Waste management project to go high-tech in Doon
Seema Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, October 25
The Doon Valley Waste Management (DVWM) project run by the SPML company under the Dehradun Municipal Corporation is soon going to go high-tech in the city. The company is introducing gadgets from Germany in order to improve the accountability of its staff engaged in lifting door-to-door garbage from 45 wards of the city, and also to streamline the functioning of the project.

Elaborating more on this issue, Director, SPML, Sidharth Jain, said: “We are importing a radio frequency identification device (RIFD), something like the size of a credit card. Each of this will be stuck on the gates of the residents, who are hiring our services. In

response to RFID, the supervisor deputed to pick up garbage, will be given a logger. The employees will have to show their loggers before the RIFD until it gives a beeping sound. With the sound, their attendance will be registered. The information about their attendance will reach our server, confirming that the employees have gone to collect the garbage.”

This system would also check the complaints of the residents about DVWM employees not coming to collect garbage regularly from their areas. The company would, thus, be able to show the evidence of attendance of its staff, Jain added.

Another gadget is a hand-held machine, a sim card and a thermal printer-enabled tool, which will give out slips to the people when they pay their monthly fees to the staff. As soon as the slips come out of the machine, the server will automatically come to know of the collection of money from the particular customer.

It will become easy for us to keep track of those customers who have not paid their monthly dues and pinpoint them through our server details. Now we will also not need to bank upon vouchers or paper receipts as these things tend to get misplaced or mishandled at times,” Jain said.

The third device to be used is a camera, equipped with GPS technology. These cameras will be installed on the top of 28 vehicles. These are those chosen vehicles, which replace filled mega dustbins with empty and clean dustbins from the busiest spots in the city everyday.

Jain said: “This camera can record upto 1,000 pictures in three seconds. The cameras will record the status of the spots and help in knowing whether the mega bins were replaced or not.” He said people threw heaps of garbage here and there, complaining that DVWM staff put the mega dustbins somewhere else. The cameras would help in knowing whether these mega dustbins were properly placed or not."

Jain said complaints were coming chiefly from Inamulla Road, where a bevy of non-vegetarian shops were lined up.

He said the RFID technique had already been introduced in Nehru Colony as pilot project. For every ward, the company would need one lakh RIFD devices, 200 loggers and 60 hand-held machines.

Sports meet for poor children at St Joseph’s
Tribune News service

Dehradun, October 25
It was a day with a difference at the St Joseph’s Academy (SJA) today as children from five institutions belonging to the deprived and less privileged sections took part in a special sports meet there.

The SJA, under the stewardship of principal Brother AJ George, has been regularly organising such events with a view to providing an opportunity to the poor children to participate in sports events, more in the spirit of fun and frolic than serious athletics, and interact with more fortunate children. Interestingly, the SJA students give generous donations both in cash and kind to the fund that supports such events; even schoolteachers also extend a helping hand towards this noble cause.

Sports Minister Dinesh Agarwal, who was the chief guest, declared the sports meet open. Senior journalist Raj Kanwar was the guest of honour.

In his brief speech, Agarwal complimented the academy principal for organising such events that provided an opportunity to the poor children to literally ‘have a day in the sun’. “The poor children too have their dreams and such events encourage and inspire them to have even bigger dreams,” he said.

The minister expressed the hope that some other schools too would follow this noble tradition. St Joseph’s students personally served packets of goodies and soft drinks to their ‘little guests’. The visiting children felt much pleased at being served by fellow children and said thanks with big smiles on their faces.
