Company Garden parking staff beat up visitors from Meerut
Mussoorie, June 3 One such incident occurred at Company Garden roadside parking on Saturday evening where tourists from Meerut, who were on a day's visit to Company Garden, were beaten up badly by employees of the contractor running the roadside parking when they refused to pay more for parking their vehicle at the site. According to the tourists Mahendar Singh and Narendar Singh from Meerut, the employees of the contractor managing the parking at Company Garden stopped them a kilometre away from the main gate of the garden and demanded Rs 50 as parking fee, which they paid duly. Following that when they arrived at the main gate of Company Garden to park their vehicle, Dzire Swift, the parking employees began demanding Rs 50 as the parking fee once again. When they tried to oppose the move the parking employees began hurling abuses at them, demanding more for the same service, and when the duo blatantly refused to pay any extra amount, they were beaten up by a gang that surrounded them from all sides. The pleas of the female members of the tourist family were also ignored and the beating continued until several minutes, resulting in severe injuries and torn clothes of the tourists. The brawl came to end only after the intervention of the shopkeepers around in the area. No police personnel was present at th site when the incident occurred on Saturday. The tourists also showed the various parking receipts with denominations of Rs 50 and Rs 100 to the mediapersons in their possession, indicating the fleecing done by the parking contractor here. The tourists then tried to contact the police by dialing emergency number 100 but received no response. Battered and bruised, the tourists left the spot without registering any case, vowing never to visit Mussoorie again. The police station in-charge, Parikshat Kumar, when informed did not show much interest in the matter, otherwise the whole incident could have been avoided. Later at night when the whole incident was brought to the notice of SP, City, Dehradun, Neeru Garg, she immediately summoned the Mussoorie police station in-charge Parikshat Kumar who showed his ignorance in the whole matter. Agitated at the callous reply, Neeru Garg then directed other police officials to reach Mussoorie and apprehend the perpetrators at any cost. The Circle officer (CO), Mussoorie, MS Pharaswan, accompanied by his colleagues and one platoon of PAC reached the town around midnight and began searching for the culprits. The police today were able to apprehend three persons involved in the case of which, one related to the Bharat Kumain, contractor of the parking area, was also apprehended. The three have been identified as Rahul, Kuldeep and Harish, and a case has been registered against them under Sections 151, 323, and were presented in the SDM's court at Dehradun. The SP, City, has also set up an enquiry against the Mussoorie police station in-charge on his dubious role in the whole incident and has also stepped the security arrangements by deploying additional forces at the all the tourist spots of the town. When contacted, CO, Mussoorie, MS Pharaswan, said that after apprehending the three culprits they have also constituted an enquiry on what conditions the Municipal Council had awarded the contract to the alleged contractor Bharat Kumain. When contacted the Municipal Council president, OP Uniyal said that before allotting the parking contract, the Municipal Council clearly directs the contractor to fix the rate, which is not more than Rs 40. He has directed his officials to investigate the matter of overcharging from the tourists, and if found guilty, punitive action would be initiated against the contractor of the parking area. On the other hand, Rohitash Sharma was not clear on the tariff decided for the said parking and was not sure of the amount of tariff designated by MC, thus indicating some clandestine understanding between the MC officials and the contractor under which the parking had been awarded earlier. He, however, affirmed that the whole matter will be investigated thoroughly and strict action taken against the contractor, if found guilty. The local residents and the public representatives have condemned the incident and have aired their resentment against such ghastly incidents that and are holding the Municipal Council responsible for the whole incident as it was the same agency that awarded the contract to such miscreants who have brought the town down in shame. They also demanded strict action against the contractor, as he was the person who employed such miscreants at the parking in Company Garden. Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has also been hurt with the incident against the tourists here. Through a press note released today in which it was stated: " Four persons were arrested for misbehaving with tourists on Saturday night. As soon as the incident had come to the notice of Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, he immediately directed the District Magistrate and SSP to take action. On the complaint made against the police personnel for their lackadaisical attitude, Chief Minister had asked the SSP to initiate the probe and take appropriate action. Bahuguna said that any kind of misbehavior with tourists would not be tolerated. He has directed the officials to ensure safety of the tourists in the state." |

