Waqf Board takes possession of seven shops
Jalandhar, May 10 The team of the Waqf Board, comprising Executive Officer (EO), Estate Office, Rashid Mohammad and Waqf Board counselor, Mukhtiar Mohammad, reached the spot along with a heavy posse of police and got all the shops vacated. EO Waqf Board said the action had come following orders of the Supreme Court passed recently in a case titled Ram Murti vs Waqf Board. He said the 450 sq yard land now would be taken into possession by the board and the shops would be demolished to pave way for a new construction to be planned later. Top police officials reached the spot apprehending backlash from the shopkeepers or even the management of Gurdwara Dewan Asthan falling at the rear of the shops. The shopkeepers, who were disheartened on getting displaced, had no option but to quickly start shifting their items. Rajesh Bahri, owner of an electronics goods shop, said he and his father had run the business from the place for the past 25 years. The matter was in court since then. “Since we cannot move against the orders of the SC, we have to vacate the shop, though I am worried on how and from where to restart my whole business,” he pointed out. The shopkeepers said they had been paying rent to Ram Murti, who has lost the case, and were later giving donations to the gurdwara. |

Greenbelt development: Cong councillors allege scam
Jalandhar, May 10
Congress councillors Sushil Rinku, Bal Kishan Bali and Simranjeet Singh Bunty accompanied by other members of the group, including Independent councillor Amit Dhal, former councillor Mohinder Singh Gullu and Major Singh said: “The process of payment to the contractor of running bill of Rs 17,97,618 for the incomplete project is in the final stage as the officials concerned of the B&R Department and MCJ Commissioner Vinay Bublani have already signed the file for making the payment." Demanding stopping of the payment to the contractor, the group said: “The JE, SDO and XEN of the B&R Department of the MCJ are supposed to visit the site before giving their nod for making payment to the contractor. Either they had not visited the site or they turned a blind eye to the ground situation because no green belt had been developed there.” Mediapersons, who visited the site, were surprised to see that not even a single rare and specimen plant was available there as mentioned in the measurement book regarding the project. On the contrary, tractors, cars and other vehicles were seen parked on the roadside near the BSF Chowk meant for planting such rare saplings. According to the measurement book, the contractor was to be paid a total running bill of Rs 17,97,618, including Rs 9,47,293 for planting 1,157 rare and specimen saplings. The cost of each rare sapling has been mentioned in the measurement book as Rs 818. It is also stated in the book that Rs 1,59,600 is to be paid for dismantling, Rs 2,31,124 for removal of Malba, Rs 2,20,249 for earth filling and Rs 2,39,352 for planting shrubs. Nothing had been dismantled at the site, no malba was created there so the question of removing malba does not occur and no earth filling was seemingly done at the site. MCJ Superintending Engineer (B&R Department) Kulwinder Singh evaded a direct reply and said: “No councillor has made any complaint regarding the project. As and when any complaint is made, the entire matter will be checked and verified.” Congress councillor Sushil Rinku said the tender for the project was floated on March 14, 2011, and Local Bodies Minister Bhagat Chunni Lal initiated the project by planting the first sapling at the site on July 16, 2012. |

Seven get life term in murder case
Jalandhar, May 10 The judge acquitted Santoshi Nagar resident Sunil Mehta while passing the orders against Sandeep Kumar of Lamma Pind, Dalip Kumar of Aman Nagar, Raj Kumar of Adampur, Vinod Kumar, Sukhdev Singh, Kulwant Angrez and Kulwant Sahota, all four Santoshi Nagar residents. A case under Sections 302 and 148 of the IPC had been lodged at the Rama Mandi police station against nine persons, including the seven convicted, Sunil Mehta, who has now got acquitted, and Satnam Satta, a resident of Lamma Pind, who was declared a PO since November 29 last year. Two clerks arrested for forging ADM's signatures
