover, Rajasthan were beaten by the table-toppers in an away game and they would like to return the compliment. Rajasthan have done exceedingly well while chasing, their last two victories were comprehensive, and Chennai have emerged as superb defenders. The batsmen in both the teams are in sparkling form. The only thing that gives a slight advantage to Chennai is their bowling. Mohit Sharma has been a revelation upfront while R Ashwin and Dwayne Bravo have done well in the middle overs. The key to Rajasthan would be to contain the marauding Chennai batsmen. The way they recovered from the shocking defeat against Mumbai Indians, Chennai have only looked more dangerous. Even if Rajasthan get Michael Hussey or Suresh Raina out early, they have to contend with in-from CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has changed many a games on his own. James Faulknar, Ajit Chandila, Kevon Cooper and Shane Watson have a tough task at hand but if they click, Rajasthan would be in with a very good chance. Rahul Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane, Watson and Sanju Samson form a very formidable batting line-up, capable of chasing down any total. — PTI |

Randhir, Malhotra remain adamant on pullout from meet
New Delhi, May 11 Malhotra and Randhir had decided to boycott the meeting came a day after the IOC agreed to include Hockey India General Secretary Narinder Batra and Jharkhand Olympic Association R K Anand in the IOA delegation for the meeting, in addition to the four-member list submitted earlier. The meeting, which is expected to draw a roadmap for India’s return to the Olympic fold, will also be attended by Sports Minister Jitendra Singh, Sports Secretary P K Deb, Beijing Olympics gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra and Olympian sailor Malav Shroff. Randhir, who was expected to play a key role in the parleys pulled out expressing unhappiness over the composition of the delegation. There were reports that he could still go to Lausanne and that his stand was a pressure tactic. “There is no change in my stand, I am not going to Lausanne. I am not trying to use any pressure tactics,” Randhir told. Asked how the IOA delegation would go to Lausanne when its acting President has withdrawn, Randhir said, “I don’t know. As far as I know, Malhotra has withdrawn his four-member delegation, so, anybody who goes there has no recognition.” Taking a dig at those who have decided to go despite the withdrawal, Randhir said, “Anybody can go to Lausanne as tourists. It is a wonderful place and everybody would like to go there.” It is learnt that Sports Secretary P K Deb also called up Randhir urging him to reconsider his decision but the veteran administrator has not relented yet. — PTI |
Anand jumps to 2nd after Topalov win
Sandnes, May 11 Sergey Karjakin of Russia scored his third straight victory at the expense of Wang Hao of China to lead the table with three points. Anand and Levon Aronian follow him, a full point behind. Teimoru Radjabov of Azerbaijan finally won a game, disposing the challenge of local hopeful Jon Ludvig Hammer to move to a fifty per cent score. With six rounds to come in the ten-player tournament, Radjabov shares the fourth spot along with world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway, Hikaru Nakamura of United States and Russian Peter Svidler on 1.5 points apiece. Wang Hao and Topalov are sharing the eighth spot on one point each while Hammer is at the bottom, yet to open his account. The day produced three decisive games and local star Carlsen had to settle for his third straight draw with Nakamura. Russian Svidler too shared the point with Aronian making sure he stayed in the hunt as well. Anand produced his best when needed. Playing the white side of a Najdorf Sicilian, the Indian ace went for the English attack and came up with some startling new ideas that caught Topalov unawares. It may be recalled that in 2010, a superior preparation had given Anand a victory in the last game of the world championship match against Topalov and the Bulgarian still doesn’t seem to have recovered from that. As the game unfolded, Topalov was in troubles in the middle game and after he was through with his preparation, Anand was seen plotting the final onslaught on the kingside. Topalov had to part with his queen for two pieces but they were not enough as the game progressed. Anand won in 41 moves. Karjakin strangled Wang Hao out of a Sicilian Rauzer where the former played white. The Chinese had the impression of coming out with an opening surprise but Karjakin was up to the task as he got a tangible advantage in the endgame that ensued on board. — PTI |

