Rebellion in SAD: Tikka to contest as independent

Two run over by train near Phagwara
Phagwara, December 29
Two persons were run over by trains, while another unidentified person was found dead in a train bound for Lohian on Wednesday night. An unidentified person was run over by a train between Goraya and Phillaur, while a middle-aged man, identified as Kuldip Ram of Gulabgarh, was crushed under a train near the Mauli railway station in Phagwara.

Head constable killed in road accident
Shahkot, December 29
A head constable was killed in a head on collision between the car and a truck near Kangna village in Shahkot late last night.

Illicit liquor seized, 11 booked

The district police booked 11 persons under the Excise and NDPS Act. The police also seized 450 kg of lahan besides 72,720 ML of illicit liquor besides 100 gm intoxicant powder and 3 gm heroine. The accused in the case have been identified as Mintu, Angrej Singh, Mandeep Singh, Bakhshish Singh, Pargat Singh, Kashmir Singh and Devinder Singh. The accused in the NDPS act were, the Senior Superintendent of Police told.

Phagwara: The police has arrested two armed robbers, identified as Madan Lal of Una, and Harjot Singh of Kabirpur, and recovered two .32 bore revolvers along with some live cartridges from their possession on Wednesday night.

PHILLAUR: The police has seized Rs 11.37 lakh from two persons, which was unaccounted for, last night. A police team seized Rs 6 lakh from the car belonging to Gulshan Rai of Phillaur during a search operation near the Toll Plaza barrier last night.

	Rebellion in SAD: Tikka to contest as independent GS Paul Tribune News Service Amritsar, December 29 Dejected by the alleged negligence on the part of the SAD leadership for considering him as its contender from Amritsar (south), the district president of the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) Gurpratap Singh Tikka announced to contest elections as an independent from this constituency against SAD's candidate Inderbir Singh Bolaria. Tikka, who is also the chairperson of Punjab Agro, said he was given assurance by the top SAD leadership to forego his claim in lieu of Amritsar (east) constituency. Nevertheless, under the seat-sharing deal with its alliance partner BJP, the Amritsar (East) constituency was given to the BJP. "I have taken this harsh decision of contesting elections as an independent because I have always been given step-motherly treatment by the party. Despite the fact that I was associated with the SAD since 1994, the party had blatantly ignored my contributions. In 2002, they preferred to project a novice Kirpal Singh as their candidate from this constituency. Similarly, in 2007, preference was given to Raminder Singh Bolaria, who had quit the Congress to join the SAD. This time, the party has again chosen Bolaria as its candidate from the south. I was given assurance for East constituency. Now, this ticket has been given to the BJP," he said while declaring that he can also consider to submit his resignation from the post of vice chairmanship of Punjab Agro, if need be. There are five Vidhan Sabha constituencies falling in city limits - Amritsar (South), Amritsar (Central), Amritsar (West), Amritsar (North) and newly formed Amritsar (East). Except for Amritsar (South), all the constituencies are traditionally contested by BJP party candidates, it was only the newly formed East seat, on which some SAD candidate could be projected. Meanwhile, showing solidarity with Tikka, the Senior Deputy Mayor and national secretary of Youth Akali Dal (YAD) Ajai Birpal Singh Randhawa and councilor Kailash Kaur said soon five more councillors would support them. "I will support Tikka at any cost and would not hesitate to put in papers from the posts of senior deputy mayor as well as national secretary of the YAD."

In another incident, an unidentified middle-aged person died due to cold in the Ludhiana-Lohian train on Wednesday. The police has sent the bodies to hospitals in Phagwara, Phillaur and Nakodar for post-mortem.
	Head constable killed in road accident Our Correspondent Shahkot, December 29 A head constable was killed in a head on collision between the car and a truck near Kangna village in Shahkot late last night. The deceased, identified as Rajinder Singh, a resident of Nimajipur village in Shahkot, was posted at the in Phillaur police station. Rashpal Singh, in charge, Malsian police station, said the victim was travelling in a car (PB-02AG-1980) from Malsian to Nakodar. When he reached near Kangna village, his car collided head head-on with a speeding truck (HR-46J-7025) coming from the opposite side. The Impact of the collision was so intense that the victim’s car turned turtle and collided with tree. The highway police reached the spot and managed to pull out the victim who got stuck in the car. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead. The police said the driver of the truck fled from the spot leaving his vehicle behind, which has been impounded. A case under Section 304-A was registered against the truck driver and raids were on the nab him, the police said. Police sources said he was on duty and was on his way to nab a proclaimed offender.

Senior Superintendent of Police Manminder Singh said the Khalra police also seized a distillery in working order near the defense drain besides 450 Kg of ‘lahan’ besides 11,430 ML illicit liquor. Two accused, Harminder Singh and Dalbir Singh who ran the distillery, fled from the spot.

	Jalandhar softball team wins Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 29 The girls team of Jalandhar District Softball has won the 19th State Senior Softball Championship, which was held at Patiala from December 23 to 25. In the final match, Jalandhar girls beat Gurdaspur by 2-0. The winning was accorded a warm welcome by the Jalandhar District Softball Association.
