Abohar students win laurels: Arshia, Ankush, Paras Kataria and Saurabhdeep Arora of LRS DAV Senior Secondary Model School here have clinched gold medal and merit certificates in the National Maths and Science Olympiad, principal Kusum Khungar said. Students from 1,000 schools had appeared in the national science talent search exam organised by the Unified Council in 14 countries. 12 booked: Vipan Setia, Rajesh Setia, Ajay Sappanwali, Deepak Sharma, Jugnu and seven other persons have been booked under the IPC and the Arms Act following a clash between warring factions of liquor contractors. Balluana DSP Veer Chand has been asked to investigate. Run over by train: A married woman, identified as Saroj Rani of street No. 11 in Nai Abadi here, was run over by a passenger train while she was trying to cross the railway track near the Seetogunno manned level-crossing. The GRP has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.

Man kills wife, hangs self: A man allegedly killed his wife before himself committing suicide in the same room by hanging himself from the ceiling in Bhikhi town of Mansa district on Wednesday. The police said prima facie it appeared the couple had an argument, following which the man hit his wife with a wooden grinder (found near the spot). The police said he later tried to stem the blood flow, but could not succeed. The couple is survived by their two sons, aged 18 and 16, who were asleep in an adjoining room.

Transport Dept starts e-governance: The Punjab Transport Department has launched e-governance project across all 22 districts of the state, said Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar on Wednesday. Dependence of general public on officials has been minimalised with the introduction of this online project, he said. Registration at dealers' desk, online payment of fees, taxes and licenses at training institutes have been included in the computerisation process, he said. He said the department had also introduced Smart Card facility for driving licences and certificates for registration of vehicles.Ferozepur
21 held under NDPS Act: In a massive offensive against drug peddlers in the district, the Ferozepur police on Wednesday nabbed 21 persons and registered 18 cases under the NDPS Act. Senior Superintendent of Police Varinder Pal Singh said a record number of cases have been registered under the NDPS Act in a single day, adding that narcotics and intoxicating tablets in large quantity besides psychotropic material have been recovered from the accused. The SSP said the offensive will continue and more arrests were likely to be made on the basis of the interrogation of the arrested drug peddlers. Moga
Addict dies after consuming poison: A 40-year-old man, Balwinder Singh Kala of Charik village, allegedly died after consuming a poisonous substance on Tuesday. The deceased's father stated to the police that his son was a drug addict and could have accidentally consumed the poisonous substance. The police has initiated inquest proceedings and sent the viscera sample to a laboratory. Body recovered from Moga drain: The police has recovered the body of a 65-year-old man, Amar Singh of Manuke village, from a drain flowing near Phoolewala village in the district. The deceased's family stated to the police that the man had been missing from his house since April 11. The police has initiated inquest proceedings into the incident after getting a post-mortem conducted on the body. The police also recovered an unidentified body from the main bus stand of the city on Tuesday.
