Damaged pools at Kempty Falls await repairs
Mussoorie, March 20 Heavy overnight rain in August last year had damaged a patch of the Mussoorie-Kempty-Yamnotri road and three swimming pools at famous Kempty Falls, nearly 13 km from Mussoorie. Three restaurants were also damaged in the landslide. Even after clear directions from Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna the main swimming pool number 1 at Kempty Falls that suffered massive damage is yet to be repaired. The Public Works Department and the local zila panchayat had built this swimming pool under the beautification scheme of the Tourism Department by spending around Rs
4.24 crore. Eketa, a student from Delhi, who was visiting the site for the first time, said the sight of the damaged pools was disappointing. They had to cross natural rocks in order to reach the pools at Kempty Falls. Preeti, a tourist from Bihar, said, “We have come from Bihar to enjoy our holidays. We wanted to take a bath in the falls but after seeing the poor condition of the pools there we changed our mind.” Rimpi, another tourist from Delhi, told The Tribune that the area was strewn with filth and polythene bags, leaving a scar on the face of a beautiful tourist destination. She said there was no check on the quality of food at the restaurants and most of the restaurant owners were fleecing hapless tourists by charging exorbitant prices for food items. The tourists also resented the absence of adequate changing room facility in the area. Sansar Singh, a local shopkeeper, said due to the damaged condition of the pools tourists were returning without spending time there. This was affecting their sales considerably. He added if repair work was not done at the earliest, there would be a sharp fall in the number of tourists this season. Shopkeepers said boulders falling from hills posed a threat to their properties and lives but the officials concerned were keeping mum on the issue despite several reminders. The Apar Mukhya Adhikari of the zila panchayat blamed the PWD for the pathetic condition of the pools. He said the PWD had been given a no objection certificate to carry out repair work on the pool number 1, but it had failed to initiate any action. Meanwhile, repair work on two other pools was in progress and would be completed this week. Around 22 lakh tourists visit Kempty Falls every year and if the site is not restored soon the inflow of tourists could fall drastically, resulting in loss of revenue to the government. |