Support pours in for Ramdev's crusade against graft
Dehradun, June 3 While a day-long fast was organised at Pandit Deendayal Park, Bharat Swabhiman members also took out a candlelight march later in the evening, which started from the park and culminated at Clock Tower. Bharat Swabhiman members pledged to fully support yoga guru Baba Ramdev's struggle against corruption. KK Rana, convener of Bharat Swabhiman, Dehradun, KK Agarwal, Dinesh and Ratan Lal were among prominent participants in the fast. HARIDWAR: While yog guru Swami Ramdev sat on a one-day agitation at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi along with Gandhian Anna Hazare, in his support thousands of activists of Bharat Swabhiman Trust, followers of Swami Ramdev and common people, too, sat on agitation at various places in Haridwar. At Patanjali Yogpeeth, 17 km from Haridwar city, people associated with all the trusts of Swami Ramdev, sat on agitation, demanding bringing back black money stacked in foreign bank accounts. A large number of visitors coming to Patanjali Yogpeeth also extended their support to the agitation. At Rishikul ground, in the midst of the city, a massive protest was carried out under the aegis of Bharat Swabhiman Trust. Be it saints, social activists, Ramdev's followers, local residents or outside pilgrims and tourists, everyone thronged the venue to usher in support to the anti-corruption movement spearheaded by the yog guru. Uttarakhand in-charge of Bharat Swabhiman Trust Mohan Yogi said that thousands of crores of rupees were being deposited in Swiss and other foreign banks owing to mass corruption in the country. He demanded bringing back of this money to India. Revered saint Mahamandaleshwar Swami Harichetanand called on for good practises in one's life and doings as corruption was getting deep rooted in society, which was seriously hampering the rich Indian culture of truth, clarity and accountability. Apart from these programmes, reports also came from different parts of the district, Roorkee, Mangalore, Lakshar, Jwalapur, Bhagwanpur, Khanpur and Bahadrabad, of people supporting Swami Ramdev's anti-black money campaign. |
Verbal duel between yoga guru’s supporters, Congress men
Haridwar, June 3 The incident took place at 11.15 am when Bharat Swabhiman Trust activists were staging an agitation in support of Ramdev’s anti-black money campaign being held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Sewa Dal activists had planned a protest march against Ramdev today. When their march reached near the venue where Ramdev's supporters were staging an agitation, they started raising slogans him. His supporters urged Congress activists to pass silently as a public agitation was going on, but the latter increased sloganeering, which lead to a verbal duel between both sides. Seeing the situation aggravating, additional police force was called in by police personnel deployed at the venue. When police force, led by SP (city) Yogendra Singh Rawat, reached the venue, they dispersed the Sewa Dal activists from the agitation venue. Saints, social activists and women speakers, who were present at the venue, have condemned this act of Congress activists. However, Sewa Dal spokesperson Rajesh Rastogi said they were just exposing the "dual" working of Ramdev as on the one hand, he had been accusing Congress leaders of indulging in corruption, on the other hand, he had failed to disclose the source of his billion-dollar assets. Meanwhile, anti-Ramdev march carried out by Congress activists after passing through various city intersections culminated at the City Magistrate's office, where they burnt tyres. |
Raksha morcha backs power projects
Dehradun, June 3 At a meeting of the morcha held in Dehradun, it was decided to back the construction of hydro power projects in the state. Speakers at the meeting held that hydro power projects were the major source of revenue for Uttarakhand and by stopping the construction of these projects, the financial interests of the state was being adversely affected. Morcha leaders also sought the permanent capital status for Gairsain. They said by holding just one Cabinet meeting at Gairsain won’t do and the state government must rather be given a permanent capital status to the region. The meeting also resented giving land rights to Bangladeshi settlers in the Sitaraganj
region. Raksha Morcha president Lt-Gen TPS Rawat (retd) on the occasion also announced the new state working committee of the morcha. The new working committee has eight vice-presidents and seven secretaries. Surendra Singh Pangtey apart
from treasurer would also be chief adviser to the president of the party. PC Thapliyal has been retained as chief spokesman |
