Power crisis: Farmers to protest today
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 28
Agitated over the power crisis, farmers across the state have decided to hold protests at various state PowerCom offices on Friday.

Comrade Lehember Singh Taggar, general secretary, Punjab Kisan Sabha, in a press release issued here today, said as per the decision by the state working committee, farmers will hold agitations tomorrow outside the PowerCom head office in Patiala and outside the offices of Power Com SDOs, XENs and SEs across Punjab. He said due to the acute power crisis, paddy transplantation had been hit.

He said the farming sector needed at least 16 hour regular power supply during the day, but due to long and unannounced power cuts, farmers were forced to see their crop suffer.

He condemned CM Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal saying their promises to provide adequate power supply to farmers had fallen flat.

During the agitation demand letters will be submitted to power officials in which demands like at least 16-hour power supply in a day, immediate repair of damaged transformers, ending of any domestic power cuts and making Punjab a state with adequate power, as promised by the government - will be put forward.

Also, 100 per cent diesel subsidy for poor farmers will be demanded.