Serena, Sharapova, Nadal in finals
Madrid, May 11 Chasing a 50th career title at the clay event in the Spanish capital, defending champion Williams was far too strong for Italian seventh seed Errani on the Manolo Santana show court, winning 7-5 6-2 before Sharapova made short work of 16th seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia to win their semifinal 6-4 6-3. The Russian second seed and world number two, 26, will replace 31-year-old American Williams at the top of the rankings if she gets the better of her in Sunday’s title match. Williams, whose interests away from tennis include fashion and acting, said she had been avoiding “too many extra-curricular activities” to concentrate on match preparation. “I usually just stay in my room really and be the most boring person you can ever imagine,” she told a news conference. “That’s kind of the way I get focused.” Sharapova will be a different proposition to Errani, though she has only beaten the American twice in 14 attempts, and never on clay, and both those victories came almost a decade ago. Sharapova said she needed to be more consistent. “Obviously the goal is to keep that level for the whole match and to take my opportunities. “But I’m setting myself up in a position where I can try to change that around.” |
Nadal set for fifth title after return
Madrid: Rafa Nadal is one win
away from a fifth title since returning from injury after the Spanish
world number five thumped compatriot Pablo Andujar 6-0 6-4 on Saturday
to reach the Madrid Open final.
With his customary strapping on the
troublesome left knee that sidelined him for seven months, home
favourite Nadal was in scintillating form as he raced through the first
set on the sun-drenched clay the centre court. Andujar, a tournament
wildcard ranked 113 in the world, put up more of a fight in the second
but Nadal secured a fourth break in the ninth game and served out to
move a step closer to his third title at the Masters event in the
Spanish capital. Nadal will meet sixth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych,
runner-up last year to Roger Federer, or Federer’s Swiss compatriot
Stanislas Wawrinka, the 15th seed, in Sunday’s final. — Reuters |

Rosberg leads Mercedes lockout with Spanish pole
BARCELONA, May 11 The pole was Rosberg’s second in a row after Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, took pole in China last month. Red Bull’s triple world champion and series leader Sebastian Vettel qualified third with Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen, currently second overall and 10 points behind the German, alongside on the second row for Lotus. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, the local favourite at his home race, will start fifth with Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa next to him. Mercedes last swept the front row in China last season, a race won by Rosberg while then team mate Michael Schumacher failed to finish. Saturday was the first time since 1955, when Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio and Britain’s Stirling Moss were racing for the ‘Silver Arrows’, that a Mercedes works team had chalked up three poles in a row. The German manufacturer left Formula One as a works team in 1955, however, and only returned in 2010 after buying the title-winning Brawn GP. The statistics suggests Mercedes have a strong chance, given that only once in the last 22 years has a driver won in Barcelona without starting on the front row - and that was Schumacher in 1996 from third. Hamilton, denied pole in Spain with McLaren last year due to a fuel irregularity, was fastest in the first two phases of qualifying but Rosberg made sure of the pole with a time of one minute 20.718 seconds. Hamilton’s best was 1.20.972. There was despondency at Hamilton’s former team McLaren, struggling to extract performance from their car, with 2009 world champion Jenson Button failing to make the final stage of qualifying for the first time this year. The Briton will start 14th, with the new upgrade package brought to this race failing to live up to expectations more than anyone could have feared. — Reuters |

London, May 11 Christian Benteke put Villa in front in the first half with his 19th league goal of the season and Chelsea looked in real trouble when midfielder Ramires was sent off for a second caution just before halftime.
The Londoners looked flat and lethargic but the turning-point came in the 58th minute when Benteke was dismissed for a second booking. Lampard equalised with a crisp left-foot shot two minutes later and the England midfielder went past Bobby Tambling's record of 202 Chelsea goals when he slid in for the winner in the 88th minute. "People have been talking about the record a lot and it's great to get it finally especially in an important game," an emotional Lampard told Sky Sports television. "But I didn't want to celebrate too much because Bobby has been ill lately and I wanted to be respectful to a great man." Visiting captain John Terry was carried off on a stretcher in the 72nd minute with his left leg in a brace after being hurt in a collision in Villa's penalty area. Interim manager Rafael Benitez said Terry had twisted his ankle and the defender would need a scan to determine the full extent of the injury. Chelsea occupy third position with 72 points and one game to go, five points ahead of Arsenal and six clear of Tottenham Hotspur who both have two matches left. Villa's defeat meant they are still not certain of avoiding relegation. Paul Lambert's team are 13th in the table on 40 points, five ahead of Wigan Athletic who are in the third and final relegation place with two matches remaining. Villa's young side, hammered 8-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December, seemed hell bent on avenging that defeat early on and it came as no surprise when Benteke ran beyond Gary Cahill before calmly beating keeper Petr Cech in the 14th minute. — Reuters |
