No hike in UT power tariff
Chandigarh, April 17
Providing a major relief to city residents, the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) today dismissed a petition filed by the UT Electricity Department for a 48.68 per cent hike in the power tariff in all categories. There will now be no power tariff hike during the financial year 2013-14 and the existing tariff will continue.

Love marriage ends in minor’s death; husband rounded up
Panchkula, April 17
In a gory end to a love story of two teenagers, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly murdered and her body dumped at the General Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula, late last night. The victim, Kusum, a resident of Sector 56, Chandigarh, had a love marriage with a 20-year-old youth of the Rajiv Colony in Sector 16, Panchkula, four months ago.

Seventeen-year-old Kusum, whose body was dumped by her husband, Sachin, at the General Hospital, Sector 6, had met him for the first time at their common school. She was a Class X student, while he was studying in Class XII. Sachin got attracted to her when she led the school cricket team to victory.

The Income Tax Department today attached the property of one of the business partners of Sohi Banquet, Balbir Singh, for non-payment of taxes (including interest) to the tune of Rs 1.75 crore for the assessment year 2004-05.

Rash driving: 2 PU students suspended
Chandigarh, April 17
Panjab University (PU) today suspended two students of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) and barred them from attending classes for rash driving on the campus, that had led to a major accident yesterday.

At PGI, patients have a harrowing time

Raj Bahadur’s stint at GMCH didn’t have UPSC nod: Doc

Dr Raj Bahadur’s tenure as the Director-Principal of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, has been full of controversies since his appointment in December 2007. His colleagues and those who were in the race for this top post have challenged his selection alleging that it violated the UPSC norms, and also moved the High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in this regard.

Protest leaves commuters stranded

Hundreds of commuters were left stranded for four hours when around 300 non-teaching staff members of the Sarv Sikhiya Abhiyan blocked the Kharar-Ropar highway at around 2 pm to press  for their demands at Kharar today.

The initiative of a Municipal Corporation councillor to give his one month salary to the family of 33-year-old Harpeet Singh Sodhi, who died in a road accident involving stray cattle, has gained support from fellow councillors, NGOs and individual city residents.

Ambala division bags five awards

As many as five awards were bagged by the northern railway Ambala division on the Railway Day. The function was held in Mumbai where in the Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal conferred the awards on senior divisional operations manager, Ambala, Nar Singh, senior divisional engineer manager, R R Raju, station master, Sadugarh, Ram Phool Meena, loco-pilot, Ram Diptta and tax commissioner reservation, Manoj Kumar for their excellent performance in the last financial year.

Construction work on causeways begins at Khanpur bridge
Mohali, April 17
With a motive of making the area traffic-jam free, the District Administration has started construction of causeways along the Khanpur Bridge at Kharar here. “A sum of Rs 3.30 crores would be spent on the project, which would be completed by June 30”, said Varun Roojam, the Mohali Deputy Commissioner after inspecting the site here today.

The Education Department today announced the list of 187 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs), who were promoted as lecturers after a gap of 22 years. A total of 13 contractual teachers, including three fine arts, two physics and nine English teachers, were relived form their duties without any prior notice.

The district police has registered separate cases against two fake travel agents for duping their clients of worth lakhs of rupees on the pretext of sending them abroad. Neither the agents returned the money nor send them abroad.

17 colonisers booked
Fatehgarh Sahib, April 17
The district police has registered FIRs against 17 colonisers for carving out plots and selling them in an unauthorised manner by violating the PUDA norms. These cases have been registered under Section 36(1), 36(3) of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act and Section 420 of the IPC on the complaint of PUDA JE, Patiala.

The UT police today filed a chargesheet in court in connection with the theft of valuables worth Rs 18 lakh from Hotel Park Plaza in February this year. The police has filed a chargesheet against Ramesh Bhanaji Chhag and his accomplice Jayesh R Sejpal is still on the run.

Property dealer held for attack on man, daughter
Chandigarh, April 17
A week after man and his daughter were brutally attacked at their residence in a society in Sector 50, the police today arrested the accused property dealer Pankaj Partap Singh in the attempt to murder case. The accused was evading arrest all these days. He was arrested from Sector 43 bus stand today.

17 more vehicles recovered from thieves
Chandigarh, April 17
The number of stolen vehicles recovered by the crime branch of the UT police after a gang of auto thieves was busted earlier this month has reached 35. Of the 18 vehicles which were recovered earlier, the police had managed to trace owners of only eight of these.

Woman held in murder case
Mohali, April 17
The sleuths of Punjab State Crime Cell today arrested a woman, involved in a murder case at Amritsar, here today. The accused, identified as Gurnam Kaur from Bachchiwind Lopuke village, Amritsar, was wanted for the murder of her daughter-in-law.

Man loses Rs 82,000
Chandigarh, April 17
In another incident of card cloning, K Jagdishwar Singh resident of Sector 36-A, holder of HSBC credit card reported to the police that he had been defrauded of Rs 45,500, Rs 230 and Rs 36,650 on April 10 through card cloning. K Jagdishwar Singh, working with Bhakra Beas Management Board claimed that in all Rs 82,380 had been withdrawn from his account.

P’kula youth attacked with knife

A 23-year-old resident of Sector 19 suffered serious injuries when he was allegedly stabbed by his wife’s relatives near the Baltana-Panchkula border here this morning. The victim, Alle Nadi, alias Aalam, had married a girl from a different community against wishes of her family, a year back.

A body of 30-year-old man was found under mysterious circumstances at a park in Haryana Panchayat Bhawan in Sector 28 today morning. The deceased has been identified as Baljit Singh.

A woman, who was injured after being hit by a truck in Mani Majra on April 6, succumbed to her injuries here on Sunday. The victim was identified as Bitoli Devi, a resident of Mani Majra. The police soruces said that Bitoli was injured after carats fell on her head from a truck No. (HR-37D-7319).
