House tax: MC faces heat
Chandigarh, February 22
The municipal corporation has to pay for its populist approach of not imposing house tax as the Chandigarh Administration has decided to act tough with it by imposing an embargo on the transfer of land to the civic body. With the Lok Sabha elections due next year, the Congress, which is in power in the MC, is not imposing house tax on city residents despite a number of reminders sent by the UT Administration.

Administration gets choosy over boundary walls

The Chandigarh Administration seems to have adopted a "pick-and-choose" policy by asking the rich and affluent in northern sectors to lower the height of the boundary walls of their houses but sparing government houses.

Monica Goyal’s in-laws charged with murder

The court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today framed charges of murder and abetment to suicide against four accused in the Monica Goyal murder case that took place on October 15 last year.

The much awaited three-day Rose Festival started with a colourful show today. The inauguration ceremony commenced with beating of drums, playing of bands and folk dance performed by the artists from different states. Regional art form was the main attraction of the ceremony.

City doctor is IMA vice-president
Dr Ramneek Singh Bedi was installed as the national vice-president of Indian Medical Association at the 87th National Conference IMACON at Kanyakumari. IMA is the largest association of doctors in the country. He is the second doctor from Chandigarh State to be elevated to this position. He is currently the President of IMA, Chandigarh, for the second year in succession.

Govt school uniforms
Procurement process made easy
Chandigarh, February 22
Now each government school will procure free school uniforms for their respective students. After a series of meetings, the UT education department has finalised the required formalities and guidelines to financially empower School Management Committees (SMCs) of each government school to buy free school uniforms for their respective students. In Chandigarh, there are over one-lakh school students from class I to class VIII who are eligible for the purpose of free school uniforms.

Chandigarh, February 22 Questioning reports of an aircraft collision being narrowly averted at the Chandigarh airport, the Air Force authorities today said that the runway was totally clear of any aircraft when a scheduled flight of IndiGo Airlines was coming in to land.

PU to discontinue MBA (Executive) course

The Panjab University’s University Business School (UBS) has decided to discontinue its MBA (Executive) due to declining number of applications for the course in past few years and also due to lack of availability of sufficient number of eligible candidates. The issue would be tabled before the syndicate in its meeting to be held on February 24.

Poor working of govt hospitals: NHRC issues notice to UT Administrator
New Delhi, February 22
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), taking cognizance of a media report alleging that emergency wards in three city government hospitals were not catering to critical needs of patients, has issued a notice to the UT Administrator. The report had mentioned three hospitals that were found erring during a check on the night of February 5: the PGIMER, Sector 12; Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16; and Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.

Evasion of vat
Rs 5 lakh recovered, 20 vehicles impounded
Chandigarh, February 23
The round-the-clock mobile nakas of the UT excise department have resulted in the recovery of around Rs 5 lakh in the past three days. The department has also confiscated around 20 vehicles being used to transport goods without paying the value added tax (VAT).

3 child labourers rescued
Chandigarh, February 22
The anti-human trafficking unit of the UT police raided some shops and dhabas in Sector 9 and rescued three children who were being forcibly made to work.

One more swine flu case
Chandigarh: A 35-year-old man of Sector 32 was detected positive for swine flu on Friday. The authorities said Tamiflu was available free of cost at all the three government hospitals. — TNS

Irregularities: Homoeopathic college faculty approaches PU VC against management
Chandigarh, February 22
The faculty of Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Sector 26, has approached the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University (PU) with various alleged irregularities going-on in the college. In a representation made to the VC, the faculty members stated that as per the circular issued by the college management, no staff member could directly or indirectly approach any higher authority against the decision of management.

32 law schools to take part in moot court

Mystery over disappearance of a local lawyer, Satwinder Singh, has been deepened with that the police has found the footsteps on the bank of Bhakhra canal at the spot where the missing lawyer's car was found parked on February 17.

22-year-old girl goes missing from Pinjore
Kalka, February 22
A 22-year-old girl went missing under mysterious circumstances from her house in Bitna Colony, Pinjore, here on Thursday. The police said that mother of the victim has lodged a complaint with the Pinjore police station that her daughter has been missing since yesterday, when she (mother) had gone to market from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm. When she returned, she found her daughter missing from home. She repeatedly tried to contact her daughter on phone but in vain.

Two snatchers held in Ambala

The local police has arrested two youths for allegedly snatching a purse of a woman in Sarafa Bazar at Ambala City this evening.

Man gets life term for killing wife
Ambala, February 22
Special judge of Ambala Fast Track Court Vimlesh Tanwar has sentenced life term imprisonment to Gulshan, a resident of Ambala Cantonment, for killing his wife. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the accused.

Companies booked under highway Act
Zirakpur, February 22
Following the complaint of the National Highway Authority of India, the police has registered a case against some companies for having illegal accesses near the Ambala-Chandigarh National Highway.

Thieves target car in Mohali, steal tyres
Mohali, February 22
In another incident of theft of car tyres, thieves targeted a Polo car (PB65N-0165) parked outside the owners’ residence in Sector 69. The thieves took away all the four tyres of the car and left the vehicle on bricks.
The owner of the car, Saby Anand, said he was shocked to see his car on bricks. “It was parked on the pavement in front of my house, along the main road dividing Sector 69 and 70.

Two drug peddlers arrested

The Operation Cell of the Chandigarh Police has recovered around 900 grams of charas from two passengers travelling on a Himachal Roadway bus. The accused, Atma Ram and Sonu Thakur, both belonging to Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh, were frisked at the ISBT-44.

Anya bags top spot in high jump

The annual sports day of the YPS, Mohali, saw students competing for several sporting events including high jump, broad jump, triple jump, 800, 400 and 100 mt under various age groups.
