Golf Club suspends two members
Chandigarh, April 6
Former captain of the Chandigarh Golf Club SS Lehl and Lieut-Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd) were today put under suspension for one year each and MLA from Punjab, Randeep Singh Nabha, for two-and-a-half months from the club membership after an inquiry indicted the trio for the brawl in the club that took place on February 16 this year.

Jyoti Punjab MLA’s visiting card found in Jyoti’s purse
Panchkula, April 6
In what can prove to be a trouble for another MLA in the Jyoti murder case, Punjab MLA Charanjit Singh Channi's visiting card was found in Jyoti's purse. The Panchkula police has attached a copy of the visiting card to the chargesheet filed in the court. Channi is the MLA from Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district of Punjab.

Elante mall spends Rs 3 lakh daily to light up its premises
A mini-sub station at Elante Mall lies non-functional. Chandigarh, April 6
The biggest mall of the region, Elante Mall, which recently started functioning in the city, is daily spending about Rs 3 lakh on the purchase of diesel to run power generator sets round the clock. The UT Administration is yet to make arrangements for providing power supply to the mall.

Local Chartered Accountant (CA) Yogesh Gera from Aaryaa & Associates has been nominated to the Professional Development Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, New Delhi. Fire officials try to douse the flames on the top floor of a showroom at Sector 22 D in Chandigarh on Saturday. Chandigarh, April 6
A major fire broke out at a handloom showroom in Sector 22-D today morning. The incident took place at the top floor of showroom No. 3031-32. Goods and materials worth Rs 50 lakh were destroyed in the fire. However, no casualty was reported as the showroom and other shops in the market were not opened when the incident took place.

86 per cent of worldwide cases in India
Chandigarh, April 6
A “Keep Educating Yourself” (KEY) programme on prevention of cancer of cervix and contraception was conducted by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, today. It was held under the aegis of Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Societies of India. About 180 delegates from Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh attended this programme.

The PGIMER has removed a note displayed inside the Emergency Medical OPD, which stated that injection dopamine, a life-saving drug, should be arranged from chemist shop and not to be provided free two days after Chandigarh Tribune highlighted it in these columns.

140 encroachers issued challans

In a special anti-encroachment drive, the enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation today removed encroachments from various markets of the city. MC staff issued challans to 140 violators.

Traffic cops challan 232 violators
Chandigarh, April 6
The UT traffic police, during a special drive against overspeeding of vehicles and black films on windowpanes, issued 232 challans. Police officials said five nakas for overspeeding and two nakas for black films were laid at different roads of the city between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm.

196 conferred degrees at Indian School of Business
Mohali, April 6
The Indian School of Business (ISB) today hosted the first graduation day on its Mohali campus. As many as 196 enthusiastic students from the postgraduate programme in management of the class of 2013 passed out from the business school. Kishore Mahbubani, Dean and Professor in the Practice of Public Policy, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore was the chief guest on the occasion. He awarded the certificates to the students.

16-year-old girl commits suicide

Afraid of the failure in the Class X, a 16-year-old girl student today committed suicide in Dharampur adjacent to Kalka. According to information available, the deceased was identified as Yasmin. She had taken Class X examination recently. But she was afraid of her failure.

Gang of robbers busted
Dera Bassi, April 6
The Lalru police has foiled an attempt to robbery by arresting a gang of robbers near Gholu Majra village on Friday evening. As per information, the police raided a gang of robbers, when they were making plan to rob a petrol pump. The police arrested two of the accused while three others fled from the spot after seeing the police party.

Anmol Rattan Sidhu elected HC Bar Assn president

Senior advocate Anmol Rattan Sidhu was elected as the president of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association yesterday evening. Sidhu defeated rivals Harpreet Singh Brar and Raj Kumar Gupta. He was elected as the Bar Association president for the third time.

A local court today issued summons to Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi in response to a petition filed by city-based lawyer Arvind Thakur objecting to “inflammatory remarks” passed by Gandhi about the natives of Uttar Pradesh.

A local court today acquitted a person accused of murdering his sister here. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge acquitted Gurbachan Singh of the charge of murdering his sister, Bhinder Kaur.

Appeal dismissed
Chandigarh, April 6
A local court today dismissed an appeal filed by Natasha Devgan, a resident of Sector 35, for the cancellation of the order by a magistrate court issued last year sentencing her to 15-month imprisonment for causing death due to negligence. The case dates back to December 2005, when a five-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a car driven by Natasha. — TNS

Auto-rickshaw driver arrested for teasing schoolgirls
Chandigarh, April 6
An auto-rickshaw driver was arrested for eve-teasing and passing lewd remarks at girl students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Sector 20. One of the girl students had dropped a complaint in the complaint box of the school. Later, the school reported the matter to the police.

Woman held for cheating, misguiding court
Mohali, April 6
The police today arrested a woman for cheating and misguiding the court by producing fake metric certificate of her son, also an accused in the cheating case. The accused, Rajinder Kaur, had produced the metric certificate of her son, Jandphulwinder Singh, to declare him minor during his trial of cheating a Kharar-based Rajwinder Singh’s family.

Youth held for eve-teasing
Panchkula, April 6
In yet another case of eve-teasing, a youth allegedly stopped his car in front of a girl at Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 4, and hurled comments on her. Later, it was found that the youth was drunk.

Man held guilty of abducting minor

A local court today held a 19-year-old man guilty of abducting a girl (12) with an intention to marry her.

DAV-10 clinch title
Chandigarh, April 6
The cricket team of DAV College, Sector 10, has won the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Final by defeating Karachi University at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo (Sri Lanka), this evening. In a high-pitched affair, the winning team beat their rivals by 49 runs.

Twentyfour-year-old Sanam Singh has made the city proud by winning the Davis Cup tie against Indonesia on Saturday. Pairing up with veteran Leander Paes, Sanam, a CLTA product, recorded a dominating 6-2 6-1 6-4 win over David Agung Susant and Elbert Sie in just 90 minutes. Sanam served and reurned from baseline with remarkable ease to clinch the tie in their favour.

Trials for city b’ball team

The Chandigarh Basketball Association will conduct trials to select the city’s basketball team at New Public School, Sector 18 at 5.30pm on April 7. The team will take part in the upcoming first 3x3 National Basketball Championship to be held at Delhi on April 10 and 11.
