Colours blend with joy as 3-day rose festival takes off

The much awaited three-day Rose Festival started with a colourful show today. The inauguration ceremony commenced with beating of drums, playing of bands and folk dance performed by the artists from different states. Regional art form was the main attraction of the ceremony.

City doctor is IMA vice-president
Dr Ramneek Singh Bedi was installed as the national vice-president of Indian Medical Association at the 87th National Conference IMACON at Kanyakumari. IMA is the largest association of doctors in the country. He is the second doctor from Chandigarh State to be elevated to this position. He is currently the President of IMA, Chandigarh, for the second year in
succession.

Govt school uniforms
Procurement process made easy

Now each government school will procure free school uniforms for their respective students. After a series of meetings, the UT education department has finalised the required formalities and guidelines to financially empower School Management Committees (SMCs) of each government school to buy free school uniforms for their respective students. In Chandigarh, there are over one-lakh school students from class I to class VIII who are eligible for the purpose of free school uniforms.

Questioning reports of an aircraft collision being narrowly averted at the Chandigarh airport, the Air Force authorities today said that the runway was totally clear of any aircraft when a scheduled flight of IndiGo Airlines was coming in to land.

PU to discontinue MBA (Executive) course

The Panjab University’s University Business School (UBS) has decided to discontinue its MBA (Executive) due to declining number of applications for the course in past few years and also due to lack of availability of sufficient number of eligible candidates. The issue would be tabled before the syndicate in its meeting to be held on February 24.

Poor working of govt hospitals: NHRC issues notice to UT Administrator
New Delhi, February 22
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), taking cognizance of a media report alleging that emergency wards in three city government hospitals were not catering to critical needs of patients, has issued a notice to the UT Administrator.
The report had mentioned three hospitals that were found erring during a check on the night of February 5: the PGIMER, Sector 12; Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16; and Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.
Evasion of vat
Rs 5 lakh recovered, 20 vehicles impounded
Chandigarh, February 23
The round-the-clock mobile nakas of the UT excise department have resulted in the recovery of around Rs 5 lakh in the past three days.
The department has also confiscated around 20 vehicles being used to transport goods without paying the value added tax (VAT).

3 child labourers rescued
Chandigarh, February 22
The anti-human trafficking unit of the UT police raided some shops and dhabas in Sector 9 and rescued three children who were being forcibly made to work.

Chandigarh: A 35-year-old man of Sector 32 was detected positive for swine flu on Friday. The authorities said Tamiflu was available free of cost at all the three government hospitals.

Irregularities: Homoeopathic college faculty approaches PU VC against management

The faculty of Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Sector 26, has approached the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University
(PU) with various alleged irregularities going-on in the college. In a representation made to the VC, the faculty members stated that as per the circular issued by the college management, no staff member could directly or indirectly approach any higher authority against the decision of management.
