J&K minister slaps senior officer in full public view
Dinesh Manhotra/TNS

Jammu, April 18
Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Home Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo allegedly slapped Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kishtwar Development Authority (KDA) Riaz Ahmed Choudhary in full public view at the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) of Kishtwar district this morning.

When the officer tried to resist slapping by holding the minister’s hand, National Conference workers present there gave a severe thrashing to the CEO.

Although the minister denied slapping the officer, the CEO told The Tribune over phone from Kishtwar that he had already lodged a written complaint with the police against Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo.

“As the erring minister holds the portfolio of Home Department, I doubt if the police will dare to register a case against him,” he said. “Today’s incident has set a wrong precedent and politicians may develop a feeling that they can assault officers without any reason,” he added.

Due to the scheduled visit of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to Kishtwar today, he was given an assignment by the District Development Commissioner (DDC), Kishtwar, the officer said. “I had been busy preparing a report about the development activities undertaken in the region,” he said.

“At 9.55 this morning, the DDC asked me to reach TRC because the minister was reviewing preparations for the Chief Minister’s visit. As soon as I reached there, the minister started shouting at me. When I tried to convince the minister that I had been given an important assignment by my seniors, he slapped me twice,” Choudhary alleged. “When the minister tried to slap me the third time, I caught hold of his hand. But within no time National Conference supporters started thrashing me like anything,” he added.

All this happened in the presence of senior police and civil officers who were accompanying the minister, he said.

Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo later denied the allegation levelled by the officer. Nothing had happened at the TRC and he was just reviewing preparations for the Chief Minister’s visit, he said.

The Opposition PDP has slammed Kichloo for attacking a senior officer. “It reflects the prevailing lawlessness in Jammu and Kashmir,” PDP spokesman Rangil Singh said.

Senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma said the BJP would not allow the National Conference to terrorise officers in such a way. He demanded resignation of the MoS, Home, and asked the police authorities to register an FIR in the case. In case the police failed to register an FIR against Kichloo and his men, the BJP would resort to an agitation, seeking justice for the officer, he added.