Jalandhar, May 10 Upon confession by the two clerks, Gopal Singh and Balwinder Singh, they were arrested from the office by the Nawi Baradari police this evening and booked under Sections 420, 467 and 120-B of the IPC. The forged signatures on the file of the Arms Act renewal case by an Adampur-based applicant were noticed by the staff of the Suwidha Centre. After his arms licence for a pistol expired 10 months ago, the applicant Ravinder Singh had sought a renewal on February 6 this year. At this, Bhardwaj had issued the applicant a showcause notice on March 18 to explain why his licence be not suspended for the weapon had remained in his illegal possession. “There is a possibility that the applicant got apprehensive that I would not clear his case, so he connived with the dealing clerk to put on record his reply to the showcause notice, on which he even forged my signatures. The notice should have been ideally received by me from the applicant in person, but he never came and tried to bypass using this tactic,” alleged Bhardwaj. The Suwidha staff said they felt a bit suspicious when the applicant was after them, insisting that they be issued renewed licence at the earliest. They said that they checked the file carefully and were a bit doubtful regarding ADM's signatures. Fifth forgery in administration

Tempo driver arrested for woman’s murder
Jalandhar, May 10 The accused, Hira Lal, reportedly had illicit relations with the woman, the daughter of a panchayat member Gej Ram of Nandanpur village. While Poonam had two broken marriages, even the accused is married. The victim’s body was found lying at a secluded place in the fields close to the railway tracks with strangulation marks around her neck and a blunt head injury. Narrating the episode which led to the murder, DSP Kartarpur Jasvir Singh Rai said the two had illicit relations and Hira Lal was even paying for the woman’s day-to-day expenses. “Their relations turned sour when Hira Lal spotted Poonam two months ago talking to a stranger at the bus stand. The accused said that he felt belittled, as Poonam slapped her during an argument and since then he had been planning to eliminate her,” the DSP explained. He further elaborated, “On May 3, the accused took Poonam along on a tempo to Jandu Singha, where they together had a soft drink. They then went to Alawalpur and reached Ballan and via the Kishangarh road reached Kartarpur. Here they again enjoyed a cold drink and moved off to Tahli Sahib and further Kot Karar Khan village. At the stand, the accused fetched an alcohol bottle, had it secretly and took her to Khera Majha village. The duo had barely crossed the village when Poonam sensed that the accused had taken the drink and slapped him. In retaliation, the tempo driver slapped her thrice and in a fit of rage, threw her off the tempo. During the fall, the woman suffered head injury. Picking injured Poonam, he again drove off the tempo, took another alcohol bottle from Mand village and took her to Wariana village. Hiding his auto at some distance, he dragged Poonam to the fields and strangulated her there.” Asked where he had been hiding all this while, SHO Maqsudan Piara Singh said he first went to his aunt’s place. “From there, he went to his own house in Wariana, where he had been hiding for the past six days,” he added. A case has been registered under Sections 302, 34 of the IPC. |

'Sadda Haq' opens to packed houses
Jalandhar, May 10 While security had been beefed up outside all theatres screening the film in the city, there were no reports of any untoward incidents owing to the screening in any part of the district. Inside theatres, however, much sloganeering and hooting marked the film screening
today. The film ran to packed houses and in the morning show, some people had to return home as they could not get any
tickets. Students and Sikh organisations in the city had earlier backed the film. Their support was evident during the screening as well as with the chanting of slogans while the film ran. A majority of the audience watching the film was students.
