Govt okays plying of two-wheelers in Paltan Bazaar
Traders call off bandh on Friday
Shops opened, business continues as usual

Tribune News Service

Dehradun, March 7
The traders of Paltan Bazar are jubilant over the decision of the state government to allow movement of two-wheelers in Paltan Bazaar from 10 to 3 in the day. The traders' unions have now cancelled their joint decision to observe a bandh tomorrow, and also opened their shops in the afternoon today.

The news regarding the state government's decision was broken to the traders by Saket Bahuguna, son of the Chief Minister, at Clock Tower. He showed them a letter of the Chief Minister in this regard.

When the traders at Clock Tower were clapping and cheering the decision around 2 in the afternoon, a group of union leaders was meeting SSP Kewal Khurana in his office on the matter. Khurana had refused to relax the ban on two-wheelers but also kept the doors of dialogue open by offering them a meeting with the District Magistrate and himself in three to four days.

The traders of Paltan Bazaar had intensified their protest in support of their demand over resumption of plying of two-wheelers in the market after a trader, Chander Shekhar Kohli, died of heart attack in his shop yesterday afternoon. The traders blamed the police for not allowing an ambulance inside the market, which led to his death, whereas the police said the delay was on the part of the ambulance.

The leaders of various trade associations welcomed the decision of the state government. President of Doon Traders' Association Vipin Nagliya said: “All the trader communities thank the state government over it's decision to resume movement of two-wheelers. The business of Paltan Bazaar had got immensely affected due to the ban, whilst our other competitors in adjoining markets made profits on account of a slump in our business.”

President of State Doon Trade Association Umesh Aggarwal thanked the state government for showing sensitivity towards the grievances of traders in the matter and said; “The traders are demanding the extension of limit of movement of two-wheelers up to 4. Saket Bahuguna has given us an assurance us in this connection."

Reacting on this sudden turnaround, SSP said: “The police will comply with the state government order about resumption of two-wheelers in Paltan Bazaar and now deploy more policemen in the market to regulate traffic and crowd.”

In the morning, the traders could be seen throwing their weight around by making inflammatory speeches against the police and throwing police barricades away. Some traders dragged barricades to long distances. CO, city, Mamta Bohra, directed the policemen to bring these back. A minor scuffle took place on this issue. A trade leader also tried to argue with Mamta Bohra when she asked him to stand at a distance from her. Other policemen pacified him with difficulty. The dharna and speeches continued till 1.30, after which they the traders went to meet the SSP. However, the energy and anger perceptible in traders yesterday was missing today.

Band Stand at Library Chowk to be beautified
Politics over taking credit for the project surfaces during the stone-laying function
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, March 7
Acceding to the long-standing demand of residents, Urban Development Minister Preetam Singh Panwar laid the foundation stone of the widening and beautification project of Band Stand at Library Chowk here today.

The land for the project has been provided by the Mussoorie Municipal Council and will be executed by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA). Under the project, the existing Band Stand and the statue of Mahatma Gandhi will be relocated without changing its present status. Toilets fitted with modern amenities are also proposed in the project.

Meanwhile, former Mussoorie MLA Jot Singh Gunsola and present BJP MLA from Mussoorie Ganesh Joshi entered into a verbal duel with each other over taking credit for the sanctioning of the project.

Gunsola also raised the issue of ignoring Municipal Council chief OP Uniyal by not inviting him to the function. Gunsola said it was unfortunate that the council chief and ward members, who had provided land for the project, were not invited to the function today.

Gunsola claimed that it was he who had initiated the widening of the project during his tenure as MLA Mussoorie. But Joshi was taking credit for it unnecessarily." Ganesh Joshi is trying to spoil the political atmosphere of the town which will not be tolerated at any cost," added Gunsola.

MLA Joshi counter alleged that former MLA Gunsola was raking the issue in sheer frustration as he had been unable to streamline the project during his tenure. Joshi alleged that Gunsola had also failed to bring development projects in the town during his tenure and it was for this reason the people rejected him in the Assembly elections. On the other hand, Panwar said the project was for the public irrespective of any political consideration and public representatives should not throw brickbats at each other.

Vice-Chairman, MDDA, R.Meenakshi Sundaram, while talking to the media, said the project once completed would serve the residents and tourists in a big way. He said several other projects such as housing and parking were in the pipeline along with the project of an eco-park at Hussain Ganj for which the bid had been invited and the tender process was in progress.

Infighting among BJP women leaders to fore
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, March 7
Infighting within the old and new office-bearers in the BJP Women's Wing has come to the fore on the day when party leaders decided to honour women.

While the new group took the centrestage with general secretary of the Women's Wing Anuradha Walia managing the show, president of the Women's Wing Mamata Paladia was completely ignored except when the time when BJP Uttarakhand chief Teerath Singh Rawat was felicitated.

The president's picture was even missing in the hoardings put up at Town Hall where the function took place. "A new group of women leaders has begun to dominate the party and it is these leaders who are being heard. They are in the party on the recommendations of some leader or the other occupying a position. The women leaders, who worked towards strengthening the party, have been completely sidelined," said a former office-bearer.

Some party workers even questioned the criteria adopted by the Women's Wing to honour the women, some of whom were never seen before. "The entire list was prepared by the general secretary and no prior confabulations were held for selecting the women," charged a party worker.

