Tihar inmate found hanging
New Delhi, March 14 Jail authorities said as a consequence of the two incidents, they will direct their guards to be more vigilant. “We will soon conduct clinical psychological tests of all the inmates lodged in the nine jails of Tihar, who have stayed inside for more than a year,” said sources in the jail. There are about 5,000 such inmates. The woman who was found hanging today is named Reshma. She had been lodged in jail number six—for women only—since November 2011. Jail officials claimed that a woman guard saw Reshma hanging inside her cell at about 3 pm. The guard informed her superiors, including the jail superintendent. “From 12 pm to 3 pm every day, the inmates are locked inside their cells. The incident might have taken place during this time. The other two inmates lodged with her were somewhere else,” said jail sources. Reshma’s body has been preserved at the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital in west Delhi. The jail authorities have informed her family, who live in West Bengal. A postmortem will be conducted tomorrow to ascertain the cause of her death. Jail officials presently suspect that she committed suicide. |
Water meant for residents diverted to hotels: BJP
New Delhi, March 14 The matter was raised on the second day of the Budget session by Dharam Dev Solanki, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Palam. He alleged that supply to his area was intentionally interrupted by the government to feed various guesthouses in Palam and around the airport which are believed to be owned by big corporate houses. “Our area which includes Dwarka has not been supplied filtered water in the past 10 years. We wrote several letters to the Chief Minister and also held demonstrations. Our area has proper water connections and pipelines, but there is no water to release through them,” said Solank, adding that the residents are dependent on water tankers. He demanded that the government should conduct an independent inquiry into the matter. “Why are you hesitating from initiating an inquiry, if nothing is wrong on your part,” said Solanki. Suggesting that there is already a committee constituted by the Delhi Jal Board to look into the matter, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the complaints can be forwarded to it for further investigation. Solanki’s allegations were followed by an uproar from other BJP members of the House which compelled Speaker Yoganand Shastri to adjourn the meeting for 40 minutes. Scarcity of water in the city remained the core issue even after the House assembled again. However, while interacting with the media, Dikshit accepted that there are areas in Delhi where water is still a major problem. “We accept that there are underground reservoirs (UGRs) which are not yet functional but we will ensure that water tanks reach everyone until the issue is resolved,” she said. Other issues raised by the Opposition included hike in power price, bad roads and also demand for the Speaker’s resignation. |

New Delhi, March 14 The Additional Commissioner of Police (Southwest District) said a case in this regard has been registered at the Dwarka (South) police station. “The accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody,” he added. He and other police officers close to the investigation did not confirm when the incident occurred and the date when the case was registered. They didn’t disclose the name of the accused either. Sources said the accused had developed a physical relationship with the victim after he promised to marry her. |

New Delhi, March 14 Six of them are likely to be discharged tomorrow morning, said Dr R Mittal, medical superintendent of the hospital today. He said, “These students from a Kathak Kendra had come with complaints of vomiting and diarrohea. Six of the students are now stable while the seventh one is still under observation in the ICU.” Further, the samples of food have been collected for examination by an expert team of the lab here, the MS said. It appears to be a case of food poisoning. |
