Man stabs brother, sister-in-law
Jalandhar, May 24 Ravinder Kumar, resident of Arya Nagar and adrug addict, allegedly committed the crime in an inebriated condition, revealed Kartarpur Station House Officer (SHO) Inderjit Singh. The SHO said Ravinder, who had been demanding money from his elder brother Rajinder Singh, reached home late last night and indulged in arguments with him after he refused to give him money. Irate over this, Ravinder Singh took out a sharp-edged weapon and stabbed Rajinder in the abdomen. Hearing Rajinder’s shrikes, his wife Bakhshish Kaur came rushing to the room and while trying to save her husband was attacked by Ravinder. Bakhshish Kaur sustained stab injuries in the left side of her chest thus rupturing the main blood vessel of the heart, the SHO revealed. Profusely bleeding Bakshish Kaur was rushed to the Kartarpur Civil Hospital from where the doctors referred her to the Jalandhar Civil Hospital. The injured, however, succumbed to her injuries on her way to the hospital. Rajinder was admitted to a private hospital, where he is said to be out of danger. The SHO said a case of murder and attempt to murder (under Sections 302 and 307 of the IPC) had been registered against Ravinder at the Kartarpur police station on Rajinder Singh’s statement. |
Drive starts at Punjab Roadways Workshop
Jalandhar, May 24 The Punjab Transport Department has allocated the job of replacing the old number plates with new (high security) ones to a Delhi-based private company. The company has set up the machinery and other equipment on the premises of the Transport Department offices in Jalandhar, Patiala, Ludhiana and Amritsar - the districts to be covered in the first phase. District Transport Officer (DTO) RL Jassal revealed that the number plates would cost Rs 142 for two-wheelers, Rs 187 for three-wheelers, Rs 427 for light vehicles, Rs 457 for heavy vehicles and Rs 142 for tractors. The owners would also have to bear 13.75 per cent value added tax (VAT) for replacing the number plates of their vehicles. The department had already received 1,000 applications from vehicle owners for changing the number plates, he added. While the number plates are being fixed by the vehicles registering authorities at the showrooms before a vehicle rolls out on the road, the department has decided to replace the old registration number plates with new ones from June 15, Jassal said. These number plates will be affixed to the vehicle’s bumper or body. A hologram will also be pasted on the front windscreen, which will carry details of the vehicle - registration, engine and chassis numbers. |
MC POLLS
WARD WATCH
Jalandhar, May 24 Child addicts in the Qazi Mandi area don’t go to school because the ward has none (no government schools) and in any case, they like taking drugs more than studying. Every evening, by 5, the business of selling and buying drugs picks up and the men get busy. Many women, too, are addicts. After 10 pm, anyone passing by the area can’t escape without being robbed by drug addicts. The residents too, stay indoors. Abandoned FCI godowns in the ward have been encroached upon by addicts and peddlers, their wooden doors all broken by them. Insanitary conditions prevail in the slum areas of the ward and in the rest of localities, residents say sweepers do not even turn up. Clogged drains, overflowing sewers and mounds of garbage in streets torment residents. Some streets in the Qazi Mandi and Amrik Nagar areas are so badly broken or full of garbage that even walking on them is an ordeal. The ward has no parks or green cover either. Residents say a huge sewerage water-filled dump in the area was a clean plot until the councillor decided to direct the flow of sewerage water (thrown out by a sewer outlet on the street) into the plot some days ago. The Bhatta Road, which is the only connecting road between Guru Gobind Singh Avenue and the city, is in a bad state and floods in rains, causing residents to take a long detour from across the Lamma Pind to reach the posh avenue from the city. Areas in ward
Qazi Mandi, Ajit Nagar, Amrik Nagar, Madrasi Mohalla, Santoshi Nagar, Guru Gobind Singh Avenue, Surya Enclave, Ram Vihar and Royal Enclave Colony. Amount spent
Councillor Gurmail Singh says he has spent Rs 4 crore in the ward in the last five years. He claims he got two tubewells sunk in the ward and also worked on interlocking tiles, water supply and sewerage work in the Ajit Nagar, Amrik Nagar and Santoshi Nagar areas. FCI godowns
“I have written to the FCI Chairman many times but to no avail. They are not directly under me, but still my efforts to fight encroachments and bring things to the notice of higher-ups have failed to bear results,” the councillor said. On residents’ accusation that the councillor promotes addiction, he said, “A look at my works will tell people I have been working to fight the menace. Earlier smack used to be sold in the ward, but I have stopped that. The police is a witness to my anti-addiction efforts. Prospective candidates
In the ward reserved for Backward Classes (BC), present councillor Gurmail Singh would be contesting elections from the BJP. From the Congress, Palni Apal (Madarasi) will be contesting from the ward. |
Contests to be fierce in some wards
Jalandhar, May 24 Rajinder Beri had recently contested the Assembly polls and lost to BJP’s Manoranjan Kalia by just 1,065 votes. The Beri couple has won last three polls consecutively. Sachar has largely confined himself to the organisation work of the party and has a strong hold. Both of them are residents of Central Town. Sitting councillor versus youth leader
The second most keenly contested seat would be Ward 46 (SC reserved) where the BJP’s youth wing leader Rajan Angural and a close aide of MLA Bhagat Chunni Lal would contest against Sushil Kumar Rinku, husband of sitting Congress councillor Sunita Rinku. Sitting councillor versus doctors
Ward 55 of the city’s elites would be watching contest among sitting Congress councillor Aruna Arora andh an eye specialist Dr Satbir Singh Bhaura of the PPP and veterinarian Dr Sukhrajpal Singh Bhatti of the SAD. Arch rivals pitch in wives
