Jalandhar, January 4 Data compiled by the Government Railway Police (GRP) reveals that 197 persons lost their lives in accidents on tracks. Out of these 172 are men, 24 are women and a child. A maximum of 26 people died in rail accidents in July -23 men and three women. In September, 19 men and four women lost tjeir lives in accidents on railway tracks. Besides, 65 persons committed suicide on railway tracks - 55 men and 10 women. In June, 11 persons committed suicides. GRP records reveal that 77 persons died natural death on railway tracks and out of which 68 were men, eight women and a child. |

Bhagat begins his election campaign
Jalandhar, January 4 The candidate, along with his son Mahinder Bhagat, took out a rally in his constituency. Octogenarian Bhagat could not even stand in his open vehicle and rather preferred to sit. Owing to this, the others in the open jeep, including SAD’s senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Bhatia and party youth leader Sheetal Angural, stole the limelight. Also stealing the show was his son Mahinder Bhagat who too remained garlanded and walked ahead of the procession greeting everyone. The procession went through Nakodar Road, lanes of Bhargo Camp, Basti areas and other colonies falling in the constituency. Meanwhile, there have been reports of BJP leader and Punjab Khadi Board chairman Vijay Sampla who too has been a ticket contender, thinking of a shift.

Jalandhar, January 4 Sources said Rs 3,10,000 were seized from Surinder Singh, a resident of Roopowali village in Hoshiarpur, who failed to acciunt the source of the money leading to the seizure. Another Rs 33 lakh were seized from Himanshu Dogra, an employee working with the SBI here. Sources said the person carrying the cash later produced the source of the money and hence the cash was released by the Income Tax Officials later. This evening, the police also seized unaccounted cash of Rs 3,10,000 from Suraj Jaiswal, a resident of Deep Nagar here, but the amount was released by IT Officer after verification. Sources said 1,12,500 ml illicit liquor was also seized today.
