Confusion rules opening day
Chandigarh, January 28
Vehicles parked haphazardly at the parking lot of the new District Courts Complex, Sector 43; and litigants at the Sector 17 courts complex on Monday. Inadequate publicity regarding the shifting of the district courts from Sector 17 to the new District Courts Complex in Sector 43 has led to confusion among litigants.

Estate Office on demolition mode
Chandigarh, January 28
The enforcement staff of the UT Estate Office today demolished four multi-storeyed houses and sealed another two houses in Charan Singh Colony, Mauli Jagran, this morning. The authorities also pulled down security gates put up by residents in Sector 45. Besides, demolition notices were issued against 34 marla houses in Sector 22.

Six students hurt as bus overturns
Chandigarh, January 28
Six students of Vivek High School, Mohali, had a miraculous escape after a school bus they were travelling in overturned at the Sector 17/9 light point at 8 am today. The students sustained minor injuries and were discharged after treatment at the GMSH, Sector 16.

Setback for UT Admn
Chandigarh, January 28
In a major setback for the UT Administration, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has turned down the request of the UT Administration to lift a ban on land acquisition. The ban was imposed by the MHA. The ministry has asked for the status of the land available with the Administration.

Mohali DC distributes 21 eco-rickshaws
Mohali, January 28
A mega credit camp was organised at the Municipal Bhawan where sanction letters worth Rs 21 lakh were given to beneficiaries by Mohali Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam here today. The DRI (differential rate of interest) credit camp was organised by the Lead Bank office with the active participation of banks in the district.

Mayor puts off F&CC elections
Chandigarh, January 28
City Mayor Subhash Chawla today postponed the MC house meeting and the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) elections to January 30. The elections were to be held on January 29. The Mayor's decision has not gone down well with the opposition parties as they are terming the decision unethical and illegal.

House tax to be on civic body’s agenda
Chandigarh, January 28
Though the city Mayor is against the imposition of house tax, nominated councillors today submitted an application to the Mayor and the MC Commissioner, asking them to table the house tax agenda in the General House scheduled for January 30.

171 units of blood donated
As many as 171 units of blood were donated at the 28th blood donation camp organised by the Canara Bank Officers’ Association, Chandigarh Region. The camp, held to mark Republic Day, was organised in association with the department of transfusion medicine, PGI. During the camp Pragraj Sharma donated blood for the 205th time in his life. The star donor was joined by Atul Kapoor (42nd time) and Gulab Singh (78th time). Members of the association along with their family members from Chandigarh, Ambala, Karnal, Ludhiana, Patiala, Panchkula and Mohali donated blood.

Insurance company penalised for denying mediclaim
Chandigarh, January 28
The New India Assurance Company has been penalised for denying a medical claim and has also been directed to pay Rs 35,000 as compensation. The company had denied claim against tongue cancer operation of the complainant claiming that it was caused due to tobacco chewing.

CTU treads path with caution
Chandigarh, January 28
The scam-hit Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) is treading cautiously while recruiting 150 drivers. The conductor recruitment scam had raised many an eyebrow two years ago. The undertaking has received 3,000 applicants.

Girl forced to live with man who raped her
Panchkula, January 28
Even after the Delhi gang rape case, the Panchkula police has not learnt any lesson. Allegations by a minor girl revealed that policemen forced her to live with an accused who raped her. A 17-year-old resident of Morni alleged that after she was abducted while coming back from school, she was raped by a youth and in connivance with the policemen she was kept hostage.

3 more cases of swine flu surface
Chandigarh, January 28
Three new cases of swine flu were reported in city hospitals today. Of these, one case was reported at the GMCH, Sector 32, while the other two were reported in Haryana.

Swinging into action against illegal constructions along the National Highway, the Public Works Department (PWD) demolished at least six structures, including a liquor vend and three shops, at Balongi village here today morning. The drive passed off peacefully as officials on duty did not witness any protest.

Ludhiana ACP’s bribe case hearing adjourned till Feb 8
Mohali, January 28
In the bribe case against Ludhiana’s Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gurcharan Singh, the local court today adjourned the hearing till February 8. Earlier, the ACP, who has been released on bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was present in the court today.

CBSE introduces web-based software for providing question papers, marking scheme
Chandigarh, January 28
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will not provide question papers and marking scheme on compact disks for the forthcoming written examination of classes IX and X. The CDs that were being sent till the previous examination in the current academic session have been replaced by a web-based software — CBSE Integrated Test Management System (CBSE-ITMS).

A two-week AICTE-sponsored faculty development programme on “Effective Pedagogy in Management Education” began at the Cordia Institute of Business Management, Sanghol, today. ETO’s suicide
Accused sent to judicial custody till February 16
Mohali, January 28
Amandeep Kaur, an accused. A local court today sent all accused, including suspended Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) Amandeep Kaur, in the ETO Ranjit Singh suicide case to judicial remand till February 16. Earlier, Amandeep Kaur, along with the other four accused, constable Harminder Singh, Paramjit Singh, a driver, Rajiv Sood and Rajinder Gopi, both Ludhiana-based transporters, were produced in the court of the Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge (Senior Division) RS Rai, as their 14-day judicial remand came to an end today.

Robbery at PC jewellers
Four accused convicted
Panchkula, January 28
In the infamous PC Jewellers robbery, a local court today convicted four members of the notorious Badri gang. The other four were acquitted by the court. There were nine accused in the case. Rajesh, alias Badri, who was recently killed in an encounter by the police, was the kingpin of the gang.

In the murder of a priest that took place in year 2011 at Shiv temple in Bhareli village, Barwala, the local court today convicted the accused Jagmohan Giri. The quantum of the punishment would be announced on January 31.

Alert residents of Phase IX, Industrial Area, not only foiled a theft attempt in a factory, but also nabbed two thieves red-handed at 10 pm today.

70-yr-old man dies in road accident
Mohali, January 28
An elderly person lost his life after being hit by a truck near Balongi here today. The deceased has been identified as Amol Singh (70), a resident of Phase 5, Industrial Area, here. According to sources, Amol Singh was going to Kharar on his Activa scooter when a speedy truck, which was coming from the Chandigarh side, hit the victim from the rear.

Santosh Trophy
Chaos prevails at camp
Chandigarh, January 28
Making it a sheer mockery, the local Chandigarh Football Association has appointed an SAI (Sports Authority of India) official as assistant coach and selected his son in the probable’s squad, for the upcoming Santosh Trophy soccer tournament. The 25-member probable team is attending regular practice sessions at the soccer ground of Panjab University under the supervision of same coach.

CFA to select sub-junior team
Chandigarh, January 28-
The Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) will organise the Chandigarh sub-junior football championship for boys at the football stadium Sector 17 from January 30, here. The players born on or after January 1, 1998 will be eligible to take part in the competition. The interested teams can confirm their entries before January 29.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) will conduct selection trials for badminton, gymnastic and swimming, under the sports extension centre scheme at Panjab University, here.
