Pitampura residents protest dirty water supply
New Delhi, March 6 Residents of Pitampura Police Line protested against the Jal board, Public Works Department and the District Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the supply of dirty water in the area for over a month now. "We have written applications to the authorities, including the DCP, SHO Mangolpuri and the Joint CP, but no action has been taken as of now. It's been over a month since we have been getting dirty water in our houses," said Naresh Devi, president of a Resident Welfare Association. "The problem has occurred due to the attachment of gutter pipelines with the water line. Many children have been taken ill in the locality. Skin problems and stomach upsets are quite common," Devi added. The protestors blocked Ring Road at Pitampura Police Line and continued their protest this morning. Finally, the DCP reached the spot and assured them that he would instruct the staff to ensure the supply of clean water," said Deepika Deshwal, a former member of the Delhi University Students' Union. The officials also made arrangements for water tankers, but the residents boycotted them as they wanted a permanent solution. |

Annashree Yojna fails to achieve target
New Delhi, March 6 With an aim to bring at least two lakh beneficiaries under the Annashree Yojna, the government has managed to introduce around 30,000 beneficiaries in the scheme in the past two months. However, at the time of the launch of the scheme on December, the state government had announced to benefit two lakhs families in current financial year. Also, the government had identified five lakhs families on the basis of scientific parameters through a survey conducted by the Mission Convergence. Under the scheme, an amount support of Rs 600 per month is transferred in the Aadhar-linked bank account of the beneficiary to supplement food and other essential commodities of the family. With people facing problems in opening bank accounts in the absence of guaranter and other documents, according to senior government officials, the issuance of Aadhar has become a challenge. "Problems are being faced in verification of beneficiaries. And we cannot extend the scheme without first making their Aadhar cards," said a senior government official. "Till the time we succeed in issuing Aadhar cards to all the eligible people they cannot be made to avail themselves the benefits of the scheme," said a senior official. He said that people are facing problems in opening bank accounts in the absence of guaranter and other documents. The Delhi government had also announced to implement four out of nine schemes on Aadhar Enabled Direct Cash Transfer mode in its two districts - northwest and northeast - on January 1, with a promise to put all nine centrally sponsored schemes by March 2013. However, they also could not be launched due to same reason. The Annashree Yojna has been aimed to cover those poor families which are left out of the Public Distribution System because of the numerical cap on number of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The upper limit of the BPL households in respect of Delhi has been fixed by the Planning Commission as 4.09 lakh. Whereas, total number of BPL families in Delhi is 7.5 lakh. |