The film mostly received rave reviews and reactions from fans. There were a few voices of disappointment from people who had expected
more. Balvir Singh, a city student, said, "The film came after a lot of delay and there was much excitement among us to watch it. It was a very good film and worth the fight which was fought for it." Shoaib, a teacher at a local academy, said, "It was a good film and everyone should watch it. It's a peek into history and a very different Punjabi film. In fact, contrary to the hype it garnered, I did not see anything instigative in
it." Roop an RJ at Radio Mirchi, said, "The performances of some of the actors were very poor. While the lead actor (Sidhu) was good, some support guys let the film down. On the whole, it was a great
effort." Students Amandeep Singh and Parminder Singh said the film was an insightful portrayal of the dark era of
Punjab. Geetu, another city student, said, "I was very happy the day the ban was lifted and had been wanting to watch the film since then. Films based on real issues need to be made more often." |
Cinema involves a sense of purpose: Puri
Jalandhar, May 10 While glitz and glamour might be the crowd-puller of any film industry, it is the grassroots toilers, who lend substance to it and earn it respect. Om Puri, the legend, has seen a fair bit of both sides. He is the humane star who, after a 30-year-long run in the industry, can be credited with pulling off any role with effortless ease and staying true to the cause of cinema with a
purpose. In city to promote his upcoming Punjabi film, “Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De”, here last evening, Om Puri laid bare the story of the man the industry looks up
to. Speaking of whether he thought the passion of the independent, reformist 80s (cinema) was missing in the industry today, Puri said, “Bollywood started with people who were writers, poets, thinkers. Somewhere down the line, the businessmen crept in. While some businessmen are noble as well, it is the crooked men who intentionally pass inferior stuff as quality work who bring bad name to a profession. People who say “we are just entertainers” are also getting away from the real issues. Cinema involves a sense of purpose,” Puri
says. “But I see about 10 directors today, who reassure me that things are changing for the better,” he says.
Asked which category of actors he puts himself in, he said, “I have made my share of compromises. But my compromises haven’t been ruthless. For the first 15 years I refused any commercial offers I got. But then I thought, Om Puri, what will you do when you get old and ill.”
“During the five-month-long shoot for Tamas for which I was getting paid Rs 80,000, I asked Govind Nihalani to give me days off to do a film by this tycoon, which would earn me Rs 1 lakh in 15 days. My home had only mattresses for furniture and lungis for curtains, I wanted to dress it up. Kind as he is, Govind
agreed.” “Even today, I don’t have money to make frequent visits abroad or to afford regular stays in five-star hotels for me or my family. I can’t travel in a local bus because I would be hounded. You will often see stars who are poor go into hiding later in their profession,” Puri
says. However, he says he has had a fulfilling life and has done in his duty well, so he has no
regrets. Speaking of the government’s role in the industry, he says. “Films are such a powerful medium. They can be helpful to the government too for reform. Films to further noble government policies and agendas could be great idea. Politicians need to get more sensitive about films. I feel every year there should be a film festival for parliamentarians.”
Taking a dig at the top guys, he said, “We make a film on Naxalism, we go to the jungles to shoot in rain storm and the sun. The researchers spend years on research. But when mantriji gets a call about rioting or violence, he calls the SSP. The SSP calls the thanedar and sometime later they issue a statement "sthiti niyantran mein hai". That attitude has to
stop.” His journey is rife with stories like. For the "City of Joy", he perfected his character of a slum dweller by running bare foot on streets with a hand-pulled rickshaw, oblivious of stones or thorns pricking his feet. At 40, it was the first time he got a pedicure for his cracked, blistered feet.
Speaking about his re-entry into the Punjabi cinema, he said, “It feels great to be doing a Punjabi film. I started with 'Chann Pardesi', then did 'Long Da Lishkara' and later 'Baghi'. About five years ago I did a film called 'Yaarian'. My last project was a film called 'Bhaji in Problem' which is an Akshay Kumar production and stars
Ghuggi.” About the contemporary state of the Punjabi cinema, he said, “During a brief period, Punjabi cinemas thrived on crass and double meaning humour, but today humour is clean and well-meaning romances are being made. I think it is also the time to move ahead now. Punjabi cinema is successful and popular. It should use the opportunity to move ahead and make more sensible films. The concern should be to reach out to the
world.” While he banks on directors like Prakash Jha, Dibakar Banerji and Anurag Kashyap and Tigmanshu Dhulia, who he says are a big hope for the industry, he is, for now concentrating on his role in Punjabi cinema.
He will next be seen in "Jatt Boys", "Putt Jattan De" and "Bhaji in Problem". |
