Supreme Court cancels 122 spectrum licences
nTrial court to decide on CBI probe against Chidambaram n Govt told to auction 2G spectrum afresh in 4 months 
New Delhi, February 2
In a huge embarrassment to the government and a jolt to the telecom sector, the Supreme Court today cancelled 122 2G licences granted during the tenure of former Telecom Minister A Raja declaring it as “illegal” and blamed the government's flawed first-come-first-served policy.

The Supreme Court judgement in the 2G spectrum case will lead to an increase in call rates for more than 90 crore mobile subscribers, dampen the investment environment and facing charges of crony capitalism, hopefully change the way corporates do business.

A day before the Supreme Court hears the Army Chief’s petition on the age row, sources confirmed that the Adjutant General’s branch — the official record keeper of the Army — has not yet acted on the advice of the Ministry of Defence to reconcile the date of birth (DoB) of General VK Singh.

NRI Marriage Desertion
Centre revises purview of assistance for women
New Delhi, February 2
The Centre has revised the scheme to provide assistance to women who are married and then abandoned by their husbands overseas.
Official sources said the scheme would now be applicable to all women deserted in India or overseas within 15 years of the marriage.

CCTV footage helps nab man for acid attack
Mumbai, February 2
Footage from closed circuit television cameras installed inside the Goregaon railway station in suburban Mumbai helped nab a youth who threw acid on a young woman on Tuesday evening. The railway police arrested Pintoo Shaikh on Wednesday morning.

Mobile phone companies who were in business prior to the January 2008 auction of 2G spectrum are expected to benefit from today’s Supreme Court verdict which cancelled the controversial allocation of licences by former telecom minister A Raja. “Companies like Vodafone, Bharati Airtel and Idea who won licenses prior to 2008 will benefit from today’s Supreme Court verdict,” says Abhay Pendharkar, a telecom industry analyst with a Mumbai brokerage. DSP, woman hacked to death in Ludhiana
Ludhiana, February 2

Balraj S Gill In a sensational double murder, Moga DSP Balraj Singh Gill was found hacked to death along with a woman at a farmhouse on the Hambran road here today. The blood-soaked bodies of the duo were found by a police party, which was searching for the ‘missing’ DSP since last evening, at the farmhouse.