Bahuguna wooing Bengalis to win byelection
There were lot of political developments and drama in Uttarakhand in the past fortnight with the ruling Congress winning over a BJP legislator Kiran Mandal representing the Sitarganj assembly segment. This reduced the BJP strength in the state assembly to 30 while the Congress has 32 legislators. The state government is also supported by three independents, three members from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and lone UKD (P) member. As promised to Kiran Mandal, the state Congress government announced to give ownership rights to all those lease holders who got government lands on lease for agricultural purposes. Kiran Mandal, who himself belongs to the Bengali immigrant community, had been demanding ownership rights to the Bengali immigrant community from east Bengal settled in the Terai region, particularly Sitarganj of Udham Singh Nagar district. These Bengali immigrants had agricultural land but in the absence of ownership rights they were not able to get any loan on these lands. The decision will benefit 40,000 Bengali families in the Terai region besides other communities holding similar agricultural land on lease in the state. However, there is another important political dimension of this move. It is also seen as a move by Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna to find a suitable winnable assembly segment for himself. After being elected as Chief Minister on March 13, 2012, he has to enter the state assembly within six months. In the given political situation in the Uttarakhand Congress where a powerful section of Congress leaders, including legislators owing allegiance to Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Food Processing and Agriculture Harish Rawat, are against the Chief Minister, it is difficult to find a safe seat for him. Apart from the fear of the Harish Rawat camp working against him in the assembly byelection, the caste combination in the Garhwal region from where Bahuguna belongs has also added to the woes of the Bahuguna supporters. The memories of the defeat of former Chief Minister BC Khanduri, a cousin of Chief Minister Bahuguna in the state assembly polls from Kotdwar, are also fresh in the minds of the state Congress leaders. It was believed that with winning over Kiran Mandal, the Chief Minister could decide to contest the byelection to enter the assembly from the Sitarganj assembly segment vacated by Kiran Mandal. The Chief Minister has also promised the Bengali population of Terai to get the Scheduled Castes status for “Nemo Shudras”. He promised to take up their case with the Union Government. With a majority, the Bengali population who are happy with the grant of ownership rights of their agricultural lands and a sizeable Muslim population, it could be a safe bet for the Chief Minister, according to political observers. A Congress rally to thank the Chief Minister Bahuguna was held at Sitarganj. According to party leaders, Chief Minister Bahuguna wanted to himself gauge the feeling of the people through the response of the rally before deciding to jump into the fray. The hiatus between the warring factions of the Congress led by Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and Harish Rawat refuse to die down. Harish Rawat who had raised a banner of revolt against the decision of the Congress high command to appoint Vijay Bahuguna as Chief Minister after the state assembly polls, was placated with his supporters getting adjusted on important positions. He got a Rajya Sabha nomination for his supporter Mahendra Singh Mahra and got another of his loyalist Govind Singh Kunjwal as Speaker of the house. Many of his supporters also got into the Bahuguan ministry. But he has not spared any opportunity to hit at the knuckles of Chief Minister Bahuguna. While, Bahuguna has openly come out in support of starting the stalled hydro-electric projects in the state, Harish Rawat has taken a diametrically opposite stand. He has called for launching a campaign to save rivers and rivulets of the state and opposed bigger hydro-electric projects. He also called for preserving the environment of the state. The Chief Minister in an attempt to win over the hearts of hill people has announced to hold a cabinet meeting at Gairsain in Chamoli district on October 2, 2012, a place demanded by the statehood agitators to be made permanent capital of the state, followed by a assembly session next year. Harish Rawat has cautioned that being a sensitive issue, the state government should take such decisions which it could fulfil otherwise, it could boomerang on the party. He has also expressed his reservations about the manner in which Kiran Mandal, a BJP legislator, was won over by the Congress. It could be an interestingly battle within the Congress in the state in the run up to two byelections, one for Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna to enter the assembly and another for Tehri Lok Sabha, a seat to be vacated by him.
