Bhiwani, April 18
Two persons have been arrested for the murder of a Dalit youth in Devsar village here today. Police made no disclosure about the motive behind the gruesome killing, saying it would be premature to do so.

An uneasy calm prevails in Devsar village, where a Dalit youth was murdered in a brutal manner by tying him to a tree and then ramming a vehicle against his body.

Police vehicles continued patrolling in the village in view of the tension as the Dalits have linked yesterday’s killing with an incident in November when some upper caste men stopped a Dalit youth from the victim’s family from riding a mare on his wedding.

The police has arrested two persons in connection with the murder, but has not commented on the motive behind the crime. Raj Pal, father of the 20-year-old victim Jaimal, has been maintaining that his son has been brutalised owing to a five-month-old grudge the members of the upper caste of the village have been nursing against them.

They (members of upper class) had stopped a Dalit youth from the victim’s family from riding a mare on his wedding. “Since we had refused to take humiliation lying down and lodged a complaint with the police, the members of the upper caste have killed my son mercilessly,” alleged Raj Pal.

Bhiwani SP Simardeep Singh, however, denied that the killing has any connection with the mare-riding incident. “Of the two persons arrested by the police, Parveen is a Rajput and Kuldeep is a Dalit. Hence, no caste angle is involved in the matter. The accused have revealed a motive behind the crime, but we will substantiate their revelations with evidences we collect before making the motive public,” said Simardeep Singh.

Meanwhile, Hisar Range IGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor visited the village and inspected the spot where Jaimal was killed and his body dumped to make it look like an accident. A team from National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) is also scheduled to reach Bhiwani. Meanwhile, the police has handed over the victim’s body to the parents after autopsy.
