Six supporters of former Uttar Pradesh minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) strongman Nasemuddin Siddiqui were today arrested by the Dehradun police for allegedly attacking ABVP leader Jitender Singh Moni at the residence of former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank here.

According to police officials, Moni had a tiff with some persons when their vehicles collided in Dilaram Bazaar. After a heated exchange of words, Moni drove towards the Cantt area. He was followed by the occupants of the other vehicle. The occupants, who were reportedly close relatives and supporters of Siddiqui, tried to overtake him. Sensing danger, Moni fled and took refuge in the residence of former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank near Raj Bhavan.

However, the supporters of the BSP leader went to his residence and caught hold of one of the associates of Moni and beat him up. They also looked out for Moni, who had hidden himself in the building. The intruders, who were reportedly armed, had a tiff with the staff of the former Chief Minister. On sensing trouble, they escaped from the scene. The staff of the former Chief Minister noted down the vehicle number of the intruders and informed the police. The Dehradun police later arrested six of them from the city. These persons had come to Dehradun from Uttar Pradesh to participate in a family function of a close relative of Siddiqui.

Tribune News Service

Dehradun, March 30
Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, along with Union Water Resource Minister Harish Rawat, today flagged off 90 ambulances (Kushiyaon Ki Sawari) to be deployed for drop-back facilities in different parts of the state under the Janani Shishu Surakasha Karyakaram.

Speaking on the occasion, Bahuguna said Khushiyon Ki Sawari vans would be able to drop mother and child from hospital to home. “Due to the hilly terrain, travelling from one area to another becomes difficult, especially for patients who need immediate care. Now, we have pressed into service 90 ambulances that will be used exclusively to ferry expectant mothers to the hospital and then drop mother and child back home with the permission of the hospital at free of cost,” said Bahuguna.

He said the government had doubled the budget for improving medical and health facilities in the state, “A total of Rs 723 crore has been earmarked for the state for this financial year. The Central Government, too, has released Rs 82 crore for improving the health facilities in the state,” said Bahuguna.

On the other hand, the Union Water Resource Minister called upon the state government to initiate efforts in tiding over manpower crisis. “We are still not able to run our hospitals in the remote areas of the state in the absence of doctors. We need to address this problem seriously,” he said. He also called for strengthening and improving paramedical facilities.

Health Minister Surinder Singh Negi said the efforts of Union minister Harish Rawat and Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna had yielded results as on their insistence, the Central Government has decided to give grant in the ratio of 90:10 (Centre-state share) to Uttarakhand for improving and upgrading medical and health facilities in the state.

On the other hand, Director, National Rural Health Mission, Piyush Singh said that the drop-back facility would encourage institutional delivery and also improve the maternal mortality and child mortality ratio.

Out of the 90 vans, seven would be deployed in Dehradun district, six in Haridwar district, seven in Pauri, three in Rudraprayag, six in Chamoli, five in Tehri, four in Uttarkashi, eight in Udham Singh Nagar, four in Champawat, six in Nainital , seven in Pithoragrh, six in Almora and three in Bageshwar district.

UP nigam to build medical colleges in Almora, Dehradun
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, March 30
The Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN) has got the construction projects of Dehradun and Almora medical colleges. Earlier, the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) had been selected for these projects.

However, the delay by the NBCC in presenting a detailed project report (DPR) on both projects forced the Department of Medical Education to award these projects to the UPRNN.

“The NBCC failed to submit the DPR in time, though the officials continued to maintain that they would deliver good work. We have already set the 2014 deadline for starting the MBBS course and cannot afford to be complacent,” said a senior official.

The UPRNN was not in the reckoning after it was dumped by former Chief Minister BC Khanduri, who was keen on promoting the construction agency based in the state. Along with the state-based firm, the government had also decided to rope in national agencies to improve the quality. But soon enough, the UPRNN made a comeback within months of the Bahuguna-led Congress government coming to power.

Now the NBCC is only left with the construction of five nursing colleges proposed under the 13th Finance Commission.

Dehradun, March 30
Workers of the Aam Aadmi Party today staged a protest in front of the Dehradun SSP's office against the alleged police inaction in an attempt by some anti-social elements to outrage the modesty of a class XI girl.

Members of the party alleged that the police had failed to arrest one of the accused. According to party members, two miscreants, reportedly related to a BJP councillor, allegedly stopped a girl and tore her clothes in an attempt to kidnap her.

The workers alleged that the police showed leniency by registering a case under Sections 354, 427,505 of the IPC. It arrested one of the accused but failed to nab the other culprit.

They alleged that as the accused had got bail, pressure was being exerted on the the girl's family to withdraw the case. The workers demanded that if prompt action against the culprits was not taken immediately, they would launch an agitation.

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Tariq Anwar has said that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will always remain with the UPA at the Centre, as it is a natural political partner of the party. He said this while talking to the mediapersons in Nainital last evening.

Addressing scientists and farmers at National Coldwater Fisheries Research Centre at Bhimtal, Anwar appealed to the scientists that their research should be beneficial to the farmers. “We can strengthen agriculture in the villages only after introducing professions like fisheries in it,” said Anwar.
