Sainik Sadan project lying abandoned for 5 years
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, August 4
Deputy Commissioner Tanu M Kashayap has assured a delegation of ex-servicemen to take up the matter of completion of Sainik Sadan with the authorities. The Sainik Sadan project was started in 2006 aiming at providing an ECHS polyclinic, a rest house, an office of District Sainik Welfare Officer and an ultra-modern CSD canteen under one roof.

Lt-Colonel Jernail Singh, district president, Ex-Servicemen Cell (PPCC), said a delegation of the ex-servicemen submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding immediate steps to ensure completion of the under-constructed building of Sainik Sadan near Sloh village.

He said the project has been lying abandoned for about five years.

The delegation made the DC aware about the project. As many as 78 marlas of land was purchased and the construction work of the first phase was started on a war footing.

After spending about Rs 65 lakh on the construction of the building of Sainik Sadan, the project was abandoned by the then officials concerned saying that the location of the sadan was far away from the town. The officials even made a proposal to dispose of the incomplete structure so that the money earned from it could be spent on setting up Sainik Sadan in the vicinity of the District Administrative Complex here. The officials also succeeded in getting a piece of land allotted for the purpose near the telephone exchange situated in the District Administrative Complex.

But, as the incomplete structure of the abandoned project of Sainik Sadan could not attract any buyer, so the plan of starting construction work of Sainik Sadan at the new site failed to see light of the day.

Lt-Colonel Jernail Singh said the site of Sainik Sadan is just about three kms from the District Administrative Complex and it is well connected with the link roads. The distance won’t cause any inconvenience to ex-servicemen or their families to have access to facilities, added Jernail Singh.

Deputy Commissioner Tanu M. Kashayap heard the pleas of the delegation and took keen interest in the design of the building and estimates regarding completion of the building.

She assured the delegation to take up the issue with the higher authorities concerned to revive the project, claimed the delegation.
