2 SAD candidates elected unopposed
One Congress candidate withdraws, nomination papers of another rejected Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, May 30 Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia of the SAD is the only candidate left (barring his wife and covering candidate Jaspal Kaur) from the ward, owing to which he became the winner unopposed at least 10 days ahead of the polls. Congress candidate Gulshan Kumar, donning a saffron cloth around his neck, came along with Bhatia to withdraw his papers. Both Bhatia and Gulshan hugged each other and got their pictures clicked in the office of Chief Agriculture Officer-cum-Returning Officer Swatantra Kumar Aeri. Accompanying Bhatia was former minister and election in charge of the SAD Sewa Singh Sekhwan and district Akali president Gurcharan Singh Channi. Bhatia said Gulshan was a friend of his deceased son Charanpreet Singh and therefore he came in his support. Gulshan on the other hand blamed it on the local Congress leadership for not responding to him and coming in his support for the campaign. Asked as to why he thought they did not support him, he fumbled, “I think they were scared of the might of Bhatia. I have been calling all leaders over phone since the past five days, none of them had taken my calls and I was feeling a bit dejected.” Gulshan has withdrawn his papers just a day after he filed them yesterday. Bhatia brimmed with excitement as he kept on calling his party leaders and supporters. He said, “I want to go back and rejoice with the residents of my ward.” Asked if he would take out a road show, he seemed a bit emotional, “I was confident of the victory. But this is giving me even more satisfaction. I would just want to thank them all. They have helped me fulfil my lost son’s dream to see me elected unopposed. Now I would be free to go to other wards and help other Akali candidates in their campaign.” Papers of Congress candidate rejected
In another blow to the Congress, the papers of the party candidate and even her covering candidate from Ward 21 were rejected by SDM-I Iqbal Singh Sandhu. Returning Officer-cum-SDM-I Iqbal Singh Sandhu said the papers of main candidate Anita Seth and her covering candidate Reena Wadhwa were cancelled as their proposers were from Ward 20 and 5, respectively. Sandhu said, “As per Section 38 (1) of the Punjab State Election Commission Act-1994, a proposer of a candidate has to be from the same ward. The candidate may be himself from another ward. Hence, the papers were rejected.” This leaves only Dalwinder Kaur Gandhi, wife of sitting Akali councillor Kamaljit Gandhi, as the only contestant (other than covering candidate Harpreet Kaur). The Returning Officer said once Harpreet Kaur would withdraw her papers tomorrow, Gandhi would be declared winner unopposed. Papers of underage candidate rejected
The papers of another Independent candidate from Ward 33 Manisha Salaria have been rejected for she was found to be underage. While 21 years is the minimum age, she
is just 20. Even as both Sonia Bhardwaj and Joginder Kaur had filed their papers as BJP candidates from Ward 33, none had attached authority letters. Both were asked to produce letters today. Since only Sonia managed to do it, she was declared as the party candidate, while Joginder Kaur was declared Independent candidate, said Assistant Returning Officer-cum-Tehsildar-II Aman Pal Singh. |
Only Sodal Nagar residents have complaints here
Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, March 30 The biggest problem for the residents is no proper garbage dumping sites. In one of the most ill-maintained parks in Sodal Nagar, all the garbage carts filled with litter are lined up. This leaves the parents with two options, either to send their children in unhygienic environment or to allow them to play on roads taking a bigger risk. Residents said it was after the elections were declared that the parks were being spruced up now. With the wife of the sitting Akali councillor likely to be declared unopposed with the cancellation of the candidature of the Congress candidate, the residents also rue not getting the chance to vote. Residents stand divided by crossings
Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, March 30 Even as an ROB has been constructed across the DAV College, residents of Kabir Nagar claimed that it had become a bane for them as it had left them alienated and cornered on one end. "There is track on one side, bridge on the national highway at its right angles and a huge wall of Burlton Park on the third side. Our connectivity with the other areas of the ward has been cut off," they rued. For the same reasons, residents on one side of the crossings feel that they would cast vote only for the candidate on their side as it would be difficult for them to approach the person on the other side for various works in case he gets voted to power. Kabir Nagar residents have independent candidate Sarfo Devi and BJP candidate Sulekha Bhagat on their side. Residence of Anjali Bhagat of the Congress is in Gandhi Nagar and that of independent candidate Bavi Pal is in Ram Nagar, both colonies falling on the other side of the crossing. To cover up on the other side, candidates have been setting up offices on other end like the way Sulekha Bhagat is doing. "I have my residence in Kabir Nagar. Tomorrow, I will have an office in Gandhi Nagar so that residents in the area are easily able to approach me", she said. Even as there are no problems of roads and sewage, the residents claimed that safai karamcharis were not coming regularly owing to which they had to sometimes clean roads in front of their houses on their own. Major areas
