Prisoner hangs himself to death in Central Jail
Balwant Garg/TNS

Faridkot, April 8
While a prisoner ended his life by hanging himself in the hospital of the Central Jail, Faridkot, today in the morning, another jail inmate, a woman, attempted to commit suicide but was saved.

The deceased, 40-year-old Manjit Singh, a resident of Kauni village of Muktsar, was serving a four-year jail term after he was held guilty by a court on February 20 this year for the offence of possessing and printing counterfeit currency.

PK Garg, jail superintendent, said Manjit Singh's body was found hanging in the jail hospital in the morning today.

In another incident, Tarsem Kaur, an undertrial in an NDPS Act case, attempted to commit suicide in the jail on Sunday evening. She was saved and a criminal case under Section 309 of the IPC (attempt to suicide) was registered against her, said Garg.

Suicide by prisoners in Faridkot jail has witnessed a sharp increase in the last two years after a new and modern Central Jail was constructed here. In April last year, a 35-year-old undertrial, Lakhwinder Singh, committed suicide by hanging himself on the jail premises. He was in the jail for the offence of killing his wife.

On July 24, 2012, a 40-year-old prisoner, undergoing life imprisonment in a murder case, ended his life by hanging himself. Hoshiar Singh, the prisoner, had earlier made a futile attempt to kill himself by ramming his head into the iron bars of the jail.

Pre-trial detainees tend to have a higher rate of suicide than the other inmates in Faridkot jail and most of the suicides have occurred in the morning. While there is no mental health service for the jail inmates, there are common complaints of many inmates undergoing severe despondency and dejection after their arrest and conviction.

Sources in the jail revealed that due to inadequate security staff in the jail, no one noticed when these prisoners were attempting to commit suicide.

Muktsar, April 8
Twelve days have passed since the PSEB class X English paper was leaked on March 24, but the probe seems to be heading nowhere so far.

The police claims that an inquiry has been marked to a DSP rank officer but it has not been able to clarify whether any official of the education department was involved or not.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Muktsar, Surjit Singh said, "Some officials of the education department or the Board might be involved because it would not have been possible without this. But so far, we don't have any proof in this regard. We have asked the officials of the education department, who had lodged the complaint, to produce the packets of question paper and inform how many bundles were opened before the start of the examination. A list of officials in whose possession the question papers were has also been asked for."

District Education Officer Devinder Kumar Rajouria said, "We have lodged a complaint with the police which is investigating the matter."

The PSEB class X English paper was leaked just a day before the exam and the DEO was informed about the availability of the paper at some photostat shops for Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000.

After conducting the preliminary investigations, the DEO had informed the senior officials who changed the question paper.
