Batala, June 26
Confusion prevails among the office-bearers of the district unit of the BJP over the naming of the next President of the Batala Municipal Council. A unanimous decision has been taken to ask the state party leadership to name the candidate.

The BJP has now forwarded five names to the state party high command. The names are: Dharambir Seth, Harjit Singh Bhalla, Ramsharann Bhatia and Suman Handa.

Former President and BJP councillor Ambika Khanna resigned as president on April 17. The party is yet to name her successor despite the fact that more than two months have elapsed. The BJP has 19 councillors in a house of 33 with its ally SAD having six councillors. The Congress has six and an Independent completes the numbers.

Batala BJP President Ashok Moudgil denied reports that there was any misunderstanding or confusion among the party rank and file.

He said the district unit had forwarded the names to state BJP Chief Ashwani Sharma for final consideration as the stalemate could not be broken at the local level.

A section of the councillors want a woman to be the next president and the names of Suman Handa, Neelam Mahajan, Neelam Mohan Lal, Kamlesh Seth, Jaspinder Kaur are being touted as the prospective candidates.

Residents said the development works in this industrial town are suffering as the top post is lying vacant.

Dr SS Nijjar, a renowned surgeon and social activist, said “We want a president who concentrates on development and does not carry the nitty-gritty of local politics in his or her bag. The sooner it is resolved, the better it will be for the people.”
