Sleepless Deshraj cries in jail
Chandigarh, October 25
He cries every night, wakes up frequently from his sleep, has turned to religious scriptures and spends time trying to ‘reform’ his fellow inmates. Like most ‘people in high places’, Deshraj Singh, the 32-year-old IPS officer, who until recently drove to his office in a red-beaconed Ambassador car as SP (City), is trying to come to terms with his current address: Burail Jail.

'Power Cut' to hit big screen today

While the star-studded premier of Jaspal Bhatti’s latest movie ‘Power Cut’, scheduled to be held at DT Mall in Chandigarh on Thursday evening, was cancelled, the family said the movie would be released tomorrow across North India and theatres abroad. The film will see the launch of his son Jasraj Bhatti.

A pall of gloom descended on the city as word spread about the tragic demise of comedian and filmmaker Jaspal Bhatti this morning. People from all sections of the society, including actors, politicians and public figures, reached his house in Sector 19 to pay their last respects to the departed soul.

He would tickle everyone’s funny bone within seconds even after a serious lecture. Not only his classmates, but his teachers used to sense and cherish his creativity. He would come out with a satire out of a discussion even in the classroom, leaving a deep impact over everyone.

After failing to nab five accused, including Amandeep Kaur, Superintendent of Police (Vigilance), in the suicide case of Excise and Taxation Officer Ranjit Singh, the Mohali police presented the challan in the court of Additional Sessions Judge AS Rai 67 days after registering an FIR.

Gang of vehicle thieves busted

One member of the gang was adept in preparing fake documents and the police has recovered a total of seven two-wheelers and other fake documents such as driving licenses, registration certificates, voter cards, computer and printers from the accused.

SIT dismantled

Anti-encroachment drive: 50 challaned
Chandigarh, October 25
The enforcement wing of the municipal corporation today issued 50 challans during an anti-encroachment drive in the furniture market, Sector 34, and adjoining areas. The team seized sofa sets, beds, chairs, pillow covers, foam bundles and generator sets. The drive was carried under the supervision of Additional Commissioner Lalit Siwach and assisted by Kashmira Singh and other Sub-Inspectors of the enforcement wing.

Burail Jail warder convicted in corruption case
Chandigarh, October 25
The CBI Special Court of Vimal Kumar today convicted a jail warder in a corruption case. The court held, Satish Kumar, warder of Burail Model Jail, guilty of taking bribe and convicted him under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced tomorrow.

Jeweller commits suicide
Chandigarh, October 25
A 55-year-old owner of a jewellery shop allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan at his Sector 34 residence last night.
