Govt to shift LPG subsidy to DBT platform
New Delhi, April 6
The government is moving to shift the cooking gas subsidy on the Aadhaar-based Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) programme in which the subsidy amount will go into the bank account of the consumer. Addressing a press conference, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said today that he would meet Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily in the next couple of days to work out the details.

HC stays execution of Sonepat rape convict Dharam Pal
Chandigarh, April 6
Dharam Pal has escaped the gallows, at least for the time being. Four days after the President rejected his mercy petition filed way back in 1999 in a murder case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today stayed his execution. One of the grounds taken by Dharam Pal in his petition filed before the high court was that the Supreme Court was already “seized of the matter”.
Convicted of rape, Dharam Pal had later murdered five members of the victim’s family while out on parole in 1993

No pilferage, 2 Hisar villages get power boost

It’s ‘power happy’ times for Chirod and Singhran villages of Hisar. The twin villages have been rewarded by the Haryana Government for curtailing power thefts and would now get supply on urban mode for 22- 24 hours a day. Deepender Singh Hooda, Rohtak MP, inaugurated the new system of power supply at Chirod village on Saturday.

Thane building collapse death toll reaches 72; two builders arrested
Mumbai, April 6
The police today arrested Jameel Qureshi and Salim Shaikh, the two builders responsible for constructing the building which collapsed on Thursday evening killing 72 persons. The police said while Shaikh was arrested from Uttar Pradesh, Qureshi was picked up from a relative’s house in Thane where he was hiding since the building came down. According to police and fire brigade officials, rescue work has been completed with 72 bodies being recovered from the crash site. (Details on Nation page)
