BJP fails to decide on MC head candidate
Batala, August 2 The Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner, Dr Abhinav Trikha, has now given the BJP time till 11 am on Monday to decide on its candidate after the Wednesday’s meeting convened to appoint the president and the vice-president remained inconclusive. The top post has been lying vacant ever since the previous incumbent Ambika Khanna resigned on April 18. Former SAD legislator Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal, who has also been designated as Halqa in-charge of Batala town by the SAD, led a coup to oust Khanna, who is the daughter of former legislator Jagdeesh Sahni. The BJP has a total of 20 municipal councillors in a house of 33, with its alliance partner - the SAD - having six. The Congress also has six councillors with the sole Independent completing the numbers. The District BJP has already forwarded a panel of five names to the state party high command nearly a month ago. Those MCs who have been named in the panel are Dharambir Seth, Harjit Singh Bhalla, Ramsharan Bhatia, Suman Handa and Harinder Singh. The DC had sent his emissary ADC (General) Baljit Singh to chair the meeting yesterday, but factionalism among the BJP rank and file meant the meeting remained inconclusive. The SAD’s interests were taken care of by Lodhinangal, considered to be a politician who enjoys a lot of clout in the area. He has also remained president of the local Improvement Trust. Since the SAD and the BJP are alliance partners, the understanding reached between both parties is that as the post of the President goes to the BJP, the vice-president will be from the SAD. |
