Third front candidate's name missing from list

Haridwar, April 14
Third front leaders have alleged a political conspiracy behind the episode of its candidate Veena Shastri’s name being omitted from voters' list in this civic election.

Veena Shastri was the unanimous choice of third front parties for Mayor's post, that included Rashtriya Krantikari Manch, Aam Aadmi Party, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, Uttarakhand Raksha Morcha, Communist Party of India and CPM.

But prior to filing nomination process it came to light that Veena Shastri’s name was missing from voters' list that barred her as per Election Commission norms from contesting the election.

In fact Veena Shastri, who is secretary of the managing committee of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya Sati Kund, Kankhal, had contested the previous municipal committee chairperson's election as Independent candidate and had gained second position.

She had given a tough fight to the eventual winner Kamal Johra of BJP while Congress candidate lagged behind her.

Former legislator and founder of Rashtriya Krantikari Manch Ambrish Kumar today lashed out at BJP and Congress for conspiring in the name missing episode of Shastri.

Ambrish said that it was quite shocking that a resident who had contested the last mayoral election, had her own house in the city and had cast her vote in Lok Sabha Assembly election did not have her name in the civic election.

''We complained to the district election office but no satisfactory response was given. It seems there is a hidden conspiracy involving political parties and administration in this regard, as Veena Shastri was the front-runner this time,”said Kumar.

Uttarakhand Kranti Dal central secretary labour cell Uday Ram Semwal said that UKD was also considering giving support to third front candidate Shastri, owing to her clean, honest, intellectual image.

He lamented that due to a mistake by administrative employees, people of Haridwar will not be having a good choice in the name of Shastri as Mayor candidate.

Aam Aadmi party JP Baluni also pointed towards a political conspiracy in this regard, urging Election Commission of India to look into this aspect.

''It is a grave mistake from administrative side that needs to be looked upon. There is a strategic conspiracy to remove my name from voters' list as opponents feared the third front and like-minded regional parties will back me,'' said Veena Shastri.

Pithoragarh, April 14
Former Cabinet Minister and BJP leader Prakash Pant and present Congress MLA from Pithoragarh Assembly constituency have come again face to face after almost one year, as Pant has taken over as main campaigner for BJP candidate in the Pithoragarh urban body election. His arch rival and Congress MLA from the area Mayukh Singh Mahar is the main campaigner for Congress candidate Jagat Singh Khati.

Pant on Sunday came out in Pithoragarh town to campaign for Rajendra Singh Rawat, the BJP candidate for Pithoragarh urban body chairman, and participated in a door-to-door campaign in various localities of the Palika areas. ''While Pant took over as the main campaigner for the party candidate in Pithoragarh town, he also inaugurated the BJP office at Gangolihat and is likely to reach Didihat to woo voters in favour of the party,'' said a senior BJP leader.

On other hand, Congress MLA Mayukh Singh Mahar, along with party candidate Jagat Singh Khati, and other senior Congress leaders visited voters in the main market and also planned to visit adjoining colonies under the Palika area. ''Mahar made people remember the tenure of former Palika chairman Jagat Singh Khati and urged the people to recall him,'' said Mahender Singh Lunthi, Congress president of the district.

Besides two main contenders for the post of Nagar Palika chairman, other candidates from several parties also started their campaign in the town. Among them were former chairman of Palika Jag Jiwan Singh Kanyal, Aam Adami Party candidate Shamsher Singh Mahar and BSP candidate Kailash Chandra Pant.

In Lohaghat town area, the candidates have started campaigning in their favour. Independent candidate and BJP rebel Lata Varma opened her election office today in Lohaghat market and started campaigning. ''I, along with my wife, have resigned from the primary membership of BJP after my wife was denied the ticket from the party. She has decided to contest as an Independent,'' said Govind Lal Verma, husband of Lata Verma.

Candidates have begun a poster campaign on walls of private and government property in Tanakpur town, while the administration started a campaign to remove the posters. ''As the moral code of conduct has come into force, no candidate can post posters or pamphlets on others' property without permission,'' said Jaswant Singh, SDM of Tanakpur subdivision in Champawat district.

Champawat town, which is going to vote for Nagar Palika Parishad, as their urban body has been upgraded this time, is witnessing door-to-door campaigning by both BJP and Congress candidates. Mussoorie MLA opens BJP election office
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, April 14
Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi and candidate for the post of MC president OP Uniyal inaugurated the BJP election office in a hotel near Gandhi Chowk here today.

MLA Joshi said BJP candidate Uniyal would emerge victorious in the election.

Ganesh Joshi accused the Congress of conspiring against Uniyal to cancel the latter's nomination papers.

He said by using such nefarious means, the Congress had accepted its defeat as people had already made up their mind to bring the BJP back to power in the Municipal Council.

He also refuted the claims that the BJP was a divided house and some workers would not work sincerely for the party. Joshi said on the contrary, every party worker would work to ensure the victory of the party in the MC elections.

Joshi said he, along with OP Uniyal, would try to solve the problems of housing, parking etc in the next tenure of the council.

He claimed that people would give a befitting reply to the Congress in these elections.

Uniyal said: "The Congress is surprised at development works done by him and is unable to digest his popularity among the poor who treat him not as the MC president but a friend."

Uniyal said the rich had many friends but he had emerged as a true friend of the poor who would come out in large numbers to cast vote in his favour.

President of the local unit of the party Roop Singh Kathait, senior BJP leader RN Mathur, Madan Mohan Sharma, Vijay Ramola, Rakesh, DP Panwar, Ashutosh Kothari, Sunil Raturi, RD Naithani and others were present on the occasion.

Returning officer accepts papers of OP Uniyal
But directs Mussoorie circle officer to register an FIR against him for hiding facts
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, April 14
SDM-cum-returning officer NS Dangi accepted the nomination papers of OP Uniyal, BJP candidate for the post of Municipal Council president, during a scrutiny exercise conducted yesterday.

Raising an objection to his candidature, Independent candidate Pradeep Bhandari had alleging that Uniyal had hidden facts about his second wife and furnished wrong details about his educational qualification in his nomination papers and demanded the cancellation of the BJP candidate's papers.

However, the returning officer, after scrutinising the records, directed the Mussoorie circle officer to register an FIR, prima facie, against OP Uniyal for hiding facts.

After getting a temporary relief, Uniyal said it was a victory for him as his papers had been accepted by the returning officer and now the people of the town would give a befitting reply to his detractor, who tried hard to get his ticket cancelled but failed miserably. On the registration of a case against him, Uniyal said he would contest the claims in court.

On the other hand, Bhandari alleged that the returning officer had taken this decision under some pressure or after taking a graft. He said he would file a complaint to the higher authorities.

Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi claimed that Uniyal would emerge victorious in the MC election.

Senior BJP leaders are of the view that the entire exercise had been done to stop Uniyal from contesting the election.

Meanwhile, the returning officer has cancelled the papers of Asif Shiraj, Independent candidate, as he was found underage while two other candidates for ward members, Shah Jhan and Madhuri, have been disqualified for having three children after 2002.