There were lots of gaffes during the entire show, beginning with the spelling mistakes on the list of the women, who were honoured, prominently displayed on the stage. The corrections were made only after the poetess herself pointed out the mistake.

While the function was held to honour women, the office-bearers spent most of the time in honouring the leaders of the main party and applause were reserved for the party chief Teerath Singh Rawat.

Court judgment on writ with regard to MC poll
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, March 7
The High Court today gave it's judgment in response to a writ petition filed on the matter of delimitation with regard to Municipal Corporation election in the state, whereby it was decreed that that Directorate, Census, will have to notify the census of 2011; then the state government will conduct the MC election in accordance with section 32 of Uttar Pardesh Municipal Act 1959, which means dividing each ward of MC equally on the basis of population.

This will be a marathon exercise for Dehradun Municipal Corporation to do so as the MC election is supposed to be held sometime in April. The tenure of present DMC board is coming to an end on May 5.

Councillor Manmohan Singh Dhanai went to High Court after the councillors began blaming BJP government for playing foul in the last MC election, wherein some wards had higher number of voters and some had lesser. The hue and cry was rasised when state government decided not to tamper with the delimitation and conduct the election as per the ward structure of the last election.

The state government had also planned to hold election by the census of 2001, but the Census Directorate did not have the data. Even the same data was missing from the files of DMC Department. At this, Mukhya Nagar Adhikari , Ashok Kumar, had raised his hands, saying he could not complete the task of delimitation in time because the data was not available and the exercise of contacting old employees who are participating in the last MC election could not bring much result.

Mussoorie, March 7
Five women were felicitated on the eve of International Women's Day for their exemplary service for working towards empowerment of women in society in a small function held at a hotel in Mussoorie under the aegis of Parvitya Bigul Santha today.

The chief guest on the occasion, Gauri Saingam, eminent social activist, presented a shawl and citation to Bhavna Barthwal for working towards safeguarding the rights of women. Deveshwari Joshi was honoured for her service towards preserving culture of the state. Late Nalina Rana was honoured for highlighting various social issues such as domestic violence against women. Pramila Rawat was honoured for her political activism and Renu Agarwal for fighting against the dowry system and other social issues related to women.

Women present at the function objected to the proposal of the state government for lowering liquor prices in the state as this decision would lead to increase in violence against women in all forms. The women also said that instead of lowering the prices of liquor, the government should think on the lines of reducing the prices of commodities and LPG gas cylinders, which were affecting the women directly.

The chief guest on the occasion, Gauri Saingam, said that violence against women was on the rise in the country and the violent acts can be reduced only by educating people at an early age. Gender equality education should begin from home.

The former Congress president, Mussoorie, said that the government should work towards passing the 33 per cent reservation Bill in Parliament so that the voice of the women is also heard at the highest political forum in the country.

The women pledged to prevent female foeticide and promote education of the girl child in a big way on the occasion.

Twin sisters to scale Mount Everest
Jotirmay Thapliyal/TNS

Dehradun, March 7
As the nation celebrates International Day for Women, twin sisters from the city Tashi and Nungshi, residents of Sinola in Dehradun, are leaving for Nepal tomorrow on an expedition to Mount Everest. The successful completion of the expedition will also make a world record as no twin sisters have scaled the peak together. The twins, who are just 20-year old, will also be the youngest among feminine gender to do so.

The simple efforts of exposing his daughters to the challenges of mountaineering to develop better understanding of the ‘self’, turned out to be the biggest surprise for Col VS Malik , as his twin daughters, one day in 2009 declared aiming to scale Mt Everest. They had then just passed their class twelfth examinations.

Both Nungshi and Tashi did their school education from Guru Nanak Fifth Centenary School, Mussoorie, and stood as avid participants to sports and adventure activities in the school. After passing their class XII examinations, love for mountaineering made them go for Basic Mountaineering Course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, which was completed in 2010. They did not stop here and went on to successfully undertaken Advance Mountaineering Course from the NIM in 2011. The two had also successfully undergone training from a professional mountaineering trainer and instructor at the NIM with A Grade. They later also completed basic skiing course at the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering, Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, and stood overall second collectively in the course thereby obtaining ‘A’ grade. Their biggest achievement came in the form of successfully scaling Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in Africa, in February 2012 and this inspired them to scale Mount Everest. The expedition to scale the Himalayas formally begins from tomorrow as the twin sisters leave Dehradun for Nepal to take the greatest challenge of their lives in the form of “Mission Twins on Everest 2013”, as the expedition has been identified. “It has been our dream to conquer Mount Everest”, Tashi and Nungshi point out.

Col VS Malik, proud father, is too hopeful of her daughters’ success. “I am very hopeful that Tashi and Nungshi will make Uttarakhand and India proud and will inspire young Indians to exceed their goals”, says Col V S Malik.

Col Ajay Kothiyal, who, some time back, successfully guided the first-ever All-Women Army Mountaineers team to scale Mount Everest, hoped success for the twin sisters. He said the Indian women had always proved their mettle, particulary when it came to adventure and the “Mission Twins on Everest 2013” would add to the glorious list of Indian women success. The two sisters have recently completed Bachelor in Journalism and Mass Communication.
