CCTV footage helps nab man for acid attack
Shiv Kumar/TNS

Mumbai, February 2
Footage from closed circuit television cameras installed inside the Goregaon railway station in suburban Mumbai helped nab a youth who threw acid on a young woman on Tuesday evening.

The railway police arrested Pintoo Shaikh on Wednesday morning. According to the Borivli railway police station officer probing the incident, CCTV footage showed that Shaikh had sneaked up the 22-year-old woman from behind while she was talking on her mobile and flung acid on her.

The victim, Arti Thakur, suffered 10 to 15% burns on her face and upper body and has been admitted to hospital, the police said. Her condition is said to be stable.

Though Shaikh managed to escape despite the train station being crowded with office-goers rushing home, he was arrested today. Police said a case of attempt to murder has been registered against him.

Arti Thakur told the police that this was the third attack on her. Her mother told the police that in November and December last year, unknown persons had slashed Arti’s face with a knife. No one was arrested for the previous attacks.
