Cases of swindler women robbing innocent persons on the pretext of befriending them are on the rise. In the recent incident, a government schoolteacher of Rakba village fell victim to the honey trap and was kidnapped by six persons.
20-yr-old falls off roof, dies
Ludhiana, April 28
A 20-year-old youth died after falling off a roof at Vishwakarma Colony today. The deceased has been identified as Vinit Kumar. He was studying in Class IX and was working for an orchestra in the evening to eke out his living.
Health dept plans to start SMS service

Making residents aware of diseases through SMSes still seems to be distant dream for the district health department.
Following the pattern of Delhi, officials of the Ludhiana district health department also planned to start the SMS service last year, but the plan did not materialise.
RTI activist booked for forgery, impersonation
Ludhiana, April 28
The city police has booked a self-proclaimed RTI activist, who was allegedly settling personal scores and harassing his son's father-in-law by seeking information under the Right to Information Act.
The accused has been identified Gurjit Singh, a resident of Rishi Nagar.

Railways to run summer special trains from May 1

Hike in rail freight hits industry

The increase in the freight charges is giving tough times to the local industry as steel prices have gone up by 5-8 per cent. Rail freight charges on the movement of iron ore as well as finished steel have been increased. The prices of several other commodities like cement have also gone up with transportation getting costlier.
Government schools sans English, maths teachers

The state government is in process of implementing the Right to Education (RTE) in true spirits. But at maximum government middle schools in the state, there are no teachers for teaching important subjects like maths and English. The only alternative adopted by the state government has been hiring the services of science and social science teachers to teach maths and English, respectively. The impact shows is projected in their results as maximum students get compartment in maths and English in Classes from VI to VIII.
303 pvt schools under PSEB scanner

The checking of as many as 303 private schools, which are located in below 500 square yards of land and the list of which was sent by the Punjab School Education Board
(PSEB) to the District Education Department here, seems to have become a Herculean task for the department as about 20 schools of the total number are such, which do not have proper, valid addresses and in that case, it would be too difficult for the teams to visit the schools.
City-based poetess releases book

A book titled “A Silent Dream” was released today. A collection of poems, it has been penned by city-based young poet Bhagya Shree and this is her first book.
Released amid the presence of noted personalities including DIG Fayyaz Farooqui, prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill, president of Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Dr Kewal Dhir, chairman Adeeb International, the book comprises about 60 poems, written over a period of four years. |

Play depicting shades of relationship staged

A play titled 'Rishtey' was staged at Punjabi Bhawan here last evening.
Written by Dr SN Sewak, the play brings to the fore the various shades of
relationships. Organised by the Ludhiana Kala Manch, in collaboration with Senior Citizen Welfare Association and Punjabi
Sahit Akademi, the Punjabi play shows conflict caused by the generation gap.
District chemists plan strike on May 10

Transfers in Excise and Taxation Dept

Transfers and shuffling have been effected in the Excise and Taxation Department in view of the coming Lok Sabha elections 2014, which are likely to be announced anytime.
According to the Election Commission, the officials, who have been posted in a district for the past three years, have to be shifted in any case.

Five booked for sale of kerosene on black market

The police has claimed to have busted two gangs involved in the sale of kerosene on the black market. At least five members of these gangs have been booked under the Essential Commodity Act and 4,100 litres of kerosene and the vehicle used in the crime seized by the police.
Three arrested for consuming hookah

The Srabha Nagar police cracked down at a dance party at a house in Sunet village and arrested three youths who were consuming hookah.
