Water scarcity hits many districts
Dehradun, May 26 In Haldwani, the acute water crisis has forced the Jal Sansthan to go for reorganisation of the existing water schemes that include increasing the capacity of main overhead water storage tanks and also increasing the size of pipe supplying water to households. “The pressure of increasing population is such that the existing water system cannot withstand the load. We have advanced the reorganisation of water supply to be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) from tranche III to tranche II, which will be carried in the next coming months,” said DD Dimri, Chief General Manager (CGM), Jal Sansthan. Over the years in Haldwani, the demand for water supply has increased from 40lpcd to 100lpcd and the problem of water shortage is acute in the suburban areas that earlier fell under the rural areas. “There is a gap between supply and demand in these areas and these areas cannot be supplied water according to the norms for the rural areas where the supply is less,” said PC Kimothi, Secretary, Appraisal, Jal Sansthan. In Almora, the old pumping schemes too have started created problems and the Jal Sansthan is banking heavily on the construction of Rs 12,000 crore dam on the Kosi river. “Meanwhile, we are trying to augment the water supply schemes from seven springs originating in forests in Almora district,” said Dimri. The intermittent water scarcity being faced in Pauri is expected to get over with the commissioning of the Pauri Nan Ghat scheme that entails the construction of an 80 km line. It will be commissioned on June 30 this year. In Dehradun, most of the problem areas are located around Pithuwala, where some of the areas are under village schemes. “This years, the areas of Balawala, Motherawala and other semi-urban areas faced water shortage due to poor supply. As these fell under the rural areas, the water was being supplied according to rural norms ie 40lpcd,” said DD Dimri. |

RLEK members to protest for restart of power projects
Dehradun, May 26 They would request the legislators on the first day of the session to pass a unanimous resolution to restart the stalled hydropower projects, which were 100 per cent state owned, as the state government had in the past written to the Centre for the closure of the projects. These projects were started after all clearances from the government. More than 50 per cent work had been completed on these projects and thousands of crores of rupees of public money had been spent. “We want to make it clear that the Dhari Devi temple was constructed in the Ganga and the temple which would have submerged in the reservoir of the Srinagar hydroelectric project was being shifted to the bank of the river. This way it was ensured that the flow of the Ganga should not be interrupted. We appeal to the Parmath Niketan to remove encroachment from the Ganga in Rishikesh,” said Awadhash Kaushal, chairperson of RLEK. He appealed to GD Agarwal and Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand to follow the code of the ‘bhagwa vastra’ (saffron clothes) and desist from petty politics and not obstruct the development of the state. “If they are much concerned about the purity of the Ganga they should shift their agitation to Kanpur and Varanasi,” said Kaushal. |
