With the arrest of two persons, including a minor, the city police claimed to have solved the murder case of 45-year-old Darshna Devi, a resident of Basti Danishmanda locality. Darshna, who was a domestic servant, was found murdered on May 29. Her naked body was recovered from the fields near her house.

The two arrested were Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Basti Danishmanda, and his 14-year-old cousin, a resident of Kala Sangian road here. Both the accused are migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier, the police suspected that woman might have been raped before being murdered.

But after working on various theories, the police found out that the deceased was a prostitute. She was allegedly asking Rajesh's wife and sister, who were her neighbours, to join prostitution. But Rajesh was seriously against any such offer.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sarabjit Singh said the murder was thoroughly planned as the accused knew that Darshna used to return home from the Kadia road in the late evening. On May 29, the accused hid themselves inside the fields and after intercepting the woman, they forcibly took her inside the fields and attacked her with a heavy wooden stick.

The DCP said after the murder when Rajesh was hiding the body in the fields, his minor cousin fled the scene out of fear.

The DCP said the woman's clothes got torn off when she was trying to escape the assault.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (City II) and Assistant Commission of Police (West) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu said the recovery of Rajesh's purse from the spot helped the police to crack the case and identify the accused.

‘Reason’ for the crime

Rejesh, one of the accused, was unhappy with the deceased's immoral practice. Admitted to his crime, he said in his absence, the woman used to visit his home to ask his wife and sister to join prostitution. When she didn't stop, he planned to kill her

There is no respite for Shahkot commuters, who have to use National Highway 703 daily. A stretch on the national highway has not been repaired for years now.

Different social organisations along with residents had held several protests, but that too had not yielded any result.

On the issue of delay in road work and sewerage laying work, the Public Works Department officials and Sewerage Board officials had their own excuses. The PWD officials had many a times held the sewerage board responsible for the delay saying that the road could not be laid due to the presence of sewer water on the road.

Sarabjit Singh, XEN, Public Works Department, said tenders have already been allotted and the road laying work would start soon.

“A work on the 1.5-km stretch is likely to start in the next week and the work is expected to be completed in three months,” he added.

Earlier, the road laying work was getting delayed because the sewerage line remained clogged and water remained standing on the road. “But now a separate sewerage line has been dug up, which in fact has sorted out the issue of water-logging on the highway,” he said.

Resham Lal, XEN, Sewerage Board, claimed the government had approved 2.43-km sewerage line in Shahkot of which work on 1.3 km has already been completed and remaining work would soon be initiated.

It is pertinent to mention here that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had also taken the notice of this potholed highway few months ago and had directed the officials concerned to speed up the work.

Unsanitary conditions, encroachments, broken roads and wild growth haunt residents of Ward 33.

Two main housing colonies --- Golden Avenue Phase-I and Phase ?II --- were illegal, but were regularised by the government as a majority of residents were ‘high profile’ people.

Residents of Idgah Mohalla and MIG flats said dirty water accumulates on the streets due to a faulty sewerage system. Stench and filth pose a serious health threat to residents.

The area plunges in darkness as streetlights have been lying defunct for a long time. An increase in incidents of thefts and snatchings is a major concern for residents.

Areas: Golden Avenue Phase-I, Gurjeet Nagar, Golden Avenue Phase-II, Dashmesh Nagar, and Chhoti Baradari-II.

Here is a classic tale of two friends, who have woven a success saga by bagging top two positions in B.Sc (IT)-III year in Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Swathy and Sandhya from the Kanya Maha Vidyalaya became each other’s source of motivation and kept their record intact in the university.

Swathy stood first in GND University by scoring 2,017 marks out of 2,500. Sandhya stood second and secured 1,915 marks.

Now, both the friends have decided to pursue M.Sc (IT) also from Kanya Maha Vidyalaya.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, Swathy said, “What else a person requires other than the help and moral support of a friend? Both of us used to make notes together. Sandhya was my support and I was hers.”

“It was a gratifying experience to see both of us rise every year. We paired right in first year of graduation. We studied together to ensure that the successful pairing continues further”, said Swathy.

An ecstatic Sandhya said not only study sessions, they used to take each other’s tests as well. “Even if we were given a topic in the class, we used to make our separate notes and then exchange these with proper discussion and analysis, which ensured our top positions,” she added.

Both the girls did not take any tuition classes too. “Where was the need for tuition when both of us were teaching each other? Anybody can work wonders in life, but if you have wonderful friends around, the journey of success becomes all the more easy,” they said smilingly.

When asked did they ever feel any kind of competition between each other, the girls replied, “Off course competition was always there. But then it was a sort of chemistry, which started working for us and we succeeded”.

The duo said, “We really feel blessed to have such a wonderful friendship. In fact, both of us feel that apart from our hard work, it was our friendship, which helped us in bagging the coveted first two positions in the university”, they maintained.

The duo especially thanked their lecturer Hardeep Kaur for helping and guiding them in achieving their target. “Off course all the lecturers played a major role in our success but the undaunted support of Hardeep Kaur always motivated us to outperform each other,” they said.