Arch rivals and last-term contestants Major Singh from Congress and Kamal Sharma from the BJP have pitched in their wives Amanpreet Kaur and Shradha Sharma, respectively, from Ward 48 (reserved for women). MLAs’ kin
The fate of two newcomers and kin of MLAs of the ruling party would also be watched with interest. BJP MLA KD Bhandari’s cousin Ashwini Bhandari is contesting from sitting BJP Mayor Rakesh Rathour’s Ward 20. He is pitted against the Congress’ leader Chaman Lal Dada, who had contested last elections as well. Akali MLA Pargat Singh’s sister-in-law Parminder Kaur Pannu, too, is contesting from Ward 60 (reserved for women). The Congress has fielded Sarita Sharma from the ward. Husband, wife get ticket
It would also be interesting to watch the outcome of husband-wife duo contesting from two consecutive wards - 36 and 37. Since Ward 36 of the sitting Congress councillor Jagdish Raja got reserved for women, he has fielded his wife and former Senior Deputy Mayor Anita Raja. He has also succeeded in getting ticket for himself from Ward 37. Important Independents
The decision of the rebels to contest independently can also make a big difference in many wards as in Ward 34. The Congress ticket has gone to Sushma Gautam today, which has led to much resentment in the family of the sitting councillor Anup Kaur. The BJP is yet to open its cards from the seat. There also are speculations of state BJP leader Saroj Malhotra being fielded from the ward. Another independent contestant and sitting councillor Raminder Kaur Dhinsa from Ward 31 stands a good chance. Her husband Iqbal Singh Dhinsa is an Akali representative and member of the Zila Parishad. She filled in her papers today as an Independent candidate. The BJP already has fielded Ram Lubhaya Kapoor, while the Congress today named Kiran Sareen. All other six sitting Independent councillors have been given ticket by the Congress or the BJP. |
Cong ignores assembly poll rebels
Jalandhar, May 24 Pawan Gupta denied ticket
Congress candidate Rajinder Beri, who lost Assembly elections from the Jalandhar (Central) seat, managed to convince the state Congress leadership for not allocating the party ticket to former MLA Raj Kumar Gupta’s sitting councillor son Pawan Gupta from Ward Number 24, alleging that both the father-son had not supported him in the recent Assembly elections. The Congress allocated the party ticket from the Jalandhar (Central) constituency to Raj Kumar Gupta during Assembly polls, but later it replaced the candidate with Rajinder Beri after strong opposition by Congress councillors from various wards falling under this seat. At this, annoyed Raj Kumar Gupta and Pawan Gupta did not campaign for Rajinder Beri and he lost the elections with a thin margin. Dhal’s brother ignored
Former minister Avtar Henry also used his influence for not allocating the party ticket to youth leader Dinesh Dhal Kali’s brother from Ward Number 19. Congress councillor Dhal had contested the recent Assembly elections as an independent candidate against Avtar Henry from the Jalandhar (North) seat. Several members of the Congress campaign committee were reportedly in favour of allocating ticket from this ward to Dhal’s brother. The Congress fielded here a new face Anil Vashisth, who staged a dharna outside district Congress office for alleged unjust allocation of tickets in the recent Assembly elections. Rinku makes it
Sushil Rinku managed to get a ticket from Ward Number 46 despite his reported opposition by Jalandhar MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee. Sitting councillor Sunita Rinku’s husband Sushil had initially opposed allocation of the ticket to Kaypee’s wife Suman from the Jalandhar (West) Assembly seat. 26 women, 4 Balmiks
While only 20 seats are reserved for women, the Congress fielded as many as 26 women for the ensuing MC polls. Prominent among them are Janak Rani (Ward 2), sitting councillor Nirmaljit Singh Nimma’s wife Dalwinder Kaur (Ward 8), former councillor Sushma Gautam (Ward 34) and sitting councillor Aruna Arora (Ward 55). Similarly four Balmiks have also been allocated party tickets. The Congress has fielded as many as 37 new faces which include activist Arun Sharma Pappu’s wife Rani Sharma (Ward Number 29) and Heera Batra’s wife Shabana Batra (Ward Number 26). Beri’s wife gets ticket
While former councillors Mohinder Singh Gullu and Darshan Singh did not get tickets, Rajinder
Beri managed to get ticket for his wife and former councillor Uma Beri from Ward 30. Couple in contest
Interestingly, leader of Opposition in the MC House Jagdish Raj Raja got the party ticket for himself from Ward 37 and for his wife, former
councillor Anita Raj, from Ward 36. |
Three arrested under Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act
Jalandhar, May 24 This is perhaps the first case registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, by the Jalandhar police in the past over five years. Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap on the GT Road at Pathankot Chowk and intercepted a Tata Ace being used by the accused in transporting the beef. After a search of the vehicle, the police recovered six plastic bags containing beef. Balkar Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), revealed that Khan, Azijul, both hailing from West Bengal, and Babu Ram, a resident of Basti Chungi in Ferozepur, were carrying the bags containing beef. They were on their way from Ferozepur to Jalandhar while they were nabbed. The ACP revealed that a team of veterinary doctors led by senior veterinary doctors JK Chopra, visited the police station, Division No 8, and inspected the beef. The veterinary doctors also took samples of the beef and subsequently send them to a Mathura-based veterinary laboratory for examination. The ACP said during preliminary examinations, veterinary experts found that the beef being carried by the trio was cow meat. During interrogating, Balkar Singh said, the accused admitted that they were into this illegal trade for quite some time. The beef that they had smuggled from Ferozepur was to be sold on retail basis at Kazi Mandi, a hub of drug paddlers, in Jalandhar. A case under Sections 3, 5 and 8 of the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, has been registered against the accused. |