Kabir Nagar, Friends Colony, Chhota Gandhi Camp, Gandhi Nagar, Grain Market, Gurdev Nagar, Balmik Mohalla, Satnam Nagar. Residents speak There is no garbage picking in Kabir Nagar. We have been ourselves disposing off litter in a corner in Burlton Park. The MC garbage lifting trucks take away litter only after three to four days from the site. — Kanta Devi |

Tired of the bumpy ride
Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, March 30 Residents of Banda Singh Bahadur Nagar complained that since the roads in their colony had been constructed in rainy season last year, these started getting washed off as soon as these were laid. They also blamed poor drainage system for the breaking of roads. "Water used to get frequently clogged here. After much persuasion, we got road gullies constructed only to find them blocked with bricks, sand, stones and other construction material," they said. Residents of Sangat Singh Nagar, however, rue that there was no park for their children to play. "For nearly 100 children in our colony, roads and parking lots in market areas are the only playgrounds," they said. Councillor speaks I have left no work incomplete in my ward. The only problem left is regarding shortage of drinking water in Banda Singh Bahadur Nagar and Windsor Park. New tubewells in both colonies have been sanctioned and the work has begun. -- Pawan Gupta Residents speak

Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, May 30 While till a few years ago, the summer camp fad hadn’t caught on big enough with city schools, today they are looking for innovative new ideas to give that perfect summer break for their loved students. While some schools are opting for creative sessions where students get to express their creative selves through art, others are sending them off to happening vacations at summer hot spots across India and yet others are giving them those early fitness lessons with sessions in dance, swimming, sports, etc. Police DAV Public School
It’s more of the creative side of students that is being explored at the school. For the primary students, various activities are woven together to give them the perfect summer break. Activities like art, face painting, hairstyling, Bollywood and contemporary dancing, painting games, magic shows are keeping children busy. For classes VI to VIII, however, work experience classes are the new fad. Students are taught the skill of designing and creating 3D projects, which involve chart making, texture, border, calligraphy, thermocol cutting, relief models, use of POP, use of clay, etc. Meal-planning, computing, gadget handling, decorative skills, preparation of texture sheets, paper bags and shagun envelope-making lessons are also provided. Other skill-based activities include folk singing, dance, bhangra, skating, swimming, abacus learning, vocabulary building, spoken English, and cooking. School Principal Rashmi Vij says, “The work experience classes will be new for children. I totally detest the fact that work models assigned to students are often prepared by experts or parents. These classes attempt to do away with that trend. We will also be grading models and putting them up for display in labs, to ensure that children take them seriously.” A 10-day summer camp at this school is currently on. On from May 28 to June 7, this summer camp mostly involves artistic activities. Papier Mache (making masks, lampshades and bowls), T-shirt designing (with embossed medium), decoupage (wall hangings, wall clocks and wooden objects), glass painting, candle making, baking, cooking, calligraphy, sports activities (cricket, soccer, golf and basketball), horse-riding, gymnastics, karate, swimming, instrumental and vocal music lessons, as well as contemporary dance classes are the school’s offerings for an arty, active summers for students. Apart from this, the “Cynosure” workshop for personality development of students is also being held currently. Late during the vacations (in the month of July) dance classes will also be held at the school. Ambika Sharma, a teacher in the school, said, “We believe in providing the perfect educational experience tor our school students. While summers are a time to chill out, we want to keep the lessons as light as possible so that the children’s knowledge and experience is enhanced without them being stressed.” The school plans a precious lesson in theatre for students during the upcoming summer camp in June. While music, art and craft as well as dance classes will begin from June 16 at the school, the school authorities are also mulling a theatre workshop for give students some lessons in drama. School Director Seema Handa says, “Theatre is a very interesting element for a child’s growth. It teaches students many things at once. We are mulling a tie-up with city-based theatre group YUVA to provide summer lessons in theatre for our students.” |
