Marked absent: Desks in govt schools as authorities sleep
Rohtak, January 7 A majority of the over 400 schools in the district were still awaiting a desk for each of the student, the latter appear to be at the receiving end as many of them were still forced to sit of floor, even in the winter season. While the winter break in majority of the private schools had already begun, the government schools would have this break from January 7.
There is no desk in our classroom and we have to squat on floor during the classes daily and to counter the coldness, our teachers take the help of bonfire in the mid of the day, claimed Sonia a student of government middle school, located on the old Jail road here. We are normally expected to bring something along with, to use as seat on the floor as it is very cold these days, said another student of the school. The situation in the government school near Sukhpura locality here is a lettle as there are around 80 desks against the student strength of around 215 in the primary section of the school. The problem of shortage of desks in the school is as old as the government school education system and despite spending crores on this sector, the state government has not been able to bring the government schools at par with private schools, said a retired official of the department. There were a large number of schools where the students studying in sixth to 10th standards of government schools and not having desks so far, claimed the sources in the department. Over 500 students of a school located near the police lines and which was upgraded last year, was still to get desks for its students, said an employee of the department. He admitted that there were many schools in the district which were also faced with shortage of rooms for the past several years. There were only two rooms in the government primary school at Hanuman colony, where the strength of students was around 400. This makes the students to either sit in open or in verandahs of the rooms, claimed the sources. While no official of the education department including the DEO was available for version in this regard, the delay in winter break had also resulted in resentment among both the parents and the students of the government schools.
